Tuesday 23 June Arrangements

·         5:45pm Juniors/Beginners/Improvers training session – early start time and parking arrangements

It is the Vets Race later in the evening and we are expecting a continuous stream of cars coming off King Lane, down Crag Lane and into Leos Car Park from 6:15pm (or even earlier) until 7:15pm (or even later)

We will have early session for juniors, beginners and improvers from 5:45 to 6:45.

We are asking you not to park on Leos car park, nor at Alwoodley Cricket Club, nor at the little car park at the entrance to Leos, because if you do, when you want to leave, you will hold up the traffic coming in.  Options for parking are in front of the shops on King Lane (but not if they are still trading), on The Avenue, or on the Buckstones as you can access Leos from behind Alwoodley Cricket Club http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=428630&y=439980&z=110

Note that if you do park at Leos, we will ask you to move your car straight away or stay till the race starts at 7:30pm.

·         7pm Intermediates and Experienced runners training sessions - cancelled

·         Yorkshire Vets Race

We now have just enough marshals plus one substitute, so if you’ve volunteered, please don’t change your mind.  If you still want to come and help, please be at Leos in front of the clubhouse, at 6:45pm.  And if you want to run the race, you can, all we ask is that you help with the clearing up afterwards, in particular, putting the furniture back in place in the clubhouse.

Please email [email protected] if you can help, see www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmarshals.htm for list of names, click www.valleystriders.org.uk/Yorks_vets_2015.jpg for map of route and www.valleystriders.org.uk/Yorks_vets_2015_start_and_finish.jpg for plan of start and finish

Saturday 11 July - V S Summer Barbecue (from Dan, Becky and Cloughy)

Following the success of last year's Tour De France themed BBQ at Leos Rugby Club, we're doing it again!

In advance of the food and drink:

The cyclists’ plan is to go out on a number of different rides all meeting up at an agreed point then cycling back. All rides will set off from the Thomas Osborne and 10 Warrior Points are available for anyone who joins one of the rides no matter the distance. Keep an eye out on Facebook for more details.

For the runners we have 2 runs to celebrate the reopening of the dam at Eccup.  Both runs will set off at 5pm running the first few km together then splitting for a slightly longer route 11.5km http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/735718177 or a slightly shorter route 9.5km http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/735710627 to get back for the 6.30 kick off!:)

An event has been created on Facebook.

The party will commence with games starting from 6.30pm on the rugby pitches before we then eat a French themed BBQ at 8pm and enjoy drinks late in to the evening. As with last year, we have a bouncy castle booked to entertain the kids.

The event is open to all Valley Striders members, partners and children and the cost will be £10.50 per adult and £6.50 for kids.

Please email [email protected] to confirm your booking. When ordering please let us know if you require a vegetarian option.

Food on 7 July

Numbers of people eating at the later sitting seem to have been dwindling possibly because people didn’t want to risk being volunteered for a position of responsibility at Harewood.

We now have a team to organise the race (thank you!) so it will now be safe to book food.  Info will be on the website soon.

Lots of junior sports days and fun runs this time of year, so please email your results to me!!!

Chevin Fell race (from John Marsham)

I'd never done this before despite it being 'on the doorstep' and it looked like a fun way to get a bit more fast hill work in. With an expected time of around 20 minutes it wasn't my kind of race, but I seemed to do OK in the end. It's a straight-up straight-down sprint (well may be there's a short flatish bit on the top), with the fit able to accelerate on the less steep bits and the rest left plodding behind. Mick Loftus led what was a good turn out of Striders home. A fun race - great to have such 'suburban fell running', as Steve put it, on our doorsteps.

Scafell Pike Marathon, 7th June, 27.5miles, 1800m ascent/descent (from Ross Bibby)

Having done this race for the past two years since its inception and ranking it as one of my favourites, I was keen to run it for a third time, however after a botched then successful laser eye surgery operation and an enforced week and half off running I wasn't sure how I would get on.

The race starts and finishes in Keswick, and genuinely has the most variety and stunning scenery of any race I have taken part in. You can take a ferry across to the start at Nichol End Marina, or jog/walk a couple of miles around instead. From there you run along Derwentwater lakeside to Grange (where the 13k race that starts later turns off), and climb up through Castle Crag in Borrowdale. At this point the half marathon route turns off (which again starts later and Becky was doing) and the marathon carries on to Seatoller, then a short road section to Seathwaite. The "real" race however begins at Seathwaite, where you climb steeply up to Stockley Bridge and the checkpoint at Styhead tarn. I tend to start quite far back in this kind of race, and then gradually work my through the field, especially on the climbs, when some of the road runners and first timers who have set off too quickly soon get found out! I knew I had gained a significant number of places by Styhead, from where previous race knowledge is useful to pick up the trod track to the corridor route that takes you up to the summit of Scafell Pike.

Although conditions were windy, the rain held off and visibility was pretty good most of the way up- that is of course until you get a few hundred metres from the summit plateau, where visibility turned to about 20 metres (which is pretty standard for whenever I seem to go up there!). From the summit it can become tricky in terms of navigation, and certainly underfoot, where you negotiate wet and slippy large boulder fields and scree in between Broad Crag and Ill Crag down to Esk Hause. From there it is a fast but rocky descent back to Styhead, and the return back down to Stockley Bridge and Seathwaite (you can save a few minutes by leaving the path here).

I knew I was in 5th place at this point so I pushed on through farmers fields and along the river to Rosthwaite, then begin the deceptively steep climb up to Watendlath. I had overtaken 4th place at this point, and on the descent past Watendlath Tarn and down to Ashness Bridge I was gaining on the 3rd placed runner. You take in some cracking views of Derwentwater as you cross Ashness bridge and climb but skirt below Falcon and Walla crag, before dropping out and crossing the road to begin the last few miles along the lakeshore back to the finish at Crow Park in Keswick.

The race was won by world trail running champion and local resident Ricky Lightfoot in a new record 3hr40m, but I was chuffed to finish in 4th place in 4hr44m, knocking 23min off my time last year and finishing just 3.5min off second place and 28 seconds off third. Becky thoroughly enjoyed the half marathon, which takes in the first and last quarter of the marathon route, and due to start times meant we finished at pretty much the same time. I would highly recommend these races (check out www.highterrainevents.co.uk for their series, plus maps of the routes) and also makes a very interesting 30 mile training loop from Keswick if you ever find yourself in the Lakes......

1. Ricky Lightfoot, Salomon Racing, 3.40.41

4. Ross Bibby, Valley Striders, 4.44.29

11. Charmaine Horsfall, 4.56.04 (1st female)

(156 finishers)
