Junior
Striders

the Striders banner at parkruns.
We’re
working on four projects to help these runners improve and encourage new
juniors to join.

Track sessions for juniors
Richard Irvine has been working on the
Junior Grand Prix – see below. We’ll have an announcement about Junior
Performance Certificates in the next V S Update. Andy Stoneman, having
just qualified as a Coaching Assistant (congratulations, Andy!) is looking at
equipment for junior training sessions. And Richard is corresponding with
a local school about using their track next spring/summer.
Junior
Grand Prix – from Richard Irvine
Purpose
The Grand Prix aims:
Races to be incorporated in the
Grand Prix
The number of events to be incorporated will
be approximately 14, from the following categories:
The season runs alongside the school year,
from 1 September through to 31 August of the following year.
The Junior GP sub-committee will attempt to
decide the majority of events in advance, but some may be marked as
provisional. These would mostly be based on popularity in previous years,
but consideration would also be given to new local events. Suggestions are
encouraged from club members for the inclusion of events not on the list.
Such suggestions may only be incorporated as long as good advance notification
is given.
Scoring
/ Prizes
We’re
still working on the scoring system but it has been decided that there will be
a winning boy and winning girl in each school year, also additional merit
awards.

Calling VS Juniors to the Peco Race - from Richard Irvine
As mentioned on Tuesday at Kathy's 6:00 p.m.
Beginners/ Improvers/ Juniors session, the PECO Cross Country League Race 2 at
Middleton Park takes place on Sunday 16th December.
There are 2 junior races, split into age
groups. The school year 4-6 old boys & girls race is approximately 1
mile and sets off at 10.00am. The school year 7-12 boys & girls
race is approximately 2 miles and sets off at 10.20 a.m. For keen mums and
dads, there is also a senior race at 11.00am, which is 5.5 miles!
These events are lots of fun and you'll
get great support from our senior club members. At the first PECO XC race
a couple of weeks ago we had 2 juniors both placed in the top 10 in their
races, Joe Sherman (4th) in the 1 mile and Alex Irvine (8th) in the 2 mile. It
would be fantastic to see more of our junior runners at Race 2
and this will count towards the newly formed VS Junior Grand Prix
(details above!)
The race is marshalled and will take place
entirely within the grounds of Middleton Park (located near John Charles Sports
Stadium off the A653 Dewsbury Road. The race HQ will be set up in the park
clearing identified by the arrow on the map below. Registration will be from
9.15am – 9.45am for juniors. See map:

Changing facilities are available to those
needing them at the Parnaby Tavern where food will also be available (after the
senior race) as part of your £1 entry fee!

Calderdale
Way Relay 2013 - from Sarah Smith
The Calderdale Way
Relay 2013 will be on Sunday 19 May.
Leeds half marathon
is 12 May 2013 according to northern running guide website.
River Moy half
marathon is 25 May 2013 according to the Run Ireland website.
That means we have no
competition from those for once!
I see no reason why
we can not get 4 teams together at least, including a ladies’ team.
Bradford City not
quite 10k – report from Joe Hanney
It was
the first running of the Bradford City run in its current 5k and 10k
format on Sunday. There were 5 of us from Valley Striders running the 10k
- Sue Sunderland, Hayley Nancolas, Andy Settle, Myra Jones and myself.
It was a
lovely crisp morning as we arrived in the impressive new City Park. I
didn't mind the undulating course round the university, although I think others
did. But a generally flat atmosphere, unenthusiastic marshalls and fairly
poor organisation meant it was a bit of a disappointing run
overall. It was a 2 lap race, but it soon became clear that the course
wasn't a full 10k. I heard reports of different measurements, but the
organisers now say the course we followed was only 8.8k due to a 'marshalling
error'. Myra wasn't happy with the quality of the mince pies either.
Hopefully
things will improve next year, although I don't think I'll ever beat 35.05
in a race described as a 10k again! Myra just lost out to the first woman
in a sprint finish, and Myra, Hayley & Sue won a team prize. So it wasn't
all bad.
The
results that were initially posted on the internet were confusing, but I think the
ones attached are a bit more accurate. Also everyone received an
apologetic e-mail from the race organisers.

It was
quite a long email from the race organiser, so I won’t print it all, but
basically it was an error by one of the marshals from ESS
their event stewarding company, not from one of the volunteer marshals.
Myra also
told me that the finish was quite exciting. It was a 2 lap race, and some
of the runners were still finishing the first lap / going out on their second
as the leading runners were finishing their second. Anyway, the two
routes crossed each other!
