Advanced
Summer Training Starts Tuesday!! (message from Steph
Gledhill)
The summer training for the advanced group
starts on Tuesday. This will be at Eccup reservoir.
This week is the 3x10 session.
The group will leave Far Moss at 7pm prompt
and the session will start at 7:10. This is real time not Valley
Striders time. Otherwise we will be running in the dark.
If you are running straight there please get
there for 7:10 at the latest. If you turn up later then run along the reservoir
until you see the group heading back and turn (same route as Handicap and Eccup
10).
Email [email protected] if you need more info on the starting point.
Valley
Ladies social meal out (message from Amanda Seims)
Just out of pure selfishness and because I
don't get to spend much time with the ladies of the club (due to my dislike of
road training) I thought it would be nice to have a low key social event, just
with the ladies (sorry boys.....).
We also have some lovely ladies spread out
across the various training groups and this would be a good way to get us
together.
The plan is to go out on Sun 9th April at 6pm
at the Olive Branch Alwoodley. All VS ladies welcome.
There is apparently a special £15 for two
courses deal on a Sunday.
Please sign up via the Facebook event or
email [email protected] before midnight 2nd April.
Bradford
Millennium Way (message from Myra Jones)
Thanks to all those who have
already signed up. We have 16 names so far and 11 of those are ladies, so
it's looking very promising for us entering a strong Ladies team this year.
Please check your diaries and sign up if you are available. It is a great
event and we are very close to getting enough for 2 teams
Just
to remind you, the date is 25th June. The relay
is made up of 5 legs of between 8 and 11 miles and each leg is run as a
pair. It's a lovely trail route that doesn't actually go near Bradford, instead you'll take in the delights of Bingley,
Haworth, Laycock (near Keighley), Silsden
and Ilkley. If you would like to run and/or if you have any
questions please email [email protected].
Valley
Striders on Tour
Hi it's Kathy Robbins, Ian Sanderson's
partner, with exciting news about the VS Autumn Tour 2017.
The 2016 Palma tour group have decided on the
Toulouse Marathon, HM, 10K and relay on Sunday 22 October 2017.
It's the start of half term so you might want
to make a holiday of it. There are new tour members every year and supporters
are very welcome!
The obvious flights are from Manchester with
Flybe. I'd expect many of us would travel together, probably Sat am til Tuesday am, but that's up for discussion. There will be
a main hotel and the opportunity to share rooms.
If you have not already expressed an
interest, please comment on the post on the VS AC Facebook page or e-mail [email protected]
(note a in
middle of katharine) and you can then be added to the
tour facebook group and e-mail list. What have you
got Toulouse?
RESULTS
and RACE REPORTS
Congratulations to John Hobbs, Yorkshire
Champion and Rav Panesar, Yorkshire bronze medallist, in the 20 mile
championships run in conjunction with the Spen 20. David Herdsman was 7th and
together they won the team prize. Full
results in Graham Jones's results, see below.
Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships (report from
Steve Webb)
The VS M50 team collected team silver medals
at the last two Yorkshire Vets XC champs, beaten by Sheffield on both
occasions. This time we travelled to the
venue at Doncaster Racing College with a strong team comprising hard man of the
fells Simon Vallance, injury-ravaged Steve Webb, the seriously in-form Tim Straughan, the Professor Emeritus of cross- country Jerry
Watson, and first year M50 spring chicken James Tarran.
The weather was spring-like and the course
was 10k over 3 laps with the going generally firm to good. Fortunately we were not required to tackle
the sandy training gallop or the brushwood steeplechase fences.
A great team
performance with Tim leading the way at 4th overall, good enough for individual
Bronze in the M50s. James was close
behind in 6th and Steve closed the team in 18th just seconds ahead of Jerry and
Simon.
And so it is that VS are Yorkshire gold
medallists this year!
Given our display of formation running with 5
in the top 21 we expected to also win the "All to score" competition
as well. Unfortunately Knavesmire and Pudsey Pacers had 7 finishers which trumped
our 5 even though we had a much better average score. Action point: take more runners next
time! It's a really nice event, open to
all M/W35+. Sara was our only female representative, running the 5k ladies
race.

Heptonstall Race (report from
Simon Vallance)
On a day of atrocious weather incliuding high winds and heavy rain, it was a surprise
that the field for the Heptonstall felk race was the kargest it had
ever been. Huddling in the rain, we
listened to the vicar give his customary blessing before heading up the hill.
As ever, it was a speedy start as people
jostled to avoid being held up once the path narrowed through the woods. Once up onto the moorland section, to no-ones surprise, the path was boggy and slow going. Not a day
for course records. Most runners opted
to weat a waterproof throughout, so it was hard to
know who was ahead and behind you, although I was aware of Mick Loftus
breathing down my neck from the off.
When the wind was at your back, it was great and for some of the hills,
it provided a welcome boost. However,
running into the gales soon had us slowing down and tucking in behind each
other like some kind of dishevelled peloton.
I was going well, and had managed to drop
Mick on a long descent, when, making the mistake of appreciating my
surroundings, I pitched headlong and fell heavily onto my knees, wrist and then
chest. Somewhat dazed, I walked the next
10 minutes or so, thinking I would need to pull out. As I did so, Mick checked on my welfare,
before heading off. Somewhere in the
pack of following runners, Ronan Loftus must have concealed himself, as in the
following five miles or so he managed to overhaul his dad, beating him for the
first time. I hobbled in 6 minutes
later, disappointed not to have done better, but pleased that my injuries had
not been as serious as I first feared.
Rob Bumstead was the next strider home, although by this time we had all
disappeared. Definitely
not a day for hanging round and making small talk.

Mick 2:28.49

Hardmoors 55 (report from Steve Dixon)
Helmsley to Guisborough
- Saturday 18 March
This was my third running of this race but my
first in the northerly direction along the Cleveland Way. It's fairly unique in
that from year to year the start and finish alternate. The start this year was
from Helmsley a quintessential market town on the southern edge of the North
Yorkshire Moors. It's a pleasant start, running through woodland and farmland
westwards towards Sutton Bank and a loop south and down to the White Horse Car
Park CP. This allows us slower runners to see the faster runners regaining the
escarpment and heading back north to Osmotherly.
Donnie Campbell was spotted, as I started this loop, sprinting at the front of
the field on his way to breaking the course record.
From Sutton Bank the route clings to the
escarpment edge of the Hambleton Hills before it plunges down to Osmotherly and the first major food stop and checkpoint.
I'd surprised myself as to how well I was running at this point and was just
outside the top hundred! 22 miles or so ticked off in 3hrs 50mins and I was
hopefully on target to finish close to my previous 11hrs 30 or so. I was still
eating too and not a thought of a gel. Maybe eating too well as I pigged out on
egg sarnies, sausage rolls and quiche, washed down by milky tea. I virtually
waddled out of Osmotherly and very soon bumped into
Amanda Seims, Ian Sanderson (both enjoying a run through the field to support a
few of us runners) and Amanda's lemon drizzle cake. It was lovely to stop and
chat but I rudely had to dash off (grabbing first some cake of course) when one
of my competitors for the Vet 60 cup sneaked past. I was in 'hot pursuit'!
It was nip and tuck up then between us over
Carlton Bank and across the Three Sisters 'Switchback' and I was absolutely
destroyed by the time I reached the checkpoint at the bottom of Clay Bank with
the prospect of another huge climb and the long traverse out to Blowarth Crossing, and the even longer traverse back to the
Kildale Checkpoint. It was here that I accepted I was
not going to win my 5th Vet60 cup out of 5 Hardmoors events I've ran. I gave up
on the chase and took solace in the lonely tramp across the moors tucking into
Amanda's Scrumptious Cake! I was 90 mins outside my schedule when I reached Kildale and it was time to switch on the head torch as
night fell. It would have to wait though as there was pizza, more quiche, pies,
hot chocolate and rice pudding to be consumed. It was a shock to leave the
comfort of the village hall at Kildale into the
darkness as it had started to rain and it was an eerie climb up in the mist to
Captain Cook's Monument. I was feeling sorry for myself but soon felt a tad
guilty for that indulgence when I reached the two marshals taking down numbers,
sitting huddled on picnic chairs, exposed to the worst of the pouring rain by
the side of the monument! It then became surreal when minutes later I was dropping down into
'Disco Partyland'
Checkpoint at the remote parking area Gribdale
Terrace hosted by honorary Striders Izabela and Jason Underwood. Sensibly, but
regretfully, I said no to the offer of beer and strode off into the darkness
away from the fast fading dance music towards the last significant climb -
Roseberry Topping!!! It was a magnificent sight to see dozens of head torches
illuminating the path up and down this iconic volcanic looking peak. At this
point the capacity to run had deserted me completely and I just immersed myself
into the magic stillness of the night broken only by the hoot of distant owls.
I nervously navigated myself through the confusing maze of forest tracks and
paths to the eastern end of Guisborough Woods and
left the Cleveland Way to drop down to the disused railway line that lead me to
the finish in Guisborough. Wow!!! Swallowed up by a
third of the field in the last half of the race but no regrets (apart from
being well over 2 hours late for my waiting wife Jenny) and loved it to bits!
Highly recommend this series of Hardmoors
trail marathons (half, full and 10k's) and ultras. I can't comment though on
the new event for 2017 the '200' combining both the Wolds Way and the Cleveland
Way!!!
1st Donnie Campbell 7hrs 31mins 19 secs
12th (1st Female) Kimberley Cavill 9hrs
00mins 38secs
224th Steve
Dixon 13hrs 40mins 59secs
329 finished out of 369 starters (5 timed out and 35 retired) 55 (Helmsley to Guisborough)
My apologies if I have failed to mention other
Striders that may have been running.
