Juniors Training on 29th March - bad news

Leos have been in contact to say what areas of the pitches are available for us to train on.  I walked round the grounds on Saturday.  Unfortunately they aren't able to let us have enough space on areas that I consider safe for our full set of junior sessions plus the beginners/improvers group.

So we will have another week of juniors, with beginners/improvers, on the roads on the Buckstone Estate.

And again, for juniors, we are applying the rule of a minimum of 5 competitive events (parkruns, junior parkruns, Meanwood Trail and Harewood Trail).

We welcome senior runners to come and support these sessions, you'll need to be sub-20 for 5k to support the "A" group, but any speed to support "B1" and "B2".

As discussed at the Meeting of Parents last Tuesday, the sessions will start 6pm prompt (not 6pm Valley Striders time) to allow senior runners supporting the groups to attend their own session at 7pm.

Please note hi-vis is still required!

Other sessions on 29th March

Intermediates at 7pm, Experienced runners at 7pm. Hi-vis still required.

Vets Race on Tusday 21st June - Marshals Required

We still have only just over half of the marshals needed to support this race.  We need 4 people to come at 6pm and the rest at 6:45pm, not much to ask.  I want to be confident that we have sufficient marshals, without chasing at the last minute, before I commit to putting on this event.

Note that food is provided for marshals and generally a good time is had by all!  Most marshals will have finished by 8:30pm.

If you are likely to be available to help on 21 June please email [email protected] - NB we realise this is a long way in advance to commit, and so will understand if a few have to give back word nearer the date.  Check names at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmarshals.htm

Meanwood Valley Trail Junior Races

As you are aware, we cancelled the Meanwood Trail Races due to insufficient time to properly plan the event.  Just to let you know we are considering putting on just the junior races on a Tuesday evening in May.  I'll put something on Facebook to get some feedback.

Club AGM and Meeting of Parents

The new committee proposed in John Wallace's email http://valleystriders.org.uk/AGM-22-Mar-2016-Announcement.htm was voted in unanimously.

Notes from the Meeting of Parents will be posted on the website soon.

West Yorkshire Track and Field League

Valley Striders have entered this league.  The first event is on Sunday 17 April and then there are 6 more dates through the summer.  For further information, click on "Team Competition" in the top bar of the website.  Note that entries need to be in by 4 April.

Note that juniors are encouraged to take part in field events as well as track, and hopefully we'll do a bit of long jump training at GSAL in April.  Also note that under-11's (see definition on website) don't need EA affiliation.

Any queries to [email protected].

Calderdale Way Relay and Bradford Millennium Way Relay

CWR is on Sunday 15 May and I think teams are now organised but more reserves would be welcome.

BMW is on Sunday 28 June.  The selling point of BMW is that it goes nowhere near Bradford, instead you'll see Bingley, Haworth, Laycock (near Keighley), Silsden and Ilkley.  http://saltairestriders.org.uk/site/bradford-millennium-way-relay/

For more information, click on "Team Competition" in the top bar of the website. If you want to run and/or if you have any questions please email [email protected].

Farewell parkrun on 2nd April - from John and Sarah

As you know we're moving north of the wall next month. Apparently my accent has already started to reset back from spending weekdays there. Sarah is working on hers but she still sounds like Groundskeeper Willie.

We still plan to visit Leeds, the city and the club have been a great part of our lives. We'll be down in June for WTS Leeds and again in September for Hannah & Andy's wedding + the LCW.

You'll be pleased to hear we'll be carrying on our membership, no need for second claims or anything because the club we're joining in Scotland is a Tri club.......erm sorry VSTC!

We'd like to say goodbye in the best way possible, Roundhay Parkrun followed by a coffee. It would be great for everyone to join us, although I realise this clashes with the relays so we might not see you all.

Leeds Race Series - Crossflatts parkrun

Note that the next event in the Leeds Race Series is Crossflatts parkrun any Saturday from 2 to 30 April.  This is also in Leeds Junior Race Series for school years 7 to 12.  For school years 1 to 6 the event will be Templenewsam junior parkrun. For details of the Leeds Race Series, go to www.leedsathletics.net and follow the links from there.  The Series is free to enter!

Haworth Hobble & Hardmoors 55 from Ian Sanderson

Not sure if how this 'Any Other Ultra' category will work in the VSGP (or even if it was just a joke) but here are my first couple of results.

Haworth Hobble – 12/03/16

32 miles, 4400 ft
1.
Ian Symington & Ken Sutor  04:16:01
125. Simon Redshaw (& Martyn Hewitt) 06:10:31
173.
Richard Adcock 06:32:30
174. Ian Sanderson 06:33:30
310 finished (either individually or as a pair, so more than 310 finished actually....)

Hardmoors 55 – 22/03/16

55 miles, 8300 ft (?)
1   Steven Lord   08:00:55
142 Ian Sanderson  12:18:50
286 finished, which means I scraped into the top half of the results in an ultra for once.

Not sure who is doing what after this. Ones I know of are that myself and Amanda Seims are down to do the Calderdale Hike on 9th April, Sarah Smith and Meg Goldsworthy are doing the Fellsman on 16th April, and Richard Adcock is jetting off for his winter-sun beach holiday sometime in early April.
