Peco this Sunday

See www.pecoxc.co.uk for race details.

Juniors, just turn up, pay your race fee and run. There are no race numbers, just collect a tag when you finish.  Tip: take a look at the course before you run, in particular take a look at the final 200 metres to the finish, it is good to know when to speed up and exactly where the finish line will be.

Seniors, if you ran race 1 or 2, don’t forget your number, then pay at race registration desk.  If you’ve not run before, check you are on www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm .  Your number will be in a bag at the foot of the V S flag.  Then go and pay.  Same tip as for juniors, check where the finish is, and your last 200 metres.  Also check the route to the pub afterwards, it is round some back streets and some have been known to set off but not arrive!

I have some forms for Meanwood Trail to be handed out at the end of the junior races and the senior race.  Please help!

Next Tuesday training

It will be the second Tuesday in the month so intermediates and experienced runners are at Leeds Met Track at 7pm.  If you’ve not been before, see the website homepage for links for maps and directions.  Beginners, improvers and juniors are at Leos at 6pm as usual.

Note that last Tuesday, in spite of the poor weather, there were over 100 Striders across the 5 training sessions – 45 juniors, about 25 beginners/improvers, and well over 30 at the 7pm sessions.

Brass Monkey next Sunday

Note that race number transfers are available before the day.  Valley Striders’ policy is that unauthorised swapping of numbers is unacceptable at any time, but particularly when there is a method available for an authorised swap.  If you are taking someone’s number, please follow the official procedures and pay the £5.

Canal 5 mile handicap - message from John Hallas

When I worked in Leeds centre a few years ago I started a 5 mile handicap event which ran from the canal under the bridge on Whitehall Rd to Nr Kirkstall along the canal and return which was exactly 5 miles.

Mick Brearley now organises them occasionally and the next is on Thurs 13th Feb. I think it starts at 12:30 (or maybe 12:15)

If anybody wants to enter Mick can be contacted at [email protected] . Tell him I mentioned it

Help wanted in February and April (and change of venue for Peco)

This is the third time I’ve included this request and so far we only have 6 replies for Peco and 2 for Meanwood.  I know it’s early days, but having had marshalling problems (runners misdirected) at both Meanwood and Harewood last year, (and both times we thought we had enough marshals), I hope you can understand my concern.  So, if you are probably available for one or both, please reply and say “probable”, that will be a start!

On Sunday 16 February we’re organising Peco Race 4.  This will be at the old West Park School playing fields, a venue used for the West Yorkshire XC last November, but we have a more interesting route planned through the woods and out to Beckett Park and back (assuming we have enough marshals). We need about 15 people to help set up the course, help with car parking and do the race admin (accepting entries) – these people will be able to run.  And we will need about 30 marshals including recorders and timekeepers.  We are sharing marshalling responsibilities with Airecentre Pacers but they are a much smaller club than us, so I’m expecting that we will need to provide the majority.  Please email [email protected] if you know you’re available on that date and say whether you will do pre-race, during-race or both).

On Saturday 12 April we’re organising the Meanwood Trail and Junior Races from Leos.  Please keep the date free (and please email [email protected] if you know you’re probably available on that date).

List of marshals will be updated at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmarshals.htm
