Tuesday 2 June 8:45pm –
meeting to discuss Harewood Trail Race
Time to
start organising this year’s Harewood Trail Race for October (or just possibly
13 September if we don’t mind clashing with the Great North Run)
If we
have a similar response as last year from you VS members, I don’t see a problem
getting sufficient marshals, but there are some key appointments we need to
make now to ensure we do not leave the responsibility for planning the event to
too few individuals.
So we
need a race director, an assistant race director (admin and finance), a chief
marshal, an entries manager, a results team leader, a start and finish team
leader, eight section leaders and a number of deputies. Please come along
to the meeting if you will volunteer for one of these positions.
If you
would (a) like to volunteer but can’t make the meeting or (b) are considering
volunteering but need more information, please email harewood@valleystriders.org.uk
Tuesday 23 June –
Yorkshire Veterans race at Leos
This will
be the seventh year that we have hosted this event. We have a 2 lap
course that does a big circuit of the woods around Leos see http://valleystriders.org.uk/Yorks_vets_2014.jpg .
Usually there are about 250 runners and we receive £1 per runner, which after
costs of consumables (plastic cups, red and white tape etc) gives us a profit
for club funds of over £200.
Mick
Tinker and myself will be setting up the course during the afternoon but we
then need
·
4
people (we have 3 so far) at 6pm to help butter and fill sandwiches and/or
bring cakes, they could run the race if they want
·
4 senior marshals (we have 1 so far) at 6pm to run round and check
the marking and then to take the marshals to their places at 6:50pm.
·
6 people (we have 4 so far) at 6pm to help with car parking, they
may then run the race or marshal on the route
·
30 marshals (we have 12 so far) at 6:50pm (it’s the usual Striders
technique of marshalling every corner to avoid problems if pieces of tape are
deliberately moved)
·
6 people (we have 2 so far) at 7:15pm – timekeepers, recorders and
funnel marshals for the finish line
·
A few people (we have none so far) to tidy up afterwards, they
could have run the race
Please
email help@valleystriders.org.uk if
you’re available to help, let us know what job you’d like to do and what time
you’re available to arrive, also whether you’d like to run if we have
sufficient marshals. (Note that although it is a veterans race, under-35’s may
run as “guests”).
Names so
far are at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmarshals.htm
Thank you
in anticipation!
Bradford Millennium Way
relay (nowhere near Bradford) on Sunday 28 June
We still
only have 7 names – we need 10 for one team – in most previous years we have
had 2 teams.
See
previous email www.valleystriders.org.uk/up150516.htm for
details
See http://johncarr5k.org.uk/site/bradford-millennium-way-relay/ for race
information and route
Please
email teams@valleystriders.org.uk if you’d
like to run. List of names so far at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm
Please
reply by Tuesday 2 June at the very latest so I can decide whether it is worth
entering a team.
Endurance Officials Course
in Leeds on Sunday 19 July
Learn
about course design, risk assessment, course set up, marshalling, etc.
Full day course 09:00 to 16:00 by England Athletics tutor. Your course fee paid
by Valley Striders, all you need to do is give up your Sunday. I went on
the risk assessment module a few years ago and found it very interesting and
useful. Email v.s@virgin.net if you’d
like to go and/or need more information. NB may sell out fast as this is
the first course of this type in Leeds for over 3 years.
Membership / EA
registration cards
I’ve just
received my membership card from England Athletics. Have you got yours
yet?
If you
are an adult running member and have joined or renewed since 1 September 2014,
I’d expect you to get yours by the end of May. If you don’t receive one,
please check your status at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm and then
email me info@valleystriders.org.uk.
Note that
we don’t register junior members under 15 with EA, nor do we register
cycling-only members. Those of you who are first claim running members of
other athletics clubs should also receive your cards soon assuming your first
claim has registered you with EA.

RESULTS and REPORTS
Cycling - TLI Series at
Croft Tuesday 12th May –
from Andy Stoneman
Jon
Pownall and Andy Stoneman went to Race 2 of handicapped and age
based TLI Series at Croft Motor Racing Circuit near Darlington. After
racing there a few times in the winter, it was nice to race Croft in the dry!!
It was a great night out, a bit windy but not too bad and a lovely evening (the
setting sun was a bit of an issue). There were four handicapped groups -
*CatE/1/2s (orange), Cat2/3s (yellow), Cat4s (white) and novice (red). As a Cat
3 Andy went in yellow and Jon went in white. After sprinting to win his group
Andy finished 13th overall and 2nd in his age category meaning that
he came home with £10 in his pocket! Jon, having set off in the 'White group'
came in just 7 seconds behind in 26th place.
Cycling - North Yorkshire
Road Evening Road Race League Thursday 14th May – from Andy Stoneman
Race 2 of
the Cat 3/4 North Yorkshire Road Evening Road Race League was held at
Kelfield near Selby. Six Striders lined up at the start of this popular 37 mile
cat3/4 race, inc Alec Pearson, Daniel Price, Gavin Taylor, Andy
Stoneman, and road race first timers, Danny Murray and Jon
Pownall. It was a cool evening with a slight breeze, but with a frantic pace
set on the first lap we were soon warmed up. By the start of the second
lap the race had settled down and and it was a case of staying safe (the
roads aren't closed) and in the pack. Gav and Andy chased down a few attacks
hoping to get in a break-away but there was little cooperation and they
soon fell back into the clutches of the chasing peloton. Averaging 27mph the 7
x 5 mile laps seemed to pass by quickly with most laps taking just 10.5
mins, so it was only just over an hour before we were into the 7th and final
lap. The pace increased slightly but we still had 4 striders in the front half
of the pack (Dan, Gav, Jon and Andy), we flew down from Stillingfleet on
the main road at well over 30mph, took a shallow left into Kelfield and the
jostling for position started, we had to take care through Kelfield as there
were loads of parked cars, but we all stayed rubber side down, and as we
hit the winding narrow lanes, Andy managed to get around the outside of the
pack and into the top 10, and onto the wheel of Richard Sharp of York
Cycleworks, with Gav following just behind. Then it was a case of holding
position through the last few 90 degree corners, and onto the finishing sprint,
where Andy managed to push up and get 5th place with Gav just behind also
grabbing a top 10 place. Jon and Dan crossed the line in the top 20 too (of a
field of 68) so a good night for all VSCC! Results TBC
*Cycle
races are based on various ability categories that are earned through scoring points.
Everyone starting racing starts as a Cat 4 and then works their way up if they
score points (generally awarded to top 10 finishers). 12 points are needed for
Cat 3, 40 for Cat 2 and so on.
Fairfield Horseshoe – from
John Marsham
Three
Striders made the trip over to the Lakes for this classic race - one of the
most pleasant races I always think. A beautiful ridge-line route, with a
largely very runnable descent, and not long enough to require suffering for too
long. We returned with three PBs - even if mine was by 18 seconds, and Kim
& Ross had not done the race before. More significantly Kim returned with a
second place & prize. Sunday followed with more beautiful, cold and breezy
running around the Lakes, listening to the Brathay marathon from above.

Steve
Webb has now updated the VSFC table and this is now on the website see http://www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsclubch.htm
Steve
says “I’ve updated the league to include also Jack Bloor and Stretton Six. We
now have 4 men who have run 5 races, but Ross ‘The Rocket’ Bibby continues to
build extend his lead. Steve and Malcolm had category wins at Jack Bloor, and
if Ann Marsham had joined Kim and Becky in that race then a Ladies 2nd team prize
of beer would have been guaranteed as only Ilkley could close 3 Ladies on the
night. Kim has now taken the lead in the Ladies league.”

VS Club Junior (and adult)
1 mile
There
were 48 under-16’s and 13 over-16’s in the first race of the night. This
was 4 juniors up and 5 adults down on the equivalent race last year.
Well done
to everyone who ran and thanks for coming and for braving the weather – it did
stay dry for the race but had rained immediately before and rained again
immediately after.

VS Club Spring Handicap 5
miles
There
were only 27 runners for the club handicap, compared with 71 for the equivalent
race last year.
I can
explain a few missing
·
The
Esholt 5k was next day, but “only” 18 ran that race, and 3 of these ran both
·
Some Striders had only just returned from River Moy – but there
were “only” 10 or 12 of them
·
There was a cycling time trial on (not sure how many runners were
there)
·
The weather forecast was poor
But where was everyone
else? Please email me! I’m planning the Summer handicap for Tuesday
30 June, so I’m keen to know whether this data is suitable.

for Alex Pagdin in his age-group with a PB of 4:05
LDWA 100 Congratulations to Ian Sanderson and Malcolm
Coles who both successfully completed the LDWA 100 (that’s 100 miles) in
Lancashire. The event started 10:00 Saturday and will finish 10:00
tomorrow (Monday) so as I write, some competitors are still en route.
However Ian and Malcolm both got back with over half a day to spare, Ian’s time
being 1:8:49 (that’s 1 day 8 hours 49 mins) and Malcolm 1:9:59.
Unfortunately Sara Dyer retired today at 5pm after 10 of the 15 checkpoints.
