Tuesday 19 May – VS adult
1 mile, junior 1 mile and club handicap (5 miles)
·
Juniors
and beginners/improvers 1 mile races meet by Eccup reservoir 6:10pm. This
is an out-and-back route, half a mile each way. Adult race will start at
6:10pm, junior race at approximately 6:20pm. NB parents may run with
younger juniors.
·
Adult club handicap (5 miles) meet by Eccup reservoir
6:45pm. This is also an out-and-back route, with a difference which will
be explained on the night. Slowest runner sets off first, fastest
last. If you’ve not run a club handicap before you will be given a start
mark on the night, when you arrive please tell me your estimated time for 5km
or 10km
·
All club members welcome, guests too
·
All races start on the reservoir “towpath” nearest the lodge on
Goodrick Lane (this is the steep hill that goes down to the reservoir from
Alwoodley Lane), postcode LS17 7RW
·
Or see map http://valleystriders.org.uk/hcap10k.jpg for
start point NB this is NOT the race route as the reservoir dam is still closed
Tuesday 23 June –
Yorkshire Veterans race at Leos
This will
be the seventh year that we have hosted this event. We have a 2 lap
course that does a big circuit of the woods around Leos see http://valleystriders.org.uk/Yorks_vets_2014.jpg .
Usually there are about 250 runners and we receive £1 per runner, which after
costs of consumables (plastic cups, red and white tape etc) gives us a profit
for club funds of over £200.
Mick
Tinker and myself will be setting up the course during the afternoon but we
then need
·
A
few people to help butter and fill sandwiches at 6pm and/or bring cakes, they
could run the race if they want
·
4 senior marshals to run round at about 6:00pm and check the marking
and then to take the marshals to their places at 6:50pm.
·
6 people to help with car parking from 6:00pm, they may then run
the race or marshal on the route
·
30 marshals at 6:50pm (it’s the usual Striders technique of
marshalling every corner to avoid problems if pieces of tape are deliberately
moved)
·
6 people – timekeepers, recorders and funnel marshals - for the
finish line at 7:15pm
·
A few people to tidy up afterwards, they could have run the race
Please
email help@valleystriders.org.uk if
you’re available to help, let us know what job you’d like to do and what time
you’re available to arrive, also whether you’d like to run if we have
sufficient marshals. (Note that although it is a veterans race, under-35’s may
run as “guests”).
Thank you
in anticipation!
Bradford Millennium Way
relay (nowhere near Bradford) on Sunday 28 June
In a
recent V S Update I asked for runners and there was also a post in the Fell
Runners Facebook group. So far we have just 5 acceptances. So I’ll try
again, and use last year’s blurb, as that seemed to work!
We are
looking for teams for the Bradford Millennium Way Relay on Sunday 28
June. This is teams of 5 pairs, total 50 miles, all within Bradford City
Council boundary, but nowhere near Bradford, details at http://johncarr5k.org.uk/site/bradford-millennium-way-relay/.
Route starts and finishes at Bingley Rugby Club, and goes via Marsh (near
Oxenhope), Laycock (on the route of the Tour de Yorkshire), Silsden and Ilkley.
We
entered 2 teams last year and it would be great if we could do the same this
year. The first 10 who apply get a guaranteed place.
We won
the mixed team prize from 2002 to 2005 and the vets in 2006 so maybe
this can be the year we get back on the prize list again...
Please
email teams@valleystriders.org.uk if you’d
like to run.
Last year
we had 2 teams – our men finished 9th and our ladies 30th.
Endurance Officials Course
in Leeds on Sunday 19 July
Learn
about course design, risk assessment, course set up, marshalling, etc.
Full day course 09:00 to 16:00 by England Athletics tutor. Your course fee paid
by Valley Striders, all you need to do is give up your Sunday. I went on
the risk assessment module a few years ago and found it very interesting and
useful. Email v.s@virgin.net if you’d
like to go and/or need more information. NB may sell out fast as this is
the first course of this type in Leeds for over 3 years.
Membership / EA
registration cards
We have
recently paid registration fees to England Athletics on behalf of all adult
running members who have joined or renewed since 1 September 2014, and those of
you in this status should be receiving membership cards from them within the
next 3 weeks.
Note that
we don’t register junior members under 15 with EA, nor do we register
cycling-only members. Those of you who are first claim running members of
other athletics clubs should also receive your cards soon assuming your first
claim has registered you with EA.
See www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm

Apologies,
I’ve not had time to process these (still looking for the instruction manual
for the stopwatch), the results will be in the next V S Update.
Stretton Six Summits –
from Steve Dixon
Saturday 9 May. English Fell Championship Medium
Counter. 6.3 miles and 3250 ft of ascent
The Long
Mynd, towering above Church Stretton, is an upland area I've wanted to explore
for a long time and this new race route devised by Mercia Fell Runners for the
English Championships allowed me to fulfil this ambition at last.
The Mynd,
forms part of the Shropshire Hills, and straddles that vague area between the
West Midlands and the Welsh Borders. It has a unique scenic quality
characterised by whale-backed heather and grass moorland rising to over 500
metres, running north to south with a series of long meandering valleys (called
batches) cutting into it and draining to the east.
The race
route ran across the grain of this topography firstly in a southerly direction
out of Church Stretton visiting the summits of Burway Hill, Yearlet, Grindle
and Callow before returning northwards back to CS via Nils and Ashlet. The
ascents were mostly very steep and lung bursting but the descents seemed to
plunge vertically into the valley bottoms and made for extremely exciting
running and definitely not for the feint hearted like me! It was however a
stunning route showing off to good effect the dramatic landscape that makes up
the Mynd.
Mercia
FRC didn't expect the winner to go under 60 minutes and were confident to offer
extra prizes for anyone who went sub one hour. Five runners managed to do that
depleting the clubs coffers by £100. I'm sure I saw one of the race organisers
dashing off to the Barclays cash dispenser in town shortly before the
presentations! And to maintain equality I believe the 6 women who
finished under 75 minutes also got similar financial recognition.
I was the
only Strider running this event and, although just failing to scrape into the
top two thirds of the field in a little over 1hr 31mins, I was pleased to have
moved up the M60 rankings from 20th out of 23 at the 'short' Flower Scar Champs
Race to 13th out of 23 in this 'medium' event. I hope to improve significantly
in the next Championship Race at Duddon in the Lake District, it being a 'long'
counter.
Tom
Addison of Helm Hill was first home in 59mins 01secs
Annie
Conway of Ambleside was First Lady in 66mins 55secs
I was
212th in 91mins 36secs
310
finished but there are no details as to how many retirements there were.
It's a
terrific area for running, walking, road/mountain biking and well worth
devoting at least a weekend around a fell race in this area.
Charlie
Leventon (Julia's dad) the race starter/time keeper wanted to know why there
were no other Striders running in this event! My only explanation was the clash
with the Leeds Half Marathon but how many fell running Striders were seen running
up Stonegate Road that weekend?! We have the opportunity to tell him in early
February 2016 when the next Long Mynd Valleys Fell Race takes place!
Steve
