Mick
Tinker posted “Just realised that my first triathlon was half a lifetime ago in
1984. It was a fairly new sport then and not regulated. Mine was at Aireborough
sports centre and was a 1000m-ish swim, then a 9 mile run, then an 18 mile bike
ride (which was 3 laps down through Esholt sewage works and up Rawdon Bank). we
were given 10 minutes for each transition so time to change and have tea and
biscuits. I came 35th of 70 in 1984 and 27th of 79 in 1985. a certain Steve
O'Callaghan came 6th and Yvonne Bisset was 3rd lady”

Sad news - former VS
member Henry Lang killed in cycle accident
Former VS
member Bill Murphy emailed me with a link to the BBC website
A cyclist
who was killed after being hit by a dust cart in Richmond has been named as
Henry Lang. The 40-year-old IT specialist died yesterday, July 22, a day after
being hit by a dust cart in Kew Foot Road at the junction with St John’s Grove
by the A316 in Richmond. Mr Lang suffered major head injuries and was airlifted
to the Royal London Hospital but doctors could not save him. The business
analyst, from Twickenham, was working at Photobox at the time of his death and
previously worked for the Metropolitan Police as a business analyst. Mr Lang is
the second cyclist to be killed this week after a 25-year-old man was hit by a
car in Merton. Detective Sergeant John Hartfree, of the serious collision investigation
unit based at Merton, said: “The road would have been very busy at the time of
the collision and I believe that a number of people would have seen the
incident. The driver of the dust cart stopped at the scene but was not
arrested. The investigation continues
I’ve
looked through the VS website and found that Henry joined us in July 2001 and
very quickly improved such that in 2002 he ran 1:22:19 in the Leeds Half,
1:00:58 in the Otley 10 (11th overall), and was joint winner of the VS Grand Prix!
He also ran in relays - was part of our inaugural Bradford Millennium Way team
(we recced leg 2 together but he ran in the A team, I ran in the mixed), in a
VS team that finished 4th in the Danefield Relay and in a VS team that finished
6th in the Leeds Country Way. For more results from 2002, see http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsnews.htm
A couple
of Striders have mentioned that they particularly remember Henry because he
used to wear very long shorts (almost to his knee) when the prevailing fashion
(for men) was very skimpy as can be seen on photos on the website.
