I’ve
noticed that a few of you aren’t listed as “Valley Striders” for parkrun.
It’s simple to change. When your weekly email comes through there is a
link to “Edit your details”.

Race Report - Kirste 5
Memorial race (28/7/13) – from John Wallace
I was in
Essex visiting family last weekend which turned out to coincide with a race
only a couple of miles up the road put on by Benfleet Running Club, raising
funds for breast cancer relief in memory of a former member who passed away
from cancer. A decent size event as it turned out (brass band, tombola, huge
cake stall, etc) with over 100 in the junior race, and nearly 350 in the 5
miler which took us on an off road single lap route through fields and woods
before finishing at a local school. It was pretty hot and I was flagging a bit
on a long field stretch from 3-4 miles, but they very sensibly had put on a 2nd
drinks station (2 in a 5 mile race!) at 4 miles and then we dived back into the
woods where it was a lot cooler.
I was
quite pleased with my run, especially after I blew up at the handicap on
Tuesday, finishing 34th in 37.35, just behind a fellow
Strider, albeit from my birthplace of Leigh-on-sea. Really good event, lots of
marshals, and lots of obviously new runners as well as local running club
members, and lots of strange accents.
Not so
sure about the Essex Ladies motto though – ‘we go further’ – in these days of
TOWIE I’m sure that could be mis-interpreted!

“Gilchrist smashing vets
bests” – spotted by Sylvia Watson on p46 of last week’s Athletics Weekly

Headline
“Valley Strider chasing sub-hour 10km at 80 years of age”
It is not
just in the senior and younger veteran age groups in which new best times are
set.
Eighty-year
old Lou Gilchrist has twice set UK age-group marks for 5km and 10km this
year. The Valley Strider’s recent veteran road best times came in the
Rochdale 10km on July 2 (61:13) and in the Salford 5km on August 8
(28:21). These go with her four over-70 and five W75 British age-group
marks from 5km to half marathon.
Gilchrist

I have no more problems with injuries do that I can start to pick up a little”
