Otley Fell Race this week, the owner of the Maypole Fish and Chip shop on Cross
Green (the road the clubhouse for the race is on) has offered a free drink to
anyone buying food who also has a race number. I know we don’t need an excuse

Leggatt memorial 5k from Pool-in-Wharefdale – information from Mike
Crosfill.
·
Chris
was a member of Valley Striders for some years since its early days in the
early 1980’s and also organised the Pool fell race and Pool 10k race in the
1990’s. He died aged 65 of an abdominal aneurism (bursting of the aortic
artery) while refereeing a football match last September. His running
career was very extensive and top quality. He was a national junior champion in
his teens running for Sale Harriers and won many awards. When he moved over
from Cheshire to Yorkshire (Pool) he joined Bingley Harriers and then Valley
Striders when the club started. His PB for a marathon was 2 hours 25 and he
helped the founder members of Valley Striders (Stuart St John and others) to
grow it into a very strong and respected club.
·
The
race starts at 3pm, costs £5 to enter and proceeds go to “The Circulation
Foundation”. Start from behind Pool Village hall on Arthington Lane. The
race goes from the hall, over the river Wharfe bridge then loops though Castley
village and back to the hall (very flat course). The race is part of the
Pool Feast gala from 1pm to 5pm.
·
Mike
and Eileen Crosfill are doing the time keeping and please could you email Mike
at: [email protected] if you can assist with the finish funnel/marshalling or
general marshalling .
Tue 25
June - Yorkshire Vets Race at Alwoodley
·
This is the 5th year that we are organising the race,
and proceeds go to V S club funds and to Leos. We need 40 Striders to
help, starting 6:45pm. We only have 14 volunteers so far, please help if you
can! We also need people to help set out the route from 5pm. I’m
hoping we have “too many” marshals in which case older Striders will have the
option to run (but maybe these could help on course set-up). Please email
[email protected] if you
can help and/or want to run. Check http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsmarshals.htm for
names so far. See http://valleystriders.org.uk/Yorks_vets_2013.jpg for a
race route map.

Congratulation to
Holly Williams 1st lady – picture of her with the huge cup (or maybe
it’s a medium sized cup close to the camera) on our website and on
Facebook. Also congrats to Mick Loftus 1st M45, and Steve Webb
1st M50. Still waiting for complete results to appear.

Parkruns
Amanda Seims emailed
a couple of weeks ago “I came 1st lady in the Roundhay Parkrun
on the 18th May (I'm number 34). I have registered but didn't have access
to a printer so haven't been counted which is a shame as I didn't expect to
come first but it was a wet day and most striders were probably resting before
the CWR on Sunday hence no faster ladies turning up! I even wore my
Valley vest too.”
Results from 1 June
Holly and Tom were in
Manchester for a party on the Friday night and persuaded by their host to run
at the South Manchester parkrun at Platt Fields Park about a mile away.
Holly was 1st lady (12th overall) in 18:59 and Tom just
behind in 16th place in 19:18.
At Leeds Hyde Park,
Gwil was 1st in a PB 16:44.
At Roundhay, Rav
Panesar was 2nd in 19:25 and Julia Leventon 1st lady in
19:37.
At Falkirk …John
Shanks emailed:
“Sarah and I were in
Scotland at the weekend and decided to take on Falkirk Parkrun while we were
there. Anyone that has ever been to Falkirk will know that it isn’t the most
pleasant town in the world, and the locals tend to be as friendly as they look.
I’m not sure if the Grangemouth refinery has had this effect but there’s
certainly something in the water in my home district.
“In amongst all this
lies the hidden gem that is Callendar Park, a lovely and well maintained
natural area and a perfect setting for a morning run. The atmosphere is very
friendly and the organisers do a fine job. The course begins at the front of
Callendar House then it goes past the lake and takes one loop through the
woods, round the golf course, up a steep gravel hill and then past the lake
again to the finish. No lapping so you get a nice smooth run and the hills,
especially the one at 3k pose a tough challenge, on a par with or possibly
harder than Roundhay.
“There are some quick
runners that take part in this, mainly because of the absence of other Parkruns
in Central Scotland which is a shame really. In front of me were quick runners
at both ends of the scale; Fiona Matheson (VW50-55) finishing in 18:17 and
Andrew Fischbacher (JM14) 18:22.
“I’d recommend this
run to anyone passing through this area, even better if you like golf as
there’s a good pitch and putt course within the grounds too! Striders results 6
John Shanks 18:44, 61 Sarah Harper 23:47.”
We also had runners
at Cannon Hill (B’ham), Harrogate and Huddersfield.
Garmin heart rate monitor for sale
Amanda Seims [email protected] emailed
I have a new Garmin
FR60w ladies heart rate monitor watch which comes with the heart rate belt and
a USB stick for wirelessly downloading training data to a computer.
The basic functions it has are:
"In the gym or on the road, FR60 tracks all your workout data, including
time, heart rate, calories burned, lap times and averages and more. FR60 boasts
advanced training tools, such as training alarms and Virtual Partner®, which
lets you race against a virtual training partner to improve your
performance"
It's not a GPS watch although you can buy an optional foot pod to go with it
which will then track your speed, cadence and distance based on accelerometry
(not GPS).
I entered my details into it but don't think I ever got around to using it as I
have since borrowed a GPS watch from work and have been using that until I can
afford my own GPS watch.
Watch specs here (mine is also lilac):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-FR60-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B001S2RCX2
It's still in the box complete with instructions. I'd like £40.
