Tuesday 22 July

Usual sessions at 6pm and 7pm - details of the sessions are on the website.

Wednesday 23 July – Golden Acre Relay

Teams of 3, each runner runs about 2½ miles, enter on the night, see http://www.abbeyrunners.co.uk/our-races/golden-acre-relay/ for full details.

Valley Striders members should make up their own teams, anyone looking for a friend or two to make up a team can do via facebook or just turn up on the night where you will be sure to find other runners looking to make up teams..

I believe that 3 or 4 teams have already been organised.  You can use any name when you enter a team, but it would be nice if you put “Valley” and/or “Striders” somewhere in the title.

Tuesday 29 July – Valley Striders Junior Mile and Valley Striders Club Handicap

These are for V S club members, but friends and family also welcome to run.

Both races are from the footpath by Eccup Reservoir.  Meet here http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=429750&Y=441300&A=Y&Z=3

Juniors please meet 6:10pm.  The race will start at 6:20pm prompt, and is half a mile on the footpath, a U-turn and half a mile back.  Parents and members of Kathy’s beginners group may also run (and will be timed).

Seniors please meet at 6:40pm.  There will be a set of handicap start marks pinned to the fence, if you have not run as a Valley Strider before you will need to let us know (on the night) your best recent 5k or 10k time (or guess!), and we will calculate a start mark for you (*).  The first runner will start at 6:50pm prompt for an off-road route via Eccup Village to Emmerdale.  The return route will depend on whether or not the dam is open. Runners will set off slowest first and the handicap cup is presented to the first runner across the line.  * Note that the cup can only be won by someone with a pre-calculated start mark.  Grand Prix points are awarded on run time.

There will be food afterwards at Leos, more details to follow.

Sunday 31 August – Leeds Country Way Relay – now we need some reserves!

All the details were in the last couple of emails and are also on the VS website and also at http://www.kippaxharriers.org.uk/lcwv2.htm.

We now have 72 runners which is exactly enough for 6 teams, so we now need some RESERVES.  On previous experience, we will need at least 6, so if you’re available on 31 August, please email teams@valleystriders.org.uk.

If you have signed up, please check www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm to see if your name is there!  If you’d like to be paired with someone, or if you have a preference for an early (finish before 11:00) leg or late (start after 13:00) leg, please email the “teams” account ASAP.

The Men’s, Ladies and Vets teams will be announced the middle of next week, the other 3 teams next weekend.

Danefield Relay – from Ross Bibby

A few of us did the Danefield relay last week on Otley Chevin, teams of 3, 3 miles each

1st placed team - 52.46

11th - Valley Striders 65.28 - Andy Bell (21.17), Kim Spence (23.07), Ross Bibby (21.04) - 1st mixed team (although no prize!)

A few other Striders attended too in random teams

20th - “Roundhay Park Veterans” included Joe Steele (22.11) and Graham Pawley (24.21)

24th - “Tour De Roundhay” included Hannah Corne (23.33) and they picked up the fastest female team prize in 70.10

There were 84 teams

English Sprint Triathlon Championships – from Howard Jeffrey

I went down Milton Keynes way on Sunday to mix it with the nation’s best at the English sprint triathlon championships hosted at the Big Cow event at Emberton. Made the start in good shape and had a solid performance in near perfect conditions to come 6th out of 10 in my age group and 227th out of 327 finishers.

100 metres at the junior session at GSAL

There were 51 juniors at our training session at GSAL last Tuesday and all ran a timed 100 metres after practice sessions over shorter distances.  There were also 5 adults who had a go (indicated as “>21” in the results).  And 8 Striders had two attempts - I would normally have removed these, but it is interesting to see how consistent their two runs were so I have left them in.

Thanks to Janet Tynan, Komal Hans, Emma Rosser, Paul Fotherby, Tony Vine and Max Vine for their support.

Tour De France – message from Valley Striders founder Stuart StJohn

Hi Bob & hope all is well. This is just a brief note to say I was down for the Tour de France weekend in Leeds & Harrogate on Saturday and out at Blubberhouses on Sunday on the bike where I managed to see several of the Club cyclists on the A59 road so if any of them remember seeing a chap on a Mountain Bike saying 'Come on Striders' then that was me. I was stationary at the time near Menwith Hill. Also down on the Fewston reservoir head later on seeing this bloke running towards me with a noticeable style & I'd spotted who it was even before I was close enough to see his face; it was the beer man namely, Mr Briscoe, and still going strong and looking good. A fabulous weekend which I think will never be repeated. My regards to everybody and take care.

Stuart.

Personality, Stress and Activity Choice - Masters Research

A student from Leeds is hoping to discover how much influence personality type and ashtanga yoga, running or playing an instrument has on stress levels.

Sarah Barcham, a psychology masters student from Leeds Metropolitan University, is calling on people with a background in ashtanga yoga, running or playing a musical instrument to participate in her online survey.

Research shows the importance of managing and reducing stress in our daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Studies have also shown that personality type can also greatly influence the effect of stress.

The results will be available in October. To take part in the survey, go to http://tinyurl.com/nkwygwm
