on the waiting list.

Food on 4 October
First Tuesday of the month, so food is on,
choose meat or veggie lasagne, order by 10pm Sunday 2 October.
First sitting for
food at 7:15pm, email [email protected]
with your order.
Second sitting for
food at 8:30pm, email [email protected]
with your order.
Pay on the night £3.50 (money is due if you
order but don't turn up and we can't reallocate your meal) (latest time for
cancellation is 10pm Sunday 2 October).
VSAC meeting on 4 October
The third in our series of meetings will be
8:30pm on Tuesday 4 October. All members
welcome, whether or not they have been to previous meetings.
The meeting is to discuss dividing the "activities"
of Valley Striders into around 10 areas
- Treasury/Accounts
- Recruitment
- Coaching/Training
- Internal Competition
- External Competition
- Social
- Events (races)
- Communications
- Fell Running (or included in above)
- Juniors
... and having about
5 people to "look after" each area ...
... which would mean
that each person who volunteered would be looking after 2% (on average) of the
activities of the club.
If you are interested in being involved in one
(or more) of these areas then come along to the meeting and/or email [email protected]
Note that this doesn't mean that you would be
on the committee, but ideally one person from each area would attend committee
meetings (and would not need to be the same person every time).
For more information see www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsconst.htm
Harewood Trail Race and Junior Race
NB at the September meeting we agreed that "our"
Harewood races would not take place in 2016, but hopefully would return in
2017. Please pass this message on if
anyone asks.

Membership fees for the V S year 1 September

York Marathon 2017
Forwarding an email I've been sent from Danni
Carr at Run for All
The Yorkshire Marathon has quickly
established itself as one of the highlights of the White Rose County's sporting
year and remains one of the UK's most popular marathons, with places selling
out in four consecutive years. This popular and picturesque run, with a
fantastic PB potential, takes participants past some of York's splendid
historic sites and along scenic country lanes, making it an attractive prospect
for runners of all abilities.
Demand in 2017 is set to be equally high - so
we are prompting would-be marathon runners to join our pre-sale list now for 24
hours' exclusive access when entries open at 9am on Monday 10th October - this
is new for 2017, where we will be opening entries for the marathon this October
(instead of January as previous years).
Places will be allocated on a strictly first-come,
first-served basis, so registering for the pre-sale is your best shot at a
place in this hugely-popular event.
As we are opening entries earlier in 2017 we
are busy trying to get the message across and promote to all local running
clubs. With this, would it be possible to post something on your social media
platforms or to include this in an email that goes out to your club members.
More information can be found on our website http://theyorkshiremarathon.com/events/plusnet-yorkshire-marathon-pre-sale-2017/
Or the direct
link for entering is: https://y10mile2016wl.eventdesq.com/
Volunteering
Forwarding an email I've been sent from
"Ashleigh" at Women's Running.
We at Women's Running hope you and those at
your club are well, up and running.
I'm getting in touch with you as we are
looking for local, fun, friendly and supportive volunteers (and who better than
runners!) to join the Women's Running 10K race event team on Sunday 2nd
October, in Temple Newsam Park as race Marshals, and
hoping you could help us spread the word with your club/local community.
Every race is reliant on volunteers and
marshals to make sure it runs seamlessly and are looking for volunteers to help with course signage,
marshal points, finish-line responsibilities - and of course to join in the fun
and cheer on the runners. We know that
our marshals aren't just volunteers, but members of the team and Women's Running community- even if you aren't a women! That's why we're offering all our marshals a
rewards bundle worth more than £50!
Any women volunteering on race day will get a
bespoke Women's Running hoodie plus a WR10K goodie bag (complete with race tee
and a free Women's Running magazine).
And, for the guys volunteering, it's a free
pair of Balega socks (RRP £12), a
goodie bag and free copy of Men's Running!
So if you, or
someone you know, would like to get involved, please get in touch with me at [email protected]

Thanks to Steph Gledhill for ensuring that
everyone knew their handicap start times, to the finish team - Eileen &
Mike Crosfill, Jean Hussey, Pat Umpleby and Sarah Diamond - and to the marshals
on route - Amanda Seims, Anne Jones, David Howe, Gemma Merritt, John Umpleby,
Steve Dixon and Tim Towler. (Apologies
to anyone I've missed)
Some questions have been asked about the
handicapping system - here's the recipe
1. Take
each person's 10 most recent performances over measured distances
2. Convert
these to 5 mile times (there are some accepted factors which are also used in
age grading, see the VS website)
3. Take
the best of these
4. Multiply
by 1.01 (this has the effect of giving a very slight advantage to the slower
runners, it has always been a principle of the handicaps to do this)
5. Multiply
by 0.95 for most recent winner, 0.96 for previous winner etc
6. Subtract
this calculated time from the "par" time, which, on Tuesday evening,
was 50 minutes.
7. Round each time to the nearest 15 seconds
to give the start time.
8. Add 2 minutes for anyone who complains (this was Ian Sanderson's suggestion
on Facebook)
A demo can be arranged on a Tuesday evening
for those interested, may be of particular interest to anyone who volunteers to
be part of the "Internal Competition" team.
Yorkshire Vets Cross Country (from Steve Webb)
First XC of the season was the Yorkshire Vets
Championships at Nunroyd Park on a glorious Saturday
morning. Our only VS lady representative
was Maureen Coffey who was 4th W60 in the 5k race.
We had 5 entrants in the M50-59 team category
running an advertised 10k (the times suggest the course was much
shorter!). Jerry Watson had an excellent
battle with his M55 rivals and came in 5th overall to secure M55 Bronze in
33.29. Tim Straughan
10th in 34.18 and an unwell Steve Webb 14th in 34.55
completed the scoring team. This was
good enough for the Silver team medal, just pipped by Sheffield Running Club
but comfortably ahead of Knavesmire. We got silver the last time this event was
held, so are encouragingly consistent.
In addition to the main team competition
there was an "All To Score" competition; in
this we could include the valuable contributions of our other runners Mark
Woodhead 39th in 39.01 and Leroy Sutton 42nd in 39.27. We were 3rd in that competition which was won
by Steel City Striders; unfortunately medals for the winners only, but thanks
to Mark and Leroy for bolstering the team and running well.
