Sent: 27 September 2013 00:13

Yes, I’m sure that you gets lots of emails that say “Urgent” and aren’t, but this V S Update is urgent-ish

·         West Yorks XC entries need to be in by Sunday 10pm

·         Pie and peas orders for Tuesday 1st need to be in by Sunday 10pm

·         On Tuesday 1st the “later” sessions are brought forward to 6:45pm.  There will also be a fell session.

·         You need to wear a reflective bib for all VS evening sessions from 1st October

·         It’s the AGM on Tuesday 1st at 8:30pm

West Yorkshire Cross Country – closing date Sunday 29 September

We enter two leagues in the autumn/winter, the West Yorkshire has 4 races October to December, the Peco 5 races November to March.

Entries for the WY Series are required to be in to us by 10pm Sunday 29 September.  Please email [email protected] if you want to enter.  You can check whether your email has been “processed” at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm .  If you’ve entered but are not on the list, please email [email protected]

Cost is £12 for seniors, £6 for juniors.  This is the cost for the series, not the cost per race!  Unbeatable value!

Race dates

·         Sunday 20 October at Wakefield

·         Saturday 2 November at Pudsey

·         Sunday 17 November at Leeds

·         Sunday 1 December at Guiseley

There are 10 races at each event, start times are from 11:45 (1.5km for U11 boys) through to 13:30 (6km senior women) and 14:15 (10km senior men).

Juniors require EA affiliation (£10),  age groups are as follows

·         Under 17 is born between 1 Sep 1996 and 31 Aug 1998 i.e. is aged 15 or 16 on 31 Aug/1 Sep 2013

·         Under 15 is born between 1 Sep 1998 and 31 Aug 2000 i.e. is aged 13 or 14 on 31 Aug/1 Sep 2013

·         Under 13 is born between 1 Sep 2000 and 19 Oct 2002 i.e. is aged 11 or 12 on 31 Aug/1 Sep or is 10 on that date but has their 11th birthday before 19 Oct

·         Under 11 is born between 19 Oct 2002 and 19 Oct 2004

Vets age groups are much simpler, they are purely the age on 19 October in 5 year bands.

Pie and peas - Tuesday 1 October

There will be two sittings, one at 7:15pm and the other, earlier than normal, at 8:15pm

Book at [email protected] before 10pm Sunday choosing meat or veggie pie, mushy peas or baked beans, and whether you want apple pie, and which sitting you want to go to.

Training sessions - Tuesday 1 October

Juniors and Beginners/improvers will be 6pm

Intermediates and experienced runners will both start earlier than normal, at 6:45pm

There will also be a fell session on the fields around Leos also with an earlier start of 6.45pm.  Simon says the focus will be on moving quickly over rough ground - aiming to make it a fun session, so please come along if you can - we shouldn’t need head torches, but fell or trail shoes are advisable.

Reflective bibs

Reflective bibs are compulsory for all sessions (except 6pm Tuesdays).

You won’t be allowed to run with a group without one.

Bibs are available from most sports shops.  Sports Direct seems to be the cheapest at £3.50, but get there quickly before the stock is snapped up by other clubs.

Annual General Meeting – Tuesday 1 October 8:30pm at Leos

Please take a look at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsconst.htm and then link to “Committee/Contacts”, you’ll see all the people involved with Striders activities.  If you’re interested in any particular area we’d welcome your support, maybe initially to “shadow” for a year.

Or if you’ve only just joined the club, come along and listen this time, maybe ask a question or two, see how it goes in the coming year.

The meeting will probably go on till 10:15, but some will leave earlier, this is not a problem.

That’s the urgent stuff done but still plenty more in this week’s edition

“Light Night” in Leeds on Friday 4 October

Message from Holly [email protected]

It's “Light Night” in Leeds on the 4th October and I'm looking for arty runners to help shepherd runners around the art installations. Runs last an hour, starting 5pm, 6pm, 7.30 and 8.30. The first is 1.5k for beginners and then 5k for faster runners, then repeated at 7.30 and 8.30pm.

Come and give me a hand if you can spare an hour - it would be lovely to see you on the night...don't forget fairy lights, head torches and tinsel...I'm going for the fairy look!

Chester Marathon (6 October) – place available

Message from George Black

I am unable to start in the Chester Marathon due to be held on 6th October. There are no refunds  or deferrals allowed but numbers can be OFFICIALLY transferred. The entry fee is £45 but if any club member would like the place they can have it free. I know it is short notice but I hope someone can make use of the opportunity. They can telephone me on 01337 831687 and I will make the arrangements.

I have had a problem over the last few weeks as my body appears to have shut down as far as running is concerned. I failed to break 4 hours for the Moray Marathon when I thought a 3:20 was possible. I did not hit the wall I just never got going and I could not get my heart rate up. This was followed by a 5k race last Saturday when I took 29:45, some 8 minutes outside my own age group course record.

Yesterday I started in the Scottish 10K Championship, at Stirling. However when I got to the first kilometre in 5:10 with my heart rate registering 90% I decided to stop.

I am going to take 4 weeks rest and see if this helps. My main aim is the World Age Group Duathlon Champs next may so hopefully I have plenty of time to recover. Best wishes George

Work Experience Placement required

Message from Callum Parton   [email protected]

I'm looking for a work experience placement for January 27th - February 4th.

I would be interested in going to a company that specialises  in web/app development or other types of media development. I want to go into this field when I'm older, so I want to see what it's  like. I study GCSE computing at school as well as BTEC media and I find these subjects interesting.

Please could you forward this email to other members of the the club to see if anyone knows someone would I could contact.

P.S the company needs an Employers Liability Insurance Number for me to do my work experience.
