Sunday 2 March – Final Peco Race

It’s the final Peco race of the season at Shipley this Sunday, hope to see lots of Striders there!  Race information is at www.pecoxc.co.uk/pages/race5.html

The race instructions say “The race HQ will be near the tennis courts in the park”.  I’ll tell you where I think this is.  If you look at the first map on the website, then on the right hand side of the map, just above half way down, you will see the 8 green tennis courts.  Just below the tennis courts you’ll see a path leading from the A650.  It looks like a road but it is a wide tarmac path, and there are some big iron gates near the A650.  So park as safely as you can nearest to this point.

A good postcode for Satnav is BD18 3BX.  Note also the 30mph speed limits and lots of speed cameras on the Rodley to Shipley road!

Note that anyone who runs all 5 races gets an award, but because Striders organised race 4, they are also entitled to an award if they ran races 1, 2, 3 and 5!

If, on the other hand, this will be your first race, check www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm to see if you’ve been registered.  If you have, your number will be available for you under the Striders flag.  If not, then you can still register on the day as a guest.

See you Sunday!

Valley Striders awarded £4,000 cycling grant

Many of you will have seen facebook posts earlier this week about Valley Striders buying two bikes and providing free ride leader training.

These are being paid for out of a grant awarded to Valley Striders by the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.

Details of the grant and how the rest of the money will be spent were discussed at a full committee meeting last Tuesday.

We’ll email all Striders members in the next few days with more information!

Sunday 23 March – Peco Relays at Barnbow Woods (Crossgates)

Just to repeat the information from the Peco website contained in last week’s V S Update:

·         The Club Team race will be between a single team selected by each club. This team must contain at least 1 Lady and at least 1 Vet (40+) and no more than 1 Male under 40.

·         In addition, there will be prizes for the first ‘other’ teams in each of the following categories: M Open, M Vets (40+), M SuperVets (50+), F Open, F Vets (40+), F SuperVets (50+) and ‘Mixed’ (at least 1 F per team).

·         There will also be a 3 x 1.5 mile-ish relay for Juniors (aged 8 – 16). Teams must contain at least 1 U11 and at least 1 U13. Prizes for the first Boys, Girls and ‘Mixed’ teams.

·         After the presentation of prizes for this race, we will hold the PECO XC League Presentations at Barnbow Social Club. These will start at 1.30pm with the Juniors, and continue with the Seniors at 2.00pm. This should allow for those who are racing elsewhere on this date to get there in time.

Message to Striders and Junior Striders

·         Please email [email protected] by Tuesday 11 March if you want to run in these relays.

·         We’ll select 3 for the Valley Striders Club Team and then match and make other teams of three to give best fit into the categories above.

·         I guess if we have a number not a multiple of 3, someone runs 2 legs or we have an alliance with another club as in the Golden Acre Relays

Buggy racing

Following Andy Bell’s 23:12 at Roundhay parkrun pushing a double buggy, I emailed Tom Williams at parkrun, and got this reply

“We don't tend to keep track of unusual records, simply due to the logistics of maintaining them across 250 weekly events. In the case of buggies we specifically don't publish them as we don't want to encourage people to take risks with their kids. I know Andy well and that is an impressive time, I do think that people have gone under 20 minutes with a double on some courses though. Perhaps more impressive was James Smith's 17:25 pushing a single buggy around Roundhay!”

So, Andy, your options seem to be

·         Get faster

·         Get Hannah to help you push

·         Borrow a lighter child from someone

·         Have another child and go for the triple buggy record

Football team

Before anyone posts on facebook about Valley Striders further diversification, just to say that this a request from Phil Staines, father of one of our junior runners, who says

“Fin’s football team, Pool AFC is looking for new players for their U13 boys football team - birthdate between 1/9/2000 and 31/8/2001 - looking ahead to next season as U14’s”.

“The U13s only started this season and have been very successful and are on course for promotion!  The team has a very enthusiastic coach and manager.  They play on Sundays. Their home games are played just outside Pool, on the way to Otley, and they train at St Mary's Guiseley on a Thursday night”.

Email Phil [email protected] for more information.
