Subject: V S Update - More marshals needed for Vets race, Band night
cancelled, Dates and Results
A shorter
V S Update than usual, I have a new mission to send a thinner edition each week
rather than War and Peace every 3 weeks.
More marshals needed for
Vets race
We are
still well short of marshals for next Tuesday night. We could festoon the
whole of Adel woods with red and white tape, in fact I’ve just bought 4km of
the stuff, but this is not the Valley Striders style, we want to be around the
route to encourage the runners and to take action if any injuries. Ken
and Kathy have been recceing in the woods and, after the heavy rain, the course
will prove “interesting”.
So if you
can spare 2½ hours next Tuesday from 6:45pm to 8:45pm* , please email [email protected] to let
us know you’re available. The arrangement is simply to meet in front of
the club house at 6:45pm. Then the marshals will be split into 2 groups,
one to do the East and North of Leos, the other to do the West and South.
If there are too many marshals (just a possibility) then some of you may be
able to run the race so bring your fell/trail shoes just in case.
* NB 8:45
allows 1hr 15min for the last person to finish. If you need to be away
earlier, e.g. 8:15pm ask to be placed on the Stairfoot Lane section which is
early on the 2 lap course, as soon as the last runner has passed, you can go.
PS if
you’ve already emailed to volunteer, apologies that our auto-answer message is
still set to Harewood Trail, and don’t worry, we have your name!
Band Night Cancelled
Sorry,
the band night has been cancelled due to insufficient numbers, despite Dan’s
many attempts to cajole you to come. We may try to rearrange later in the
year, possibly as a joint social with the rugby and cricket sections, your
opinions welcome to [email protected]
Dates
Tue 26 June – Yorkshire Vets Race at Leos starting at 7:30pm – approx. 5
miles round the woods near Leos, There will be a 6pm Kathy’s group (all

Sun 2 Sep – advanced notice of date for Leeds Country Way - last year we
had 5 teams of 12 runners, keep this date free! This is a 60 mile route,
run in pairs, so each pair runs 10 miles. It uses country footpaths and
it is strongly advised that you do at least one recce run a week or so before
the race so you know the route. When we pick the teams, the first 12 to
sign up are guaranteed a place - Anne, Kim and Sarah from Kathy’s group have
already done so.
Hooded Tops
– reminder from Dan Murray
(NB I’ve asked Dan to
delay placing the order till next Wednesday and for him to “model” one of the
tops on Tuesday!)
We are about to place
an order with our branded clothing supplier for some more black hooded tops.
These are as many of you will have seen people wearing around the club which
have ‘Valley Striders Leeds’ on the back in large print and the same on the
front on the left chest but smaller and embroidered. The cost is £21 per top
and the choice of sizes is S / M / L / XL. If you’re unsure about size, please
ask someone who is wearing one to see if they would mind you trying it assuming
they look about your size. We will be placing the order on Wednesday 27th
June so can all orders be made by emailing [email protected] by no later than
Tuesday 26th June stating your name and size.
Cheers, Dan

This is a tough
course with two long steep hills, so Simon did well to get under the hour.
As can be seen on the
VS Facebook site, fish and chips were enjoyed afterwards, reminding me of http://www.toughofthetrack.net/Alf_chips.JPG or more at http://www.toughofthetrack.net/index2.htm
V S Grand Prix points
now updated on the website
Chevin Fell Race – from Steve Webb
These now
included in the Fell Champs table: not so many points available this year as
the race has changed category from A to B. Quite right too; there is too
high a proportion of road for it to ever be deserving of A status.
However it still remains a very steep climb and an equally steep descent to
test both the lungs and the knees.
Tom Adams
of Ilkley was a clear winner to continue his recent good form. I was
first Vet 50 in 10th overall and Justin and Greg also managed to conquer
the Chevin on behalf of Valley Striders.
More results and reports – always wanted!
