Subject: V S Update - wedding plans, mobrun, 8 May training, LHM,
results (3 peaks, Manchester, VS junior race, handicap)
Ladies
and Gentlemen of Valley Striders, could I have your attention please for an
announcement from Mr Paul Kaiser:
Following the London Marathon,
Sharon and I indulged in a few days rest 'n' recuperation in Tenerife. I
finally managed to pluck up the courage - much tougher than the marathon - to
pop THE question. Much to my relief and enormous pleasure Sharon said yes (and
she didn't even hesitate!) and we are now both very happy and excited and very
much looking forward to getting married hopefully sometime next year. Possibly
after the London Marathon, but with enough of a gap between so that Sharon
isn't hobbling down the aisle, and the first dance isn't reduced to a shuffle!
Parkrun Mobrun – Saturday
5 May
Just to
remind you that this Saturday the Hyde Park parkrun (soon to be renamed
Woodhouse Moor parkrun) is the venue for the annual club mob run. Which
club will have most runners finishing? Hopefully it will be Valley
Striders (after being second last year).
If you’ve
not registered, then do so at www.parkrun.com and then
just turn up on Saturday morning for a 09:00 start. NB beware the parking
restrictions around the Moor.
Please
could all Striders wear their club vests! I will bring about 5 spare V S
vests, if anyone else coming has a spare vest could they bring it along.
Training – Tuesday 8 May
Just to
remind you, we have 3 sessions on Tuesday
·
Kathy’s 6pm group – beginners, improvers and juniors
·
Kathy’s 7pm group – improvers & intermediates (sub 35 min for
5k)
·
Track session, meet 7pm in the foyer of the Indoor Sports Centre
at Leeds Met (sub 50 min for 10k)
·
NB also Jack Bloor Fell Race (in VS Fell Championship)
Leeds Half Marathon –
Sunday 13 May
Thank you
to those who’ve volunteered to marshal, I think we now have enough, but one or
two more won’t be turned away.
Instead
of our usual location between Sheepscar and Meanwood, we have 6 marshals on the
Stonegate Road / King Lane roundabout – this is great because this is one of
the regular spectator spots for Striders – and 4 at Kirkstall Fire Station just
before the final uphill section starts.
So if
you’re just coming along to cheer, these will be two pretty good places to
be. And if you’re really cunning (park near David Lloyd) you can get from
one to the other to see your favoured runners at both places.
Drills Session – Wednesday
23 May

the information and recommendations!
London Marathon
Well, the
ballot opened and closed on the Monday, so if you forgot to sign in you can now
only get in via a charity place or good-for-age.
But why
go 200 miles for a marathon when you can go 40. The Manchester marathon
will be on again next year, and surely the weather can’t be as bad as this
year’s was.
Results
Three Peaks – from Steve Webb
It was an
extremely windy day which made for slower times than in recent years but
we had an excellent turnout of Striders. By the narrowest of margins we
lost Graham Ford (Ribblehead) and Sarah Smith (Hill Inn) to the
dreaded cut-off but the rest of us managed to battle round. Very
impressive effort from Mick Wrench who seems to save himself all year for this
race and the OMM.

There are a few
pictures and many comments on the Valley Striders facebook page
Ian Sanderson
commented “We need to get some VS branded bin-bags for wet races”
Joel said “I could
have done with a VS branded mobility scooter for the last 5 miles”
Alan emailed, “I ran 3 hr 41min 41sec for my first marathon. Great course
and support but seriously let down by lack of organisation by the race
organisers, especially the bag drop off point which took me 3 hours of
rummaging through hundreds of bags to eventually find mine “
Junior 1 mile and Club Handicap
In our second ever
junior 1 mile race, the winners were Nathan Brady and Eleanor Ford. Both
of them easily beat last time’s course records.

Congratulations to
Grace Thomas who won the Spring Handicap (though it felt like winter, standing
by the res.)
Judging from the
results, if you want to get a good place in the Club Handicap, you need to be
training in Kathy’s group – perhaps Kathy should be on commission!
At least 10, maybe 15
were newcomers to the Handicap, in fact two had not yet joined Striders and two
more had only joined Striders 2 weeks ago. One of the newcomers was Gary
Shaw who was second fastest and did really well as he was last to start,
alongside Dave Penman who overtook 41 runners and was fastest on the
night. Third fastest was new V50 Steve Webb, who bought us birthday all
drinks back at Leos – thanks, Steve!
Thanks to Mike &
Eileen for timekeeping, Pat, Joyce and Tosh for various finish line duties, and
Ken, Kathy, John and Peter for marshalling

All the Grand Prix
points for Three Peaks (any other marathon), Manchester (any other marathon)
and Spring Handicap are now on the website.
Please treat the
“total” column with caution – when runners have run more than 8 races I need to
exclude their worst performances, but also I need to take into account that
runners need to score in at least 5 of the 6 categories. The new Excel
system doesn’t yet cater for this – development in progress.
Next Grand Prix races
– Leeds half (May 13), Sheffield Half Marathon (May 27), Apperley Bridge Canter
(May 31), Wharfedale Half Marathon (June 2).
Note that if you are
interested in the Leeds Race Series, the next races are Post Hill 5k (May 30)
and ABC (May 31). See www.leedsathletics.net for details.
