V S Update for (parents of) juniors - 29 July 2018

- Training at GSAL and added time for field events
- Track and Field at Spenborough (2), York (2) and Wakefield
- "Road" races at Wetherby and Kirkstall
- Fun run at Lineham Farm

Training at GSAL

Firstly to say that we are intending to train at GSAL for most weeks during July and August, definitely 31 July, 7 August and 14 August. I believe John and Pat are available for all these weeks so we'll continue including shot and long jump during the 6pm-7:15pm main session. However I'm happy to stay behind after 7:15pm to support those of you wanting additional practice at shot and long jump, and you can also practice discus (I have 3 weights for various ages) and javelin (I've just bought a 300gm model as I've seen there is an under-11 competition at York; the under-13's would normally throw 400gm so it will be for practice for them too).

Track and Field Meetings

Here's a summary of the remaining local events (that I'm aware of) for 2018.

Note that age groups for all of the following are based on ages at 31 August 2018. All meetings have U-15, U-13, and U-11 categories. Only the meeting on 12 August has an U-9 category.

Note that all juniors in the U-13 category and above (i.e. those 11 or over on 31 August 2018) must be affiliated to England Athletics. This costs £15; it is valid to 31 March 2019, so covers the coming cross country season.

Sunday 5 August - final West Yorks T & F meeting at Cleckheaton, about 16 Striders have entered for the season, if anyone else wants to take part, email me back before 1 August and I'll see if I can get a deal on the price. Sunday 12 August - juniors T & F at Heslington, U-15/13/11/9 age groups, see www.valleystriders.org.uk/up180723.htm . Sunday 9 September - West Yorkshire T & F Championships at Cleckheaton. This competition is only open to those who've already taken part in the W Y T & F league. Entry forms for this are in your WY T&F handbook, you can find it here http://www.westyorkshireathletics.org.uk/WYH2018.pdf . Note that the closing date is 6 August, so if you want to take part, please take a look at this now! This is postal entries, SAEs etc, so I'll leave this to you.

"Road" Races

Several local clubs put on road races during September and October and some of them also hold a junior race alongside.

Two that may interest you are

Wetherby mini-marathon (1.6 miles), Sunday 2 September, start at 12:30pm. Postal entries and entries on the day will be accepted at a cost of £3.50. There is no minimum age for fun runners but under 7's must run with a fee paying adult. Prizes awarded to first 5 runners aged 15 years or under. All finishers are medal winners.

Fun Run at Lineham Farm

There is a fun run at Lineham Farm on Sunday 16 September, 2.5km or 5km, www.racebest.com. This is the charity that we supported from our Junior Races in May and will be supporting from the Meanwood Valley Traril Race in September
