Valley Striders Roundhay parkrun Takeover Day – This Saturday 3rd
May – message from Alex
Hello everyone! As many of you will have seen on the
Facebook page, we are currently looking well equipped for Saturday. All we are
missing is someone to pace sub-35, this is a time that we’ve been told a lot of
people aim for, so we thought it might be a good one to do if we are able. Any
takers?
Please can everyone that I have highlighted in green
(below) arrive for 8.30ish so that you have time to be briefed if you’re unsure
on what you’re doing and also help out where required. If you are pacing and
therefore in purple, please feel free to arrive a little later for 8.45ish,
there will be a pacing bib for you wear over your Valley Strider vest.
*A note for pacers*
·
I think it would be
useful if all pacers can stand with me for the run briefing so that anyone
wanting to follow a particular pacer can see who you are and know who to
follow.
·
It’s been
suggested that there might be a friendly competition with Roundhay Runners to
see whose pacers made it closest to their target times! No pressure! ;-)
*A note for people that like cake*
·
I am still looking for a
few volunteers to bring some cakes with them – if anyone thinks they can manage
that, it would be much appreciated.
And finally, please do wear your Valley Striders vests
and hoodies, this is a brilliant opportunity to promote our club and show the
presence we have at Roundhay parkrun. For those of you that aren’t
volunteering, but would like to run and perhaps more regularly run at Hyde
Park, it would be excellent if you would come along to Roundhay to show your
support.
Thank you to everyone that has offered their help, it
really is appreciated!
See you all on Saturday! Alex :-)

2014 Three Peaks Fell Race
Report – from Mick Loftus
The day
of the 60th Three Peaks Fells Race looked wet and foreboding. All the
talk before the race was about how many layers to wear; wind proof or water
proof, base layer or just vest. The organisers were constantly
reiterating the mandatory kit list over the loud speakers.
Then with minutes to spare the rain eased, the optimistic stripped off before
the start. Then we were away, through the village of Horton with lots of
spectators and up towards Pen-y-ghent. Within moments anyone who hadn't
adjusted their clothing was roasting. The sky had cleared and it
miraculously turned into a beautiful day. The first climb is a nervous
affair for most. Too fast or too slow? Have I done enough training?
Have I worn the right shoes? Can I really do this? As the path steepens,
everyone begins to find the answers.
Once I had the first peak and initial descent out of the way, I began to
'settle in' to the rhythm of the day. I remembered to force myself to eat
and drink early on while on the flat easy running sections, not because I felt
I needed it but for later on when I would. Out to the road section I kept
a steady comfortable pace, trying not to think ahead too much. Ribblehead
came and went, up the steps we passed the viaduct without a glance, then the
hard work really began.
The beck was easily crossed this year but the bogs beyond proved a little more
tricky. My nether regions got more intimately acquainted with the black
ooze than I would have liked. Whernside then reared up ahead. I
kept my head down and didn't look at the destination, with lots of assistance
from my hands, I crawled up and onto the windy plateau. The wind was
strong across the top but faded quickly as we descended down the steep steps
and rocks.
The Hill Inn area was busy with spectators enjoying the warm sunshine.
Turning away from the crowds we faced the lonely section towards
Ingleborough. Now with runners spread out and with around three hours of
punishment in your legs it is hard to keep momentum rolling. The steep
climb follows almost as a relief but this is short lived. Everyone is
self-absorbed as they pull upwards. Through the style and onto the final
ramp up to the rocky plateau. I shuffled over the uneven rocky summit to
the control, checked my watch. Good, still on for my target time, I just
had to hold it together for the long descent.
The way back to Horton is not to be under-estimated. I passed a number of
cramp ridden hobbling runners and others who had just 'had it' and were jogging
slowly. Wet muddy, rocky and slippy, this section has it all and blasted
legs struggle to cope. Eventually the course turns decisively down through more
limestone, with the finish field in sight but still some distance off. I
concentrated on staying upright and keeping going. Then into the last
fields with a couple of modest rises that has us all groaning but there can be
no walking now! Under the railway, through the garden, down the driveway,
over the road and into the finish field, hear your name announced and over the
line. Everyone a champion!
We had 14 Striders competing this
year, the most ever perhaps? We were led home by an in form Mick Wrench,
getting his pb, with the rest of us spread out over the next hour or so.
Richard Adcock was the last Strider home but arguably his was the greatest
achievement having completed the Marathon des Sables just last week!
Race
winners were Ricky Lightfoot 02:53:16 and Victoria Wilkinson 03:21:32 (17th
overall). Striders results:

NB Steve
Webb has updated the V S Fell Championship table – this will be on the website
this weekend. He says:
“Fell league now available for first publication
this season, to include the results of the Three Peaks. Messrs Bibby and
Loftus have already chalked up five scoring runs and are contesting the
lead. The ladies have not been racing so prolifically to date; but
there is still a long way to go and many summits to be visited.”

He
emailed “A quick note to let you know about some good news. After thinking I
had just missed out, I just realised I’ve qualified for the European
Championships next year after my efforts at Stockton on Sunday.
I’ll fire
up a race report when I get time, it was a really fun event that other people
might fancy next time. I’m now off to look at GBR race suits!”
Huddersfield Marathon
After a
disappointing London, Andy May came back to win the Hudderfield marathon in
2:57:59, over 8 minutes clear of the field.
Dusan
Svoboda also had a great run after a poor London and finished 7th in
3:34:33
There
were 102 finishers in the marathon and 114 in the half marathon.

Congratulations
to cup winner Kate Brady, to new member John Hobbs with fastest time on the
night, and to Alex Irvine who won the junior race and then finished 3rd
in the handicap
71
finishers was just 3 short of the record set last summer.
Note that
as there were more than 50 runners, the new GP scoring system was used, the
fastest runner scored 100pts, the slowest runner scored 50pts with everyone
else spread equally in between.
There was
the usual muttering at the start about handicaps, and I did find out later that
evening that one was wrong. Deborah Fraites’ handicap had been based on
her best recent time which was at the Norton 9. The system converts this
to an estimated time for 5 miles using ratios in the age-graded tables.
But there is no entry in the AG tables for 9 miles so I used 10.
Unfortunately I didn’t pro-rate Deborah’s time up for the extra mile, so it
looked like she’d run 10% faster than she actually did, and she was given a
handicap 9:30 when it should have been 4:30. The results above have been
recalculated and Deborah has moved up from 70th place to 15th.
Sorry, Deborah!
We did a
demo and audit of the handicap calculations last summer. If anyone else
would like to see how the handicaps are calculated, I’ll be doing a demo 9pm on
Tuesday 20 May (it’s a pie and peas night)
That’s
all for now, see you Saturday!
Bob
