Goosanders

Did you know that Eccup Reservoir was a Site of Special Scientific Interest?  (and has been since 1987).  Did you know that it has one of the largest colonies of goosanders?  Did you know that goosanders breed from October till February?   Neither did I till I applied for permission to Yorkshire Water for the Harewood 10 race route to go round Eccup Reservoir.

We now have some modified routes

5 mile   http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/885038643

10 mile http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/885075649

2 mile http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/884520563

We still need lots of marshals.

If you’d like to help on the day, please email help@valleystriders.org.uk or “join” the Facebook event https://www.facebook.com/events/451741091665235/ .  List of marshals will be at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmarshals.htm (but may be a few days behind)

VS adults if you want to run, please let us know at help@valleystriders.org.uk – we need to ensure we have sufficient marshals before we can “allow” our members to run.

VS juniors please enter now!  VS parents, please volunteer to marshal the “main” race, we will put you in the first mile, you’ll be able to see your child run the 2 mile and then walk (briskly) across the field to your marshalling position.

Race entries are now online at www.racebest.com , please tell your friends.  We have 258 entries so far (185 for the 10 mile, 44 for the 5 mile, 29 for the 2 mile).

And if you want to know more about goosanders, go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_merganser

Marathon (and Half Marathon) Season

Just a reminder that within the Grand Prix there is an “Any Other Marathon” and “Any Other Half Marathon” category, so if you run a marathon or half in Yorkshire or anywhere else in the world, please email in your result (event, date, position, gun time, chip time) to claim your points.  Points could mean prizes!

parkrun

Congratulations to Tally Diamond who was 1st female finisher at Templenewsam 5k parkrun last Saturday. This was 4 days before her 11th birthday.  Happy birthday too!  I suggested that she might be the youngest ever parkrun winner, and was informed that she’d won another one 2 months ago!

The following day at Dewsbury, Valley Striders girls took the first 4 places (they beat all the boys) with 1 Sophie Turner, 2 Tally, 3 Keira Jones and 4 Imogen Idle.

All 4 of them will be representing VS at West Yorkshire Cross Country this coming Sunday, together with Alvie and Laurie O’Brien.  Come on, Striders!

Munich marathon, half marathon and 10k

Results awaited

V S Triathon Championships (from Mike Furby)

The latest GP table is now on the website (follow the “Triathlon” link in the top bar).

Added are Oulton Park Duathlon, Brownlee, Dam Ard and Last of Summer Tri.

As a result of some amazing results from VSTC athletes over the last couple of weeks we do see some changes at the top of the table. Anna Hobbs moves into 2nd overall with her fantastic win at Last of Summer Tri but is still second lady with Alison Price retaining her lead. The other significant change is that Vernon Long has taken over as MVet leader by less than half a point with his excellent AG win at Brownlee Tri as well as a decent result at Dam Ard allowing him to remove two lower scoring races. Daniel Price retains leadership in the Male category and 3rd place overall with Vernon in 4th. Sue Carr remains in the lead of the FVet category. Welcome also to the leaderboard Martin Sutcliffe and Jon Pownall with their first races for VSTC completed.

There are now 37 Striders who have completed at least one triathlon this year.
