Apologies for the lateness of this week’s Valley Striders Weekly Update

Training this coming week

NB double check on the website in case of any change!

Tue 28 Aug - Kathy's Run Leeds beginners/improvers/juniors group meet Leos 6:00pm for training session (new starters welcome!).

Tue 28 Aug - Holly's Run Leeds improvers group meet Bodington Hall sports pavilion 7:00pm – directions as follows, from Ring Road, go on Otley Road towards Otley, just before end of dual carriageway turn right into Bodington Hall grounds, go downhill till you get to one way system.  The one way system is anticlockwise. The sports pavilion is on your right so you just need to go 50 yards on the one way system and turn right again to the pavilion.

Tue 28 Aug - Valley Striders meet Leos 7:00pm for Hill session at Eccup Res.

Thu 30 Aug - meet Scott Hall 6:45pm for steady 7 miles at 8 to 9 minute mile pace (with stops).

Thu 30 Aug - Kathy's Thursday group. 5th run of the month.  Mystery run.  Not a mystery any longer.  Meet 6:40pm at parking place junction Wike Lane/A61 opposite large iron gates into Harewood estate   http://www.kenkaiser.co.uk/thursday/

Next week - Tue 4 Sep – note that ALL FOUR sessions (Kathy, Holly, club and fell) will start at 7pm because there will be food served from 8:15pm.

Numbers at the track session have been dropping off recently, perhaps due to holidays, perhaps due to the price, perhaps due to other commitments, perhaps due to the reps we are doing.  If you have any comments including suggestions for improving the sessions, please email Gwil [email protected] .

West Yorkshire Cross Country League

We now have dates and entry details

·         Saturday 20 October at Wetherby

·         Saturday 20 November at Yeadon

·         24 or 25 November

·         Saturday 8 December at Wakefield

Races are 9 to 10km for men, 5 to 6 km for women, various distances for juniors, minimum age 9 on 19 October 2012.  Junior races in 2 year age groups start from 11:45a.m., Women’s race at 1:30pm, men’s at 2:15pm if I remember correctly.

It is quite a high standard and if you are a man running over 45 mins for 10k road or a woman running over 52 mins for 10k road you will be at the thin section of the race towards the back.  If you are running those sort of times (or slower) I suggest you’ll enjoy the 5 races in the Peco league (November to March) much better.

Race entries needed by Tuesday 2 October to [email protected] cost is £10 and that is the total cost for all 4 races.  NB it is £10 however many races you enter/run – you keep your race number for the series.  Entry fee for juniors (under 17) is £5.

Leeds Country Way

Team lists at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsteams.htm .  A few more reserves would be welcome, please email [email protected] .

Lots of recce runs have been organised, I’m not sure how many, I do know that there have been over 120 emails to organise recces (leg 4 leads the way with 29 emails).

Tuesday/Wednesday next week we will be publishing estimated start times for each pair for each leg.  You are recommended to meet up at the end of your leg 1 hour before your start time, allow 30 mins to drive to the start, and 30 mins to get ready.  Your leg captain will have your race numbers.  Please bring 4 pins and your VS vest.  NB If you’ve not got a VS vest please contact your leg captain.

Harewood Trail Races – Sunday 28 October

Help required for these races please – 2 mile at 10:00, 5 & 10 mile at 10:35.  We need about 80 volunteers for all aspects of race support.

Please note that Striders are only allowed to run if they can provide someone to marshal in their place.

Please email [email protected] if you can help.  Let us know your preferred location.  So far 3 people have emailed me (thanks) but we need 76 more.

If you have juniors running then we can find an place for you to marshal on the juniors route.

Also help needed handing out entry forms at various races in late September and October, especially the junior races at Wetherby and Kirkstall.  Please email [email protected] .  If you can’t help on the day, maybe you can help with entry forms!

Thanks

Results

Christchurch NZ Half Marathon

James Forbes has been travelling the world and occasionally running races.  In the Christchurch Airport Half Marathon (re-routed from the city centre because of the earthquake) he set a new PB.

1101 James Forbes      2:05:50  (chip time 2:03:09)

1680 finishers

He said he was sure he’d spotted a girl in the 10k race wearing a Valley Striders vest so I did some detective work and found…

Christchurch NZ 10k

  318 Catherine Shields   55:51  (chip time 54:44)

 1021 finishers

Catherine is John Batchelor’s niece / Eddy Robinson’s cousin who came to visit the UK for 3 months last winter and trained several times with the Striders.  We’re pleased to see she still wears the club colours.  John tells me she is now on a 3 year rowing scholarship at Ohio State University in the USA.

Borrowdale Fell Race

John Marsham reports a sunny day in the Lakes:

1 LIGHTFOOT Ricky   M  2:49:20  Ellenborough Athletic Club

  148 MARSHAM John      M  4:18:14

  205 MAYER Andreas     M  4:34:36

  240 VOGLER Justin    V40 4:46:59

  242 SEIMS Amanda      F  4:48:22  (fem 29)

  303 DIXON Stephen    V55 5:09:34

This is an “A” “Long” so qualifies for V S Fell Championship points, just waiting for Steve Webb to get his computer warmed up!

Parkrun Results

Two days ago Richard Balshaw won at Roundhay in 18:10.  Katie Parry, who used to run with Striders but transferred to Leeds City as she was primarily a track runner, was 1st W at Hyde Park in 17:42.

Last week there was a famous Striders name on the winners’ list at Roundhay, it was Steve’s son Paul O’Callaghan who runs for Tadworth AC in Surrey.  His time was 17:10.

Burnsall Classic Fell Race

No Striders in this race, but in the Burnsall 10 earlier in the afternoon, Paul Kaiser finished 5th in 1:00:31
