A good
turn-out for PECO XC 2 at Middleton saw 5 of our juniors take
part in the 1 and 2 mile races. 8 juniors took part in the Striders Winter
1 mile.
All results are now
on the website, click the tab at the top “For Club Members” and then the link
on the left hand side “Juniors”. Also in this section, thanks to Richard
Irvine) is an Excel file showing the current Grand Prix positions. If you
don’t have any points in the parkrun column but have run some parkruns, it is
probably because you aren’t registered as a Valley Strider on parkrun. To
amend this, when you get your weekly newsletter from parkrun, look for the link
to “update my details”. Also let us know so we can find your “old” races.

Monday
Nights at Leeds Met – from Amanda Seims
Hi, I've
mentioned this a few times and some people seemed keen to go… It's a 2
hour session Monday 6-8, first hour of physio type exercises led by someone
from the infamous Ali Rose clinic (think team GB etc). Second hour led by
Leeds Met athletics coaches Andy Hendersen and Mick Hill (coaches Jess
Ennis). So... a very high quality session and all for £4. Starts on
14th Jan and runs in term time. It does attract some top quality young
athletes but the likes of me also go and I was sore for a good week after the
first time but it's all good fun and the coaches are very supportive and
helpful if you've never been before. Need to get there early as it gets
very busy but basically just turn up and find a partner. Happy to meet
everyone in the reception area at Headingley Campus Sports centre if
needed? Think circuits with a bit of plyometrics, pilates, fast footwork
etc thrown in and some funky music. Each station is only 20 seconds so
it's not too bad really and you can always modify the exercise if you are
struggling.
Steve
Webb added “Sounds like the session Sara and I have been attending in Bradford,
except ours is less crowded and has no music. Good for improving core
strength, flexibility and balance; so definitely recommended for fell
runners. I like the idea that Mick Hill is available at
the Leeds circuits; I'm thinking of taking up javelin as I reckon I could
have a good chance against the Brownlees.”

I hope everyone is
ready!
If not, then just to
remind you that transfers are permitted “by completing the Sports Systems
Transfer Form, up to 1hr before the race. There will be a £5
administrative fee”, it says in the race booklet on http://www.yorkknavesmireharriers.co.uk/brassmonkey.htm. I couldn’t find a
transfer form on the website so I suggest you go to http://www.sportsystems.co.uk and use the “Contact
Us” feature. Let me know what they say.
I’ve already paired
up two gents and two ladies. I currently have a ladies number available
and a gent wanting number but transfers are only permitted between same
sex.
York Marathon – 20
October 2013 – press release emailed by Jon Parker
Keen runners from
the business community are being encouraged to sign up for the Plusnet
Yorkshire Marathon, a new race for the regional running calendar.
Thousands of runners are set to take part in the 26.2 mile event, which begins
from the centre of York and is taking place on October 20. The marathon -
said to be one of the flattest in the UK - is being staged by a new
organisation under the umbrella of Jane Tomlinson’s For All Events – which
already runs the successful Leeds, York, Hull and Pennine-Lancashire 10Km runs
and the Leeds half marathon.
The news comes a day
after it was announced that TheBusinessDesk.com is the official media partner of the Clarion Leeds 10k Corporate
Challenge, part of the Run For All series which includes the new
marathon. Sheffield-based phone and broadband provider, Plusnet, will be
the headline sponsors of the event, which is being launched today.
For All Events –
which comprises Run For All, Walk For All and Swim For All – was established by
the Tomlinson family as a legacy to the late Yorkshire fundraiser and
campaigner Jane Tomlinson CBE who raised almost £2m for charity by tackling a
series of incredible endurance challenges, despite being diagnosed with
terminal cancer.
As well as raising
funds for charity, the marathon is expected to generate significant amounts for
the Yorkshire economy. TV football pundit Chris Kamara is one of the
famous Yorkshire faces backing the event. He said: “I know Jane Tomlinson was a
massive inspiration to me and I’m sure she was to many, many other people. “I
hope thousands of people pull on their running shoes to take part in this, the
first Yorkshire Marathon. Good luck everyone, I know it will be a huge success
and bring in lots of money for deserving causes.”
For All Events’ Mike
Tomlinson said The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon would become a major highlight of
the UK’s sporting calendar and a flagship event for the organisation. It is
expected to raise up to £500,000 for charities in its first year. Mr Tomlinson
added: “We’re really excited about the new Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon. We
launched the Leeds 10K seven years ago now and we’ve been thinking for a long
time about putting on a long distance event in Yorkshire – and this is
it!"

Bob (me) says
I’m told that over
1000 people registered on the first day and entries are up to about 2000, so if
you want to enter, suggest you do so quickly. It “only” costs £40 (a bit
more than some marathons, but of course your transport and accommodation costs
will be much less) and you can get 50% of your fee back if you drop out 4
months before the race. By the way, I’m in!
Edale Skyline - from
Steve Dixon
Entries for this
race open on 31 January. this race filled up very
quickly this year and, as it is a counter in the English
championship in 2013, it's likely to fill even quicker.
The UK Backward Run
(Advertisement)
Why
not introduce a new running challenge for your club members in 2013. The
UK Backward Run is one of the toughest, most exhilarating and most humorous
races in the North West. Our current course record is 7 minutes 06
seconds, do your club members have the fitness and stamina to beat this?
This may initially sound silly, but recent studies have proven that adding
backward running to your training sessions will improve your attendees forward
running times as reported in the New York Times.
The 4th UK Backward Run will take place on Sunday 11 August 2013 at Heaton
Park, Manchester
Why
run backwards?
Find out more about the
male and female backward running races and obtain more information about the
benefits at www.reverserunning.com
We look forward to seeing you there.

International Triathlete – from Howard
Jeffrey
Happy
new year. I am still 2nd claim member of Striders as I enjoy being kept posted.
Not appeared in the results recently but did Chevin Chase and Jolly Holly Jogs
albeit don't really enjoy mud.
Posted
the following on the Otley site last week which goes to show if you see a
Strider (Mick Tinker) doing a Triathlon (Leeds Grammar July 2010) and think hey
I could do that!
Last
year I started to swim and bike to get stronger for running and avoid all the
niggles that come with regular racing.
I did a
few Triathlons and I have had to go through all the new niggles that come with
swimming and biking (I should have known!) and can add them to the still
present running ones. I have not yet become faster at running although I do
feel stronger.
What was
unexpected was I have qualified for Team GB in the Triathlon Age-Group European
Standard Distance Championships in Turkey next year. Just found out today as
was not notified earlier.
Don’t
ask me how I did it as there were some criteria – apart from ticking the box
and paying the registration fee, which I did at every opportunity – that I have
unbelievably satisfied.
Move
over Alistair and Jonny…!

Howard
Lineham
News January 2013
Happy New Year from
everyone at Lineham Farm
I would like to
welcome you to our first newsletter of 2013, we are all very excited about the
year ahead as we are celebrating our 20th year. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank everyone who has supported Lineham over the past 20 years
and we hope that you will join in and help us celebrate.
Lineham first opened
its doors in May 1993 and in that time thousands of children and young people
have stayed and visited the farm, they have come from schools, charities and
other organisations in the Leeds area. We couldn't have provided these visits
without the support of Leeds City Council and our very generous supporters.
To celebrate the
farm’s success we are holding a series of events, our annual Burns' Nicht is
taking place on the 18th January, followed by a new event, Leg It For Lineham
on Sunday 17th February. This is a 5km fun run around the grounds of the
farm and fun for all the family! We will keep you up to date on the other
exciting events taking place throughout the year.
If you would like to
hold an event to celebrate our 20th Anniversary please contact us and we can
provide you with a fundraising pack.
Best Wishes
Hannah Borkala
