Most of this email was written before the weekend.  This weekend’s results from West Yorks XC, Shepherd’s Skyline and Guy Fawkes will be in the next edition.

Just one result from the weekend for you now – Simon Midwood ran 2:43:45 at New York.

Harewood Trail Races

Many many thanks to everyone from Valley Striders who supported.  We had 487 finishers in total and made a profit of around £750 plus additional donations of around £250 – to be shared between Lineham Farm and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.  Some feedback from the runners later in this email.

Training – Tuesday 5 November

No pie’n’peas next Tuesday as we suspect many will be at the Roundhay Park bonfire or at home.

But we still have 5 training sessions, all meeting at Leos.  Juniors and beginners/improvers are at 6pm.  And at 7pm, intermediates, experienced runners and fell running groups.  Simon Vallance is leading the monthly fell running group with a headtorch session in Adel Woods

Wedding day Roundhay Parkrun – Saturday 16 November – message from Sarah & Gary

We've decided to start our wedding day on November 16th with a Roundhay Parkrun. Gary, jealous of the attention paid to the bride, will be wearing a wedding dress and throwing a bouquet at the end. Sarah will be dressed as a groom (and taking it very easy to avoid falling on her face again...) We'd love it if as many Striders as possible could join us. If you've ever longed to be a bridesmaid, this is your chance! Bridesmaid dresses (especially on boys) welcome but not compulsory.

Pie’n’Peas – Tuesday 19 November

Next VS Food will be 19 November and will be lasagne, order meat or veggie version, whether or not you want apple pie, and whether you want to eat at 7:15 or 8:30 to [email protected] before 10pm Sunday 17 November.

184 Striders have run at least one race and 34 have already run 8 or more, this qualifying for a VSGP commemorative technical t-shirt.

Gary Mann leads from Steve Webb and John Shanks.  But Simon Midwood, Gwil Thomas and Paul Kaiser are all poised to overtake Gary & co as they have each run 7 races.  Myra leads the ladies ahead of Sue Sunderland and Sharon Kaiser.  I think only Kim Threadgall can overtake Myra and she must run 3 of the final 4 races to get 8.   See www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsgp2013.xls

Reminder that if you want to run in West Yorks XC race 3, you need to email [email protected] before 10pm Tuesday 5 November.  The cost is £12, this will pay for race 3 and 4.

Reminder that if you want to run any race in the Peco XC League you need to email [email protected] before 10pm Thursday 21 November.  There is no charge to register, just pay on the day for each race you run.  You can check your name is listed at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm

·         John Marsham & Steve Dixon need to bag a Short.

·         Mick Loftus, Me, Simon Vallance, Eirik Stangnes, Dan Murray, Alastair Smyth and Graham Ford need to bag a Medium.

·         Becky Bibby needs a Long

Little Stretton to Stiperstones – information from Julia Leventon

Sunday 24th November is the 26th running of the annual Little Stretton to Stiperstones timetrial in Shropshire.  It’s one of my favourite races though I may be biased as it was founded and organised for the first 25 years by my Dad.  The deal is that you start at Little Stretton and you choose your route to the Stiperstones - route choice is a source of heated discussion but every route takes you over the Longmynd and the Stiperstones.  Start times are staggered so that you can't just run as a pack - you can run as a single or in pairs.  Its attracted quality competition over the years, partly as its on Mercia home terrain.

Tomas and I will be heading down there for the weekend.  If you fancy coming down for an introduction to the brilliance of the Shropshire hills, I would be very happy to discuss route choices and logistics.

Harewood Trail

One or two problems, not helped by the caravans for the Ladyboys of Bangkok being in the same field as our race and them wanting to move the caravans off site half an hour before our race started.

We re-routed our junior race to avoid them but forgot to tell the marshals for the 5 mile race that there was no change to this race, as a consequence the first 18 runners did 0.3 mile extra and at one point in time, runners were coming in to the finish in opposite directions.

And a Kirkstall Harrier even wrote on her blog about it: http://stoprunningaway.com/2013/10/31/harewood-trail-race-review/

I had an interesting email conversation (numbers and times removed)

·         Runner - I ran the 10 mile Harewood rally trail today and I have looked at the results and I am not on the results list. My number is (number) and I finished around (time) mins.   Please let me know if my result will be added as I paid to get a time and if my result is not added I would like a refund.

·         Me – That’s easily fixed.  We have a number (number) in (position) position, and this shows as an unattached M60.  I think it very unlikely that an unattached M60 would finish so high, and I think it a lot more likely that there has been a transcription error (number1) instead of (number2). I’ll fix it in the next issue of the results.  By the way I’ve copied the race organiser of the (race name) (race organised by runner’s club).  Next time you see him have a chat with him about the sort of things that can go wrong with races, we just do our best to please!

·         Runner - That's great thanks just wanted to make sure I get a time. Thanks for your quick response.

Race Report – Rowbotham's Round Rotherham trail race – from Ian Sanderson

A short report on a long race, Rowbotham's Round Rotherham trail race. You wouldn't think there be many people wanting to run 50 miles around Rotherham, but it's been going for 31 years so there must be something to be said for it. And if you are thinking of dipping a toe into the strange world of ultra-marathons, this is actually a very good introductory race. Why? Well, it's as flat as you are going to get outside of Norfolk. It starts at dawn, so you've got a good chance of finishing in daylight. It's only a short drive from Leeds, so you can spend a sleepless night in your own bed before the race. It has a decent size field of runners and walkers, so plenty of people to follow and you won't be last. It's a way-marked route and the organisers have produced fantastic 'strip maps' for navigation (GPS also allowed). It's good Yorkshire value at £13, including t-shirt, cloth badge, certificate, refreshments at seven check-points (not quite LDWA standard) and a two course meal at the finish. There are very few stiles to climb over on the route (that becomes important in the last 20 miles!). And it's not as grim as it sounds.

The scenery in the first part of the event is a bit mixed, including a few industrial estates and landscaped pit heaps, but there's some pleasant bits in-between. And it tends to more rolling farmland (complete with sticky mud) and surprisingly pretty villages in the second half. Some people struggle in the later stages because the route is too flat - there are only a few hills and the whole circuit is very runable with no obvious walking breaks. But I'm not proud and had no problem walking on flat sections early on, taking my time at checkpoints, slowing to chat to people, and did the first half in a restrained 4:20. I really wasn't looking forward to the second half but I had obviously got my pacing about right and I started feeling a bit more confident as the miles rolled by and I began passing people. And then, just as I was really starting to flag, finally, thankfully, we got a proper hill and a proper long walking break (yes, ultra-runners look forward to hills - I told you it was a strange world)! And a nice downhill jog to the last checkpoint, only 3 miles from the finish. While not managing much more than a brisk shuffle at this stage, I was still shuffling faster than many people at the end and I felt quite please with myself as I arrived back at the start in 9:19 and 44th place. To put that in perspective, the winning time was under 7 hours (!) and 236 finished, including a bus-load of runners from Portsmouth?

So if you've done a decent amount of mileage in training for a marathon next autumn, and find yourself wondering if you could get away with doing a 'bonus' ultra-marathon for no extra effort, you might want to consider this race. Or seek professional counselling.
