Peco XC - race day (from Bob)

We have 111 adults and 63 juniors pre-entered - see www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm

Race 1, Sunday 26 November at Nostell Priory, see http://www.pecoxc.co.uk/pages/race1.html

Postcode for Satnav is WF4 1QE.  See above instructions re parking, note that this is £2 but free if you are a National Trust member.

If you are on the pre-entry list
- please pick up your race number from the Valley Striders gazebo, numbers will be in separate packets for male and female and groups of surnames e.g. A-D etc
- NB juniors, if you arrive before the gazebo, pick up your number from by the Valley Striders flag, numbers will be in packets for each school year
- then go to registration, showing your race number
- adults pay the race fee (£3)
- juniors need not pay (but parents must sign in)

If you haven't pre-entered and intend to run
- adults may register as guests, this will cost £3 for a race number plus the race entry fee.  You will not count for club points but will count for subsequent races.
- juniors please contact me [email protected] before Saturday 6pm and I will buy your number, please find me on race morning in the registration area.
- NB juniors who just turn up will need to pay the £2 fee for the race number plus the £1 for race entry.

All Valley Striders should, if possible, wear Valley Striders vests or T-shirts, see www.valleystriders.org.uk/justjoined.htm for where to buy them.  If you aren't able to get a VS top in time for the first race, please wear a plain white top.

If anyone has a spare vest, please bring it!

All, please bring 4 safety pins, and remember to keep your number for the other races in the series.

The race instructions say "not suitable for spikes"; this applies to adults and the junior 2 mile race; the junior 1 mile is suitable for spikes but these definitely aren't essential as their route forms part of the adult route.

Remaining dates/venues are 10 Dec at Golden Acre, 7 Jan at Roundhay, 21 Jan at Middleton Park, 11 Feb at Templenewsam.

Training on 28 November

6pm Juniors/beginners/improvers at Leos as usual

7pm training will take place at High Ashes next week rather than Church Lane as we did Hills this week.  We've not finalised the exact session but it will be a mixed reps session.

Training and Food and Juniors Presentations on 5 December

All sessions meet at Leos, except maybe for fell runners (see VS Fell and Trail FB group).

Food will be available to everyone. On the menu is lasagne. To order, please email
- [email protected] (for food after the 6pm session)
- [email protected] (for food after the 7pm session)
before 10pm on Sunday 3rd, saying whether you want a full portion (£4) or a half portion (£2) and whether you want meat or veggie lasagne.

There will be presentations of 3 new trophies for juniors at 7pm immediately after the juniors session, please could all parents and juniors stop for an extra 5 minutes to see these awards being presented.

Review of Tuesday 7pm sessions (from Myra)

Over the past few weeks we've been trying out a range of different training sessions and are keen to hear what people think of them.  Please let us know what you've enjoyed or haven't enjoyed and whether you've found the sessions sufficiently challenging. The consensus seems to be that we would like to see a greater variety of sessions going forward.  If you have any ideas of sessions you would like us to try or can suggest different locations we can use, please let us know.  We're going to be developing a suite of session plans over the next few weeks and it would be great to have your input.

Please email [email protected]  or have a chat with James Tarran, Simon Vallance or Myra Jones.

V S Buffs (from Bethany Lovell)

Valley Striders AC Buff order

It's getting chilly......maybe time to get a VS buff?

They are £7 each. There is just one design for the athletics club buffs and one size fits all (including kids from about 7 years old) , so nice and easy. All you need to do is:

1) Email your order to [email protected] - include your name and the number of buffs you want to order.

2) Make correct payment to: Sort code: 53 70 00, Account: 72143851, Reference: "Buff" and your name

The deadline is midnight on Thursday 7th December. The lead time is usually 5 weeks from the point we submit the order so I'm afraid they are unlikely to arrive before Christmas.

Just one disclaimer: there is a minimum order of 25, hopefully this won't a problem.

For a picture, see the posts in the VSAC or VSAC Juniors Facebook Groups or the 'kit' page on http://valleystriders.org.uk

VS Hoodies (from Bethany Lovell)

A few people have mentioned they missed the chance to order hoodies. If there are at least 5 additional people we can do a follow up order – but there will be a surcharge of £3.50 per hoodie.

Email [email protected]  by 7th December if interested and they should come before Christmas. Hoodie details are in the 'kit' page on http://valleystriders.org.uk . If there are not enough additional hoodies to make an order then then you'll be first on the list for the next regular order which will probably be in late Spring.

If you have already ordered a hoodie and still need to collect it then email [email protected]  to arrange.

V S Grand Prix 2018 (from Alan Hutchinson)

We have decided to implement a number of changes to the Grand Prix competition in 2018 which we hope will increase the participation in the selected races and increase the age categories to provide more competition in the older age groups.

Male categories: there will now be senior men, Male vet. 35-44, 45-54 and 55+. (One additional group).

Female categories: there will now be senior women, Female vet. 35-44, and 45+. (One additional group).

The differences in male and female categories have taken account of the numbers in each group and falling within each sub-group.

Groups: There are presently 6 groups based on runners pace (groups A-F). The F group is based on running at an average of over 8 minutes per mile and there will now be an additional group G for 9+ minutes per mile runners.

Race categories: to increase by one - There are presently 6 (short, medium and long road), fell and trail, club handicap races, cross country. A parkrun category will be introduced taking in 4 specific parkruns over the four seasons. This reflects the popularity of the parkruns and provides more opportunities to achieve 8 races across 5 categories during the year.

I am starting to review races for 2018 and would welcome thoughts for inclusion, particularly in the new Park Run category. Please email me at [email protected] with your thoughts.

Membership Categories and Rates

The adult £30 competitive membership includes £15 for V S club funds (same as last year) and £15 for E A affiliation (up £1).  Note that the E A year is from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019, we collect now so as not to have to send reminders twice a year. But if you pay the E A component now you can change any time up to 31 March 2018 by notifying us.

To check your current category and status, see www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm

For most adult competitive members, their V S membership expired August 2017 and their England Athletics membership will expire March 2018. When you pay, you will see these updated to August 2018 and March 2019 respectively.

If you are not a competitive member, you'll see a blank for your EA membership details. It is Valley Striders policy that any member running any races during the year should be a competitive member.  This includes all the big local races (Leeds half, Run for All 10k, Abbey Dash), also Peco XC, but does not include parkrun i.e. if you only run parkrun you may be a social member.

These are the other membership options available

- Competitive member, but main sport cycling £20
- Competitive member, life member of V S £15
- Social (non-competitive) member, whether or not training with us £15
- Social (non-competitive) member, but main sport cycling £5
- Social (non-competitive) member, living outside Yorkshire £5
- Volunteer (non-competitive) member, assisting at training sessions and/or events but not training £3
- Second claim member (i.e. a member of another club and paying E A affiliation fee via that other) same rates as social membership above
- Social or volunteer, life member of V S - nil

Junior membership see details in previous V S Update www.valleystriders.org.uk/up171115.htm

For the league tables so far, see http://www.westyorkshireathletics.org.uk/LT2017.htm but these are a little misleading as all individual categories and most team categories are best 3 to count, so some of those who have missed 1 race may well overtake some that have run all three.
