All groups from Leos.

- Advanced and intermediates will leave Leos at 7pm prompt for a mixed reps session at High Ashes similar to the sessions in the last 2 weeks led by David Lowes

Food will be available to everyone. On the menu is "pie and peas". To order, please email
- [email protected] (for food after the early session)
- [email protected] (for food after the later session)
before 10pm on Sunday 1st, saying
- whether you want a full portion (£4) or a half portion (£2)
- and whether you want meat and potato pie or veggie bake
- and whether you want mushy peas or baked beans.

NB if you don't make any choices, you will get a full portion of meat pie and mushy peas.

NB if you need to cancel, you will need to pay unless we can reallocate your food to a latecomer.

During the first sitting Richard and Bob will asking parents to join in a brief discussion (10 minutes) of key issues affecting juniors, e.g. membership fees, race entries, what food to put on the menu etc.

October training (and food)

The plan for the rest of October is as follows:
- 10 October - juniors at GSAL for VS Sports Day Part 2; please arrive 6pm prompt otherwise we will not have enough light to complete the events
- 10 October - intermediates & advanced at Beckett Park; their floodlights are currently out of action, please check the VS website nearer the date to check that the session is on
- 17 October - all groups at Leos (5x6 session for advanced and intermediates); food for 6pm groups  and possibly for 7pm groups too
- 24 October - all groups at Leos (hill session for advanced and intermediates)
- 31 October - all groups at Leos, advanced/intermediates will be final coached session, food for all

Medals for attending junior training sessions

This Tuesday, we presented medals for attending 25 sessions to Leon Jones, Michael Fotherby and Sophia Lubiecki, and for attending 50 sessions to Jessica Baxter and Laurie O'Brien.

Just a reminder that on a Tuesday evening all juniors should tick the box by their name on the registration sheet otherwise they won't accumulate towards the medals.  Also we are about to make some awards to juniors that review attendance at training sessions so those not ticking the registration sheets won't be considered for these awards.

Registration for parkrun

Please could all V S members (particularly juniors) make sure they are registered on parkrun as "Valley Striders A C".  Unless you do this, we cannot collect your results.

We are about to make some awards to juniors that review race participation including parkrun so those not registered won't be considered for these awards.

Kit (Hoodies and Buffs)

There will be an email about ordering kit (hoodies and buffs) in the next few days.  It will come from the vsupdate account because hopefully these don't go into your spam folder, but the email address for reply will be [email protected] .

Discount on Abbey Dash

There is an offer of 15% discount only available on 1 October to celebrate "Grandparents Day" (no, I'd not heard of it either).  Register at: www.ageuk.org.uk/dash ; all you need to do is enter GRANDPARENT in the discount code field when registering to get 15% off your ticket price.

Leeds Race Series

The entry deadline for Leeds Race Series 2017 will be extended to 31 October.  The Series consists of a lot of local races (the ones organised by local athletics clubs) and a number of parkruns, so most Striders are likely to have already run several races in the Series.  There are 3 dates in December to catch up with some parkruns so many Striders still have the opportunity to get to 8 races to qualify for prizes, but even if you can't or don't you can still compare with other runners in your age group and be ready for the 2018 Series - first race will be the Templenewsam 10 on 14 January (selling fast).

For details, follow the link from www.leedsathletics.net

The Leeds Junior Race Series 2017/8 is also open; follow the same link.

Valley Striders Xmas Party

Friday 15 December, save the date!

RACE RESULTS

We advertise that Valley Striders compete at all distances and I was thinking that the two sets of results below illustrate the two extremes.  But then I remembered that our under-11's run 75 metres on the track and two of our members have taken part in much longer events - the Windermere 10 marathons in 10 days and the Marathon des Sables (156 miles in 6 days across the Sahara desert)!

Brecon 10 Peaks (from Steve Dixon)

9 September, self navigating course over the 10 highest peaks in the Brecon Beacons, approximately 57 miles and close to 5000 metres of ascent (dependent upon route choice).

It was wet, windy, cold, boggy with unrelenting steep climbs and descents.

Joint First: Matt Tomlinson and Robin Carter 11.33.23
First Lady: Katie Hatley 16.45.51
Myself: 39th 19.31.57 (1st Vet60)
68 finished within 24hour cut off
20 others either retired, were timed out or switched over to the 'short' course.

I won't be rushing back to do this one again.  This is the link to the 3D route if anyone's tempted for 2018 https://www.relive.cc/view/1176715443
