Next Week’s Sessions
Almost a normal week,
the only oddity of the week is that it is the 5th week in the month
for Kathy’s Thursday group, so they’ll be meeting at Roundhay Park. See
website www.valleystriders.org.uk for details of all
sessions.
This Weekend’s Cross Country

Holly has emailed
about training for the Edinburgh Rock’n’Roll Half Marathon next April
Hi Ladies,
Mel asked a good
question last Friday - "what level do I need to be at by January?". I
have had a look at the info you all gave that evening (well, I've tried to
block some 'info' out!) and there is variation in the number of runs everyone
does which will make it disjointed when we kick off the training in the new
year.
So...I will be
setting plans based on everyone comfortably running at least 3 sessions per
week. This seems to be convenient for most - you all run tues & thurs and
those who don't yet run at the weekend, are able to. So for January everyone
needs to be used to running 3 times in a week, aiming for 4-5 miles
per session and definitely 5 miles at the weekend. Speed doesn't matter -
you won't all run at the same speed in the race - just the same distance.
We will base the
training round:
I have emailed all
above so find your training partner and get used to 3 sessions per week.
Is that clear? Have I
forgotten something obvious?!
Bob, I've cc'd you
in, in the hope you'll pop this on the weekly update to all members in case
anyone wants to join but haven't yet given me their email

Congratulations to
George Black for a very successful trip down from Fife to win his age category
George was the only
podium place but Striders did rather corner the market in coming 18th
in their age category, with Andy May, Tim Towler, Liz Wood, myself, Rachael
Nevins and Carole Towler all achieving this feat!

the Jane Tomlinson Run for All races next year
Pendle Hill Race Report – from Steve
Dixon
A few hardy souls
sporting Striders vests ventured over into Lancashire on Saturday 17 November
to run up and down Pendle Hill 6 times and get very very muddy in the process.
This race is the last in the calendar classed AL and is organised by Clayton-le-Moors
club. It has been described as both 'inspired' and 'contrived' depending upon
how you feel about running up and down this hill so many times. Many run it
once and never return!!!
The start was delayed
by 10 minutes to allow the race organiser Kieran to rid the remnants of cloud
off the hill. This was unexpected! I'd no idea race organisers had such magical
powers but I suppose that's down to the influence of the witches and wizards in
these parts. Whatever the reason was the cloud did stay off the hill for most
of the day and good visibility was the norm. Route finding should not, please
note, have been an issue!
Oliver Cheyne was the first to make it back to Barley. A good performance
considering this was his first longish race since Wasdale back in the Summer.
Not surprisingly he was tiring by the sixth ascent of the Hlll and almost
allowed yours truly to catch him, arriving back just 3 mins behind. I do owe an
apology here though as I suggested to Ollie that there were 5 Climbs, so it's
possible the 6th may have suprised him somewhat. Sorry! Another very solid
performance by Malcolm Coles (the 'runaway' record holder for the V70 category
for this race) to be the third strider home. Performance of the day was surely
that of Sarah Smith who knocked more than 20 minutes of her PB for this race.
With a proper warm up by cycling over to Barley, it's likely it would have been
more than 30 minutes!
Magic was still afoot
on Pendle Hill!!! It's victim, Geoff Webster, was unfortunately chasing
spectral shadows, after CP 4, climbing out of Ogden Clough the wrong way and
thereby missing checkpoints 5, 6, 7 and 8. He was thus able to surprise many
runners by meeting us running in the opposite direction along the top of Pendle
Hill whilst we headed towads the penultimate drop off the hill to CP9.
From CP 9 the route
is simple and pure in its line of travel, starting with the ascent back up to
the Beacon, amusingly called Big End. Not that many were laughing, in fact I
heard tales of grown men in tears in the effort of reaching CP 10 at the Big
End. This left over a mile (in the same SSW direction) of fast descending to CP
11 deep down in Ogden Clough above the upper and lower Ogden Reservoirs. This
check point was chosen as the spot to position a stone plaque in memory of fell
running legend Bill Smith who died on the nearby Bowland fells in October last
year. From here its either a joyful sprint along the track beside the
reservoirs back into Barley or a painful trudge and stagger before collapsing
over the finishing line.
We wearily made our
way back to the 'local' cafe for soup and coffee and Sylvia Watson was able to
relive some of her own history when we met a rival that she had done battle
with over the Haworth Hobble. Keighley and Craven archives did not go far
enough back to check who came out on top in those battles but a check of
Clayton archives revealed an amazing winning streak Sylvia has in the Pendle
race: first lady vet in 5 successive years from 1989 to 1993!!! Her
fastest time over that period was a fantastic 3 hours and 3 minutes. A resigned
rolling of the eyes signified Sylvia's disappointment with Geoff losing his way
on this course!
Not only a day of
Magic on the Fells but a day of Fell Running History.

Inspired or
contrived??? Need to run it again next year to make my mind up.
My apologies if I
have missed any other Striders running. We understood a new Strider was
intending to run but we did not manage to meet up on the day.
Apologies are in
order
Ross Bibby (still U/A in results) was far too quick for us all and finished in
156th place in 3 hours 16 mins and 55 seconds

Advert from Up and Running
Hi Club Runner
As the festive season approaches our thoughts turn to Christmas cake, mulled
wine and plenty of overindulgence - but for a lot of us,
it's a reminder that spring marathons are just around the corner - and training
is imminent.
At Up & Running, we have 3 for 2 on many items, and lots of ideas on our
Christmas list.
Why not pop in to your local store, pick up one of our Christmas Ideas lists
and leave it lying around at home - you never know you might just get what you
really want this year.
Happy Running and Happy Christmas

Advert from Amanda Seims
Selling a pair of
Adidas off-road/trail shoes I've worn once (12 mile run). Good cushioning (and
a pretty pink and black colour!) but I prefer the fit of my old shoes so am
going to buy those again and therefore need to sell these. Can bring them down
to Headingley Campus so you can try them on.
I've cleaned them up so they still look as new.
Size 6.5 UK. I bought from wiggle for £67.50.
Originally asking £60. Now reduced to £55.
I am a size 5-5.5 shoe normally but found this size just right for me.
Details here.
