Northern Cross Country (from Paul Fotherby) (cut-off 9 January)

The Northern Cross country championships are taking place at Harewood House on Saturday 28 January. For VS this is an unusually close venue for an event such as this.

This is a great opportunity to run a major cross country race with a great atmosphere. If you can run a Peco you can run this. It's no tougher, close by and cheap to enter. You'll also be doing your club a great service if you run by promoting Valley Striders to a huge audience from the running community. Yes there are fast ones at the front end but the standard is wide ranging so you'll always find someone to fight it out with. You can also say you've competed in an Area Championship. So this is a plea to step up and show off your club on a bigger stage.

This is at Parliament Hill Fields in London on Saturday 24 February, first race is at 11:00a.m.

Please email [email protected]  by Tuesday 9th January if you would like to run.  The club will pay for your entry provided you actually run on the day. If you withdraw for any reason, you'll be expected to pay £8 to the club (same fee for all age groups).

Age categories and race distances are the same as for the Northerns but there is a different sequence of races.

Tuesday training Sessions

- Tuesday 2 January - all at Leos except fell runners
- Tuesday 9 January - juniors and beginners/improvers at Leos, advanced and intermediates at Beckett Park
- Tuesday 16 January - all at Leos there will be two sittings of food (7:15 and 8:30).

Due to the weather and the ground conditions at Leos, some of the junior sessions over the next few weeks may be cancelled - please check the website each Tuesday.  Also could juniors and beginners/improvers be prepared for road sessions by having hi-vis tops available to wear.

Membership renewals

Happy new year!  144 adult members (competitive, social and 2nd claim) have renewed (thank you). But 160 are still due to pay, so if you are one of these, please make it your new year's resolution to do so soon!   Check www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm for your status and for renewal options and prices.

Meanwood Trail Race 2018 (from Steph Gledhill)

Everyone interested in helping with the Meanwood Trail Race is invited to a meeting on Tuesday 16 January at Leos where we will agree the race date and review all the tasks involved in planning the race e.g. obtaining permits, acquiring first-aid cover, designing and distributing race publicity, budgeting race costs, recceing the route to be able to position marshals on race day, ordering race numbers, purchasing trophies and prize vouchers etc

Note that there will be food on that evening, menu to follow.

If you want to discuss, please reply to the recent FB post or email [email protected]

Peco XC - race 3 important information

Race 3 is at Roundhay Park on 7 January.

Please read http://www.pecoxc.co.uk/pages/race3.html for general race information and maps.

Please check this on Sunday morning before setting off in case of any changes.

SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR VALLEY STRIDERS

- If you ran the first or second race, hopefully you have kept your race number, otherwise you'll need to pay for a new one at the queries / guests table at registration
- If you were registered for the first or second race but ran neither, your number will be by the V S Flag and/or Gazebo on race day (these will be near registration).  Junior numbers are sorted by school year, adult numbers by M/F and surname
- If you didn't register but want to run race 3, then:
   - juniors, email [email protected] before race day and pick up your number on race day from Bob who will be in the registration area (nothing to pay)
   - seniors must register themselves as a guest on race day and pay £3 for the bib and £3 race fee
- All juniors must register (nothing to pay)
- All adults must register and pay £3

All Valley Striders should wear club colours i.e. white* vest/top with black lettering.  Those without an official club vest/top should wear plain white.   (* Or off-white if it's been washed many times)

NOTE THE RACE START TIMES

- Junior race 1 (school year 2 - 6): 10:00am, approx 1.2 miles, 2 big hills, registration opens 8:45
- Junior race 2 (school year 7 - 12): 10.20am, approx 2 miles, 3 big hills, registration opens 8:45
- Seniors Men and Ladies: running together at 11.00am, approx 4.4 miles, registration opens 9:15

Junior routes suitable for spikes (two very short road crossings), senior route not.

NOTE THE SPECIAL INFORMATION ABOUT ROUNDHAY PARK

Please read http://www.pecoxc.co.uk/pages/race3.html as there are a number of important "notices".

2018 Grand Prix and Baildon Boundary Way

The full list of events for the 2018 Grand Prix will be published soon.  In the meantime, remember that all the Peco races are in the 2018 Grand Prix.

Also in the 2018 Grand Prix is the Baildon Boundary Way half marathon on 8 April.  It is quite popular with Striders, averaging 17 of us over the last 5 years.  Please note that this is now over 75% full.

See https://www.baildonrunners.co.uk/baildon-boundary-way for details.

Leeds Race Series

Leeds Race Series 2018 is now open at www.leedsathletics.net. Approximately 23 local races, none more than £16 to enter, includes 7 local parkruns and the series is free to enter.

The website also includes the final tables for 2017. Of the 22 trophies available, Valley Striders won just one in 2017 -  the M65 category - modesty prevents me from saying who won it.

Annual Awards - Correction

In the last edition I reported that John Hobbs had won the Max Jones trophy for best age-graded result.  We have subsequently read the small print www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmaxcup.htm which says "previous winners are ineligible".  Therefore it has been awarded to Liz Ball who achieved 83.5% by running the Abbey Dash in 49:13 at the age of 64.

Many thanks to all the volunteers at the start/finish and marshalling on the route.

Congratulations to Alex Watson-Usher who was first of those across the line with a system-generated handicap and therefore was awarded the cup.
