London Marathon 2019 - why you should enter the ballot next week

If you've been inspired by watching the London Marathon and you want to run next year, then unless you've run under 2:45 for men or 3:15 for women you must enter via the ballot which opens next Monday (30 April) and closes 5pm on Friday 4 May.

Website is http://www.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com

Note that the rules for Good-For-Age qualification have changed, the website recommends that you apply for the ballot in case your Good-For-Age qualification is rejected.

Note that Valley Striders will get 2 or 3 club places in the 2019 Marathon - we will only consider people for these places if they have applied via the ballot and been rejected.

Entry fees are £35 for club members affiliated to England Athletics and £39 if not.  To check your affiliation status, please see www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm .  Note that we will not consider non-affiliated (i.e. social) members for the club places because it is the count of affiliated members that determines how many club places we get.

Valley Striders Fell Runners weekend in the Lakes (from Simon Vallance)

Valley Striders AC have booked the Leeds Uni outdoor centre for the Duddon Valley fell race weekend for two nights (Friday 1st June and Saturday 2nd June)

On the Saturday, there is a long race of 18 miles or a short one of 10.

It sleeps 36 maximum in 3 dorms. Self-catering but near to one of the best pubs in the Lakes.

See https://sport.leeds.ac.uk/facilities/outdoors/#tab-id-9  for full details.

Invite open to all VS members - you may want to run the race, just run, spectate or do something else like climb or cycle - the more the merrier. It's a lovely spot, one of the quieter parts of the Lakes, and if it's raining you have a roof over your head.

Cost is approximately £15 per night. We have dedicated one dorm to people with young children.

If you are interested, email me [email protected]  or join the event in the VS fell page.

Bradford Millennium Way Relay - Sunday 24 June (from Myra Jones)

This year's Bradford Millennium Way Relay is taking place on Sunday 24th June. We would like to enter a couple of teams.

For anyone who hasn't done it before, it's 5 undulating legs of between 8 and 11 miles and each leg is run as a pair. It's a lovely, scenic route that doesn't go anywhere near Bradford and instead visits Haworth, Silsden and Ilkley Moor.

If you have any questions or would like to run, please email [email protected]

We would like to sort teams out fairly soon in order to allow plenty of time for recces so please can you let us know by 3rd May.

There are detailed route descriptions available on the website

Grand Prix and Fell Championship

London Marathon - Report from Steph Gledhill

A Guinness world record, Mermaid, lost number, hottest event ever, running, walking and lots of water

The London Marathon was rather eventful this year. With it being tipped to being the hottest on record there were plenty of warnings not to run fast, drink but not too much and enjoy the run.

The start of the weekend occurred when one of our runners left his number on the train. Thankfully after a social media plea he was reunited with it Saturday morning.

We all lined up from different starts on the Sunday morning, some having just warmed up whilst watching Mo Farah. The Queen pressed a button and with determination in our hearts 21 of us set off.

Sue Sunderland had been injured so, on two weeks training, planned to run 11 miles which she ran superbly.

One Strider race walked the last few miles whilst a few of us (including myself) ran/walked due to the overbearing heat. At least one of us achieved a personal best, well done Huw.

The support was amazing, noise all the way round with offerings of oranges, bananas, blueberries, sweets and ice pops which definitely helped me get round.

There was also a little YMCA dance half way round.

We had lots of supporters from our own club who gave plenty of encouragement and joined us after for a post marathon drink or two at a pub where our chief supporter and tour organiser reserved tables to save our legs.

Money was raised for charities including Alzheimer's UK and Mini Mermaids and one of our runners broke the world record for running as a rugby player, well done Terry.

All in all it was a very successful weekend and a good taster of the Marathon tour in October.
