This will be a recce of the Beamsley Beacon fell race route (5.5 miles, 300m of ascent in total).

Meet 09:00 at the corner of main street and Bolton rd in Addingham (LS29 0NS) outside the Crown Inn - you can usually park along that main road or a side street nearby.

For more details, see the item in the previous V S Update www.valleystriders.org.uk/up180119.htm and/or see Facebook event in VSAC Members group and/or email Amanda [email protected]

Training and Food - Tuesday 6 February

All training sessions from Leos

All juniors and beginners/improvers should bring off-road shoes.  Juniors in the "C" group and beginners/improvers are also requested to bring hi-vis and road shoes in case we decide these groups will be on the pavements on the Buckstone Estate.

Food will be available after both sessions. On the menu is pie and peas (best beef mince or veggie bake). To order, please email
- [email protected] (for food at 7:15pm after the 6pm session)
- [email protected]  (for food at 8:30pm after the 7pm session)
before 10pm on Sunday 4th, saying whether you want a full portion (£4) or a half portion (£2), whether you want meat or veggie pie, and whether you want baked beans or mushy peas.

Training Workshop at Leo's - Tuesday 6 Feb 8:30 pm (from Myra Jones)

With spring marathons on the horizon, this would be a good time to share the wealth of knowledge and experience within the club. It will be an informal chat and not restricted to marathon training.  If you have any aspects of training/racing you'd like to cover please feel free to email [email protected]    This will give people a chance to have a think about them in advance.

The workshop will also provide a good opportunity to provide feedback on the revamped Tuesday sessions and share any suggestions for how they can be developed and improved going forward.

Food will be available, see above

Peco at Templenewsam - Sunday 11 February

Details are now available at http://www.pecoxc.co.uk/pages/race5.html

Registration is in the Visitor Centre half way between the House and the Farm.

The start times are Years 1-6 at 10:00am, Years 7-12 at 10:20am, Men at 11:00am and Ladies at 11:10am.  These are the usual Peco start times but there have been a few variations this season.

Only the junior 1 mile is suitable for spikes.

SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR VALLEY STRIDERS

- If you ran one of the first 4 races, hopefully you have kept your race number, otherwise you'll need to pay for a new one at the queries / guests table at registration
- If you were registered for the first 4 races but ran none, your number will be by the club flag or in the gazebo  Junior numbers are sorted by school year, adult numbers by M/F and surname
- If you didn't register but want to run race 5, then:
- - juniors, email [email protected]  before race day and pick up your number on race day from Bob who will be in the registration area (nothing to pay)
- - seniors must register themselves as a guest on race day and pay £3 for the bib and £3 race fee
- All juniors must register (nothing to pay)
- All adults must register and pay £3

All Valley Striders should wear club colours i.e. white* vest/top with black lettering.  Those without an official club vest/top should wear plain white.   (* Or off-white if it's been washed many times)

Yorkshire Vets XC - 4 March (from Steve Webb)

Yorkshire Vets XC Champs is on Sunday 4 March at Spen (same venue as WYXC race 3 this season).

It's a really good event and open to all Over 35s.
- Race 1 is all women plus V70+ men,  5.2k, starts 12.00
- Race 2 is V50+ men, 9.0k, starts 12.30
- Race 3 is V35+ men, 9.0k, starts 13.45

We've had some good results in recent years, particularly in the V50 men.  Last year Tim got bronze and the team won gold.  In 2016 Jerry got bronze and the team won silver, in 2014 the team got silver, and in 2013 Steve won individual silver.  In addition to the normal medals for a team of 3, there is an "all to score" team competition where it pays to flood the field with entries.

It would be good to see a few VS representatives from the other veteran classes, and our lady vets certainly have a good chance of getting among the medals.

To enter, please email [email protected] saying "probable" or "possible".  If/when you decide you definitely want to enter, please pay £6 to the AC Payments account Sort Code: 53-70-00 A/c Number: 72143851 with reference "YVXC" and your name".  Must be paid by 20 February

Hope to see you there.

Steve

Northern Road Relays - 25 March (from Myra Jones and John Hobbs)

The spring road relays (12 stage for men and 6 stage for women) are approaching. Northerns are in Birkenhead on Sunday 25th March and the Nationals are in Birmingham on Saturday 14th April. The men will need to qualify at the Northerns to get to the Nationals but women's teams don't, so the women could just go straight to the nationals. A few of us have competed in these relays before and they are really good events.  The relays are a mixture of 5 mile and 3 mile legs (approx).

Also Young Athletes Road Championships 5k (3 to count per team).
- U15 - Age 13 or 14 at midnight 31st August / 1st September 2017
- U17 - Age 15 or 16 at midnight 31st August / 1st September 2017

Please email [email protected]  if you'd like to run.

We're looking into getting a team bus to travel over so it would be great if people could let us know ASAP.

Leos Raffle (from Steph Gledhill)

As part of the fundraising for Leo's Rugby Club they have a raffle which will be drawn in mid-February.

This will be so they can improve facilities such as the toilets and the back field

Please support the Rugby Club by buying a ticket.

The prizes look really good, the top 3 are a £2000 Virgin Holiday, £500 John Lewis vouchers and a pair of tickets for an England Rugby international match at Twickenham.

If you'd like a ticket and can't get to the club, please make a payment of £10 to the AC Payments account Sort Code: 53-70-00 A/c Number: 72143851 with reference "Raffle" and your name and we'll buy one for you.  Must be paid by 10 February.

More details on Facebook.  Any queries, please email me at [email protected]

Race report - Hebden 22 - 20th January 2018 (from John Hussey)

I only entered this event after some "encouragement" from Amanda Seims who said it would be right up my street. I hate to admit this but, yes she was right!! I was going to do it on my own but ended up running with the lovely Pamela Lomoro who now lives down South but has Valley as a second claim. We had never met before but had a fabulous day out, she was lovely company and I look forward to the chance to run with her in the future. Thank you so much Pamela!!!

The route is definitely a challenging one with plenty of ascent (someone reckoned 4000ft), steep climbs, narrow tracks, open moorland and fabulous scenery. As expected for the time of year it was  also cold (marginally above 0degC) and we had the bonus of snow both on the ground and falling to make things more interesting.

The full route is 22 miles but there is a cut off point part way round for a quick return via the 15 mile route to the start at Mytholmroyd. Pamela had set off with thoughts of just doing the 15 mile route, unfortunately she hesitated deciding at the cut off point and we were off on the full route! We were both going ok and I made the decision we should just go for it full on.

As far as I can make out we came in 134th and 135th out of 192 runners in 6h10min with the awesome Sarah Smith a little ahead of us in 5h 40min.

I also spotted that Meg Galsworthy did the 15 mile route in 3h 59m coming home in 64th place out of 129 - well done Meg.

Just to put things in context the winner Ben Mounsey did the 22 miles in 3h 04m. He is sponsored by Inov-8 and seems to be semi professional. Looking at the runs he has done over the last year he just doesn't do easy ones which is a huge comfort to me as I certainly didn't find it easy.

Whilst there are marshals at the 6 check points the route is not marked at all and I was glad to have been round the route as a walk/run beforehand, we spent little time in checking where we were heading and didn't waste much time.

Did I mention food?? There was loads at each check point especially at the halfway point - loads of cake, sandwiches and jelly babies. Refuelling was fun.

Would I do it again? The conversation with Pamela went from "never again" to "perhaps skip a year" to "when do entries open?" all within the space of 5 minutes. So the answer is "yes"!! Anyone else up for the challenge?

As a finish, thank you Jean for the pass out, checking the route with me and for your support especially when I staggered in back home.
