Almost a normal week
next week!
·

Run Leeds beginners/improvers/juniors group meet Leos 6:00pm for training
session (new starters welcome!), followed by pie and peas (see below)
·
Grace's
intermediates group (48-60 mins for 10k, 18yrs+) meet Leos 7:00pm for session

Pie and peas –
Tuesday 20 November
We are putting on
“pie and peas” for Kathy’s Group at 7:10pm on Tuesday 20 November. (you
can come even if not running the session at 6pm!) Temporary defectors
from Grace’s group are also welcome.
Book at [email protected] by Sunday 18
November 10pm saying whether you would like meat pie or vegetarian bake, mushy
peas or baked beans, and also whether you would like apple pie and ice cream.
Note that both of the
“pies” are made by Tony at Leos. The meat pie is minced beef, covered with
mashed potato and topped with pastry. The vegetarian bake will definitely
contain small potatoes and will be topped with cheese, but what else is in the
pie will be Tony’s surprise - in the past we’ve had sliced sweet peppers,
mushrooms, carrots, green beans, tomatoes…
Main course is £2.50,
dessert £1.50.

Registering with Run
England
If are in Kathy’s
beginners/improvers group or you have come through Kathy’s group in the last 18
months, we are keen that you sign up with Run England.
There is an
organisation in England to encourage people to run www.runengland.org . There is a
project in Leeds to get a lot of new people in to running, see www.runleeds.org. “Run Leeds @
Alwoodley” (Kathy’s Group) is one of the 30 or so running groups in Leeds that
are part of this project.
Holly and myself are
two of the committee members on the Leeds project. We are keen to get as
many runners as possible registered with Run England. People “new to
running” will count towards our target, but just increasing the numbers of runners
registered with Run England will improve the chances of Leeds getting more
funding next year – funding that can be spent on coaching courses for leaders.
We would like you to
register with Run England. It’s not the easiest website, here are some
tips
·
Go
to www.runengland.org . Click on
“Join Run England” (on the left hand side) or “Join For Free” on the right
(they both go to the same place)
·
Then,
halfway down, click where it says “Click HERE to join Run England”.
You’ll get a form to fill in.
·
Please
fill in your email address (but later on there are questions whether you want
to receive news information and whether you want to give feedback – so you have
the opportunity not to be on any mailing list)
·
Please
answer the questions “Are you new to running” and “On how many days have you
done a total of 30 minutes or more of physical activity” as you would have
answered when you joined the group (NB if you joined in 2011, answer as though
it was February 2012)
·
Please
fill in the group name as “Run Leeds @ Alwoodley” and the club name as “Valley
Striders – Road & Endurance” (NB as soon as you start typing these, you
will be offered you a list)
·
If
you have any problems, just email me!
·
Email
me if you’ve successfully signed up! Thanks!
Entry details for
Baildon Boundary Way
From
Baildon Runners
We are
pleased to advise you that entries for the 19th Baildon Boundary Way (a
multi-terrain half marathon) that takes place on Sunday, 7 April 2013 will open
at 9:00am on Monday, 26 November 2012 at:
http://events.runbritain.com/events/event/baildon-boundary-way-3/2013-04-07/.
Please
note that no postal entries will be available for runners.
Please
note we can only cater for 480 runners on race day but this mailshot is being
sent to over 6,000 email addresses in our database! So if you want to run
in 2013, you need to apply early. Online entries for runners for the 2012
event closed just 17 days after entries opened so do be warned!
The event
also incorporates a non-competitive walk but please note that the online entry
system is for runners only. Entries for the walk will be by post
only and will not open until after the online capacity for runners has been
reached.
At that
time we will place an entry form for walkers on our website, www.baildonrunners.tk.
Entries for the walk will have no restriction on numbers.
Special
note for club runners: In order to enter online, you will need to quote
your URN. This is your unique runners number which
is allocated to all runners who are affiliated to England Athletics. If
you do not know it, we suggest you ask your club secretary for the information now.
If you are unable to enter your URN you will have to pay the higher
unaffiliated runner fee and will not be eligible to count in the team
competition. However, if after entering you later find your URN or join a
running club, do let us know and we will amend your entry. However, we
will not be able to refund the difference in the entry fee and will treat the
excess as a charitable donation.
From Bob
– your URN is at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm .
This is a VSGP 2013 race.
Fell Championships –
from Steve Webb
Results for Shepherd's Skyline and Wadsworth Half Trog now
included. I think this probably leaves the Tour of Pendle this
Saturday as the last chance to add points from the "Any Other A Long"
category.
Good turn out at the Half Trog in excellent weather
but very sloppy underfoot conditions. Appropriately for Remembrance
Sunday the new course included a section of incised footpath that was
reminiscent of a trench on the Somme. Malcolm was first V70 and Julia had
an excellent run for second lady. A race too far for me this weekend
after WYXC on Saturday (not that it appeared to be a problem for Julia).
Last Tuesday’s track
training
Those of you
overtaken on your track speed session by a race walker should click on http://www.london2012.com/athlete/rew-quentin-1125281/ His time for
the 50km walk at the London Olympics equates to 3:18 for a marathon (NB but
even if you can run 3:18 for a marathon, could you run a further 7.8km at the
same speed?!)
After deciding on
some changes to the track session 3 months ago, we have now settled on doing
some sessions based on 5 minutes. Options are
·
400
metres in say 1:15 with 3:45 rest (or say in 1:35 with 3:25 rest)
·
800
metres in say 2:40 with 2:20 rest (or say in 3:10 with 1:50 rest)
·
1000
metres in say 3:30 with 200 metres jog recovery back 1:30 to the start line
(Gwil’s session)
If you’ve not done a
track session recently, come back on 11 December and try it!
Research Project
My name is James
Watkins and I am an undergraduate student studying Sports and Exercise Science
at Leeds Metropolitan University. I am recruiting participants to take part in
a research project looking at carbohydrate metabolism during running at
simulated altitude. I am looking for male runners/ triathletes aged 18-44 years
old. The study is based in Leeds and would require 5 visits to the labs (one
maximal oxygen uptake test and familiarisation session and then 4 experimental
trials). All the tests will be carried out at a simulated altitude of 2500m.
This is a great opportunity to get involved in some interesting research where
you will get a free maximal oxygen uptake test done and can get information
about your energy use during running (at simulated altitude). If you are
interested in participating, or know somebody that might be, please get in
touch for some more information.

Product Research
From Lauren
Caveney: I work for a research company in Leeds called Brainbox Research
(www.brainboxresearch.com ) and we are
currently doing some research into endurance athletes’ thoughts about sports
supplements. We are holding focus groups in the Roundhay area of Leeds in about
a weeks’ time to hear from male and female endurance athletes. The group will
be an informal discussion lasting about 90 minutes about use of supplements and
consideration of a new product that will be on the market soon. We are also
offering participants £40 as a thank you for their time.
I still have some
details to confirm regarding the time of the group (it will be in the evening)
but if you are interested please contact me.
