Thursday Away Day 13 July (from Richard Irvine)
The VS Thursday Run will be heading out on its
third away day of the summer. This time taking in the route
of the Round Hill Fell Race (for further details of the course see http://otleyac.org.uk/round-hill-fell-race
). Amanda and Simon will be leading this, meeting at Timble
for a 7 p.m. start. As this is sandwiched between 2 relay events (Golden Acre
& Washburn) we anticipate a fairly easy pace that is manageable by anyone
able to run 6 - 7 miles at 9 min/mile pace. We hope to have food and a couple
of drinks afterwards (location being determined). Newcomers welcome! Further
details can be found on the VS Facebook page.
Summer Handicap and Junior 1 mile races - Tuesday 18 July
All races are free to
enter and all races are open to club members and non-members including friends
of existing members and juniors on the waiting list. We would like to be notified about
non-members in advance, please email [email protected]
for the junior race or [email protected]
for the club handicap.
Meeting place for race start and postcode for
parking are on the front page of the website www.valleystriders.org.uk. Note that it is a 3 minute
jog / 6 minute walk from Alwoodley Lane to the start.
On the night, we will be asking parents of
juniors to marshal along the half mile length of the junior route as
(especially if it is a nice evening) there are likely to be walkers, dogs and
bicycles on the route.
We will need about 7 marshals
for the 5 mile trail race, if you can help please email Sue Sunderland [email protected] . The race can't take
place without these marshals.
Juniors waiting list
Our junior group has a waiting list of over
50 juniors and we have spaces for 10 of these for the period 11 July to 26
September. If you were on the waiting
list you should have received an email just over a week ago. If you didn't get it, please check your junk
email. For further information please contact [email protected]. Note that the junior 1 mile races on 18 July
are open to all juniors on the waiting list whether or not invited for the 10
places.

Just one report this VS Update, a very long one, so here are the
first two paragraphs and click on the link at the bottom to continue.
Isle of Jura (from Sarah Smith)
For four years now, I have been trying to rearrange my life in
order to make it to the start line of the Isle of Jura Fell Race, ever since I
had to forego my place in 2013. I had not run much in the months prior to
the race, and I knew I was doomed to being timed out. Instead of setting
off with the runners, I had marshalled at check point 7, Corra
Bheinn, which role in fairness I had felt quite proud
to fulfil. Being on the Isle of Jura, being part of this incredible event,
handing a cup of water to the runners, all felt like a privilege.
Three days before the race in 2013, I had reccied
the section of the race that took in the three Paps
of Jura with Steve, Andreas and Amanda, my fellow club members who were running
in the race. I had never been in such an exposed place in my life, and
could not believe where I found myself, this was the
stuff of dreams. The weather that week was extreme. Tropical
temperatures, clear skies, no clouds for multiple horizons. The
views from the peaks of the Paps were breathtaking; the colours of the sky and the sea were the
richest, deepest, brightest throbbing turquoise and whatever other hue you can
pin on blue that exist in the palette. This riot of nature, the mountains
and the sea, was verging on painful it was so beautiful.
And if you want to find out how Sarah got on
when she went back to Jura in May this year, then read her blog and see the
pictures here
