We're
unsure how much of the pitch we have to train on, on 6th Dec, so we've decided
to scrap a training session and go straight for the party!!

party will start at 6.30pm and will finish around 8.
Tony
has kindly offered to put on his infamous pie and peas for any parents who'd
like to eat.

confirm food orders for the party, please email [email protected]
- for kids just confirm name of child for party food. Cost is 7.50 per
child for party (includes party food, dessert and small contribution to games
and prizes).
Adults,
if you'd like pie and peas please confirm meat or veg pie and if you'd like
mushy peas or beans. Cost is 3.50

There were few notifications of Any Other
Marathon and Any Other Half, including this report from Conwy:
Conwy Half Marathon from Chris Sawyer
Hi Bob - as discussed at the PECO Sunday I
ran the Conwy Half marathon on Sunday 13 November.
My times were gun 1:48:41 chip 1:46:52 - chip
position 620. I expected to be the only Strider present but looking through the
results I noticed Tracey Morris had also run although I did not see her even
though from the times she must have passed me. Her times were gun 1:35:11 -
chip 1:32:19 position 137.
It is a scenic route which starts and
finishes at Conwy Castle and takes you to Llandudno with a return journey up
round and down the Great Orme - a 2 mile climb from mile 5 to 7 but then 2
miles back down again. Weather conditions were cold and sunny - probably better
than anywhere else in England and Wales on that particular day.
Chris's was not his fastest half of the year,
but I added Tracey's time to the AOH table, and this placed her as the 3rd
fastest Strider lady half marathoner in 2016, just behind Myra's 1:30 at Vale
of York and Sam's 1:31 at Brass Monkey.
Bridlington Half Marathon from Chris Sawyer
(Apologies from Bob, just found in inbox)
Palma was not the only sun blessed holiday
destination visited by Valley Striders on Sunday 16 October. Two Striders
travelled across the Yorkshire Wolds for the Bridlington Half. They did not
find Bridlington at its finest. Having travelled over in mist and fog there was
a brief glimpse of blue sky at 9.15 am but the clouds had rolled in well before
the 10 am start accompanied by a cold wind blowing in off the North Sea. The
race headquarters was in the new leisure centre so there was somewhere to
shelter pre and post-race. Thankfully the rain held off until just after the
start but once it started it was set in for the rest of the morning. The race
starts and finishes on the sea front and takes you on an undulating route to
the north of Bridlington. The race was well marshalled but roads were not
closed to traffic so some of the run was spent on the pavement. Crowd support
was inevitably impacted by the weather. The final mile saw you run along
the coast back to Bridlington from Sewerby Hall. On a
better day I think this would have been very pleasant - as it was it was head
down weather as you battled against the wind and the rain. All in all an enjoyable run
- and cheaper than most - only £15.50.
Results - 164 Mike Robins 1:44:19, 168 Chris
Sawyer 1:45:23, 523 finishers
Tour of Pendle, 19
November 2016 - from Sarah Smith
Distance: 27km
/ 16.8m; Climb: 1473m / 4833ft; Venue: Barley Village Hall
This was my sixth Tour of Pendle and even though I
should know the way by now, I am worried. It is easy to take a wrong turn
and end up in the wrong place, as Geoff Webster can confirm; he has an amusing
tale to tell about the time he ended up in a group of racers who found themselves racing towards the front runners a few hours into
the race.
The race route criss
crosses, ascends, descends and winds its way around Pendle Hill and it is
for you to decide if the route is contrived or inspired, so
the Harvey Map says.
Pendle Hill was six inches higher
than usual, due to snow, which made the hard climbs harder and the
descents interesting. A mix of trusting in the studs to keep
you close to the hill as you ran down the snow clad slopes, whilst in
places it was easier to sit down and slide, keeping an eye out for pesky
rocks sticking out of the snow.
The first climb of Pendle Hill
involved speed walking through snow, to be greeted at the top by
clag, sleet and wind which were whipping up as you would expect. Over the
stile and the boggy track path led to Check Point 1, from there I followed the
right path across to Check Point 2 near the Nick
of Pendle. Visibility was good when lower, and the surrounding moors
were bathed in sunlight, a beautiful day. Across by Churn
Clough reservoir, past Check Point 3 and a climb up Bank Hill to the
top of Spence Moor followed by a steep descent of the hill known locally
as "Geronimo" which is usually
dizzying and today more so. Descending was made difficult by
shifting snow, and a few people slid faster than others picked their way.
As usual my friend Ian greets me as I labour up to Spence Moor and this
year he handed me a potato I had baked the evening before for some mid race
nutrition.
Through Check Point 4 [always
pleased I am not timed out], and along Ogden Clough, up Apronfull Hill and down to Check Point 5, again low, good
visibility and fair. There is a climb from here which takes
you to Check Point 6, who is a man standing alone in the mist, then
you head down to Check Point 7. From where there is another climb up
to Check Point 8 and by now there is a total white out and the track has
disappeared. I run in the direction which I think is right. I
approach the edge of the hill, and look down to see about 20 runners picking
their way down beneath me, in fairly bright and clear conditions.
I sped down the hill trusting in
my new best friends my Innov8 X-talons and thanked the super marshall at Check Point 9 who always has a spread of Jaffa
cakes and digestive biscuits; from there it's the long haul up Big End to the
top, which can be traumatic at this stage in the race but today was done
without any risk of breakdown.
Approaching the top the calm is
replaced by snow, flung into your face by the wind, Ian popped up again and
said hello, and disappeared. I threw myself up to the Check Point
and over the top and from there its a steady run
across the top, a great descent down bouncy moors, to Check Point 11 which is
just a few feet away from Check Point 4. The marshalls
here say "the important thing now is to get yourself back" as I thank
them. The marshalls are the heroes of the day,
who stood in the cold, some in blizzards, for hours so a few hundred of us
can race around Pendle Hill.
From this final check point it is
a simple single track which leads to a road, which takes you down to the
Village Hall, the snow flakes are thicker, there is
no one to be seen, I could be anywhere but I am pleased to be here,
to have made it this far. What a magical ending to a special
day.
Ross was on fine form and came twelfth, and Dave,
Simon and Steve were not far behind him. Steve was the 3rd M60 and whilst
I brought up the rear of the Valley Striders, I found out later in the week I
was the 2nd F50 when I received a voucher in the post. Two prizes in two months [3rd F50 in the Poznan marathon] crowned
by the Tour of Pendle t-shirt to be worn with pride.
