Hayton Heller – race report – from Tom Button

A holiday's not really a holiday without a race so I decided to do the Haytor Heller on Dartmoor whilst away a couple of weeks ago.  It's an off-road 6 mile course with about 1100 feet of climbing: basically 4 steep uphills and 4 steep downhills.  I looked up a couple of times and the views were fantastic (you could see the sea) but this was a bit dangerous given the footing.  The highlight was the narrow downhill path through head-high ferns with a few conveniently placed boulders to hurdle.  As this was my first race as a vet (and given my non-running injury forced 3 months off earlier this year) I was fairly happy with my time.  I was also first Strider!  I was last Strider too.  The race is highly recommended if you find yourself down that way this time next year.
