Half, Fell Running meeting, Food on 28 Feb
Dates / Events
Sunday
19 February – Peco Race 4 at Golden Acre. Strong men’s and women’s teams needed to maintain
our places – 1st and 2nd respectively. Junior races
8-10 years 1 mile at 10a.m., 11-16 years 2 mile at 10:20a.m. www.pecoxc.co.uk for details,
registration at Arthington Lane car park, but if
you’re not early, park in Otley Road car park and
walk across. In the previous race at Templenewsam,
we had 37 runners, beating our record 35 at the “National” in 2010. So if
you’re coming for your first ever XC this weekend, you can be sure that you
won’t be far from a fellow Strider. NB if it is your first XC, wear
whatever shoes have the most tread – don’t wear your old shoes that are likely
to have little grip!
Saturday 25 February
– just Steve and Sara at the Nationals, but in 2013 it will be back oop North so hopefully we’ll have
30 or more runners then
Tuesday 28 February –
an extra pie and peas night, no special occasion,
please order by Sunday 26 Feb 10pm see website for details
Sunday 4 March –
Dewsbury 10k rearranged date, and you can still enter even if you didn’t enter
for the original date
Sunday 4 March – 2nd
race in Yorks vets league see www.yvaa.org for details.
1pm at Otley so you’ll easily get from Dewsbury to Otley if you want to run both, in fact, you marathon
runners could probably get an extra 6 miles in between!
Sunday 11 March –
final Peco race at Otley
Chevin – Striders to provide 6 marshals please
And a little bit
further off…
Saturday 14 April –
Meanwood Valley Trail
Entries are coming in
steadily, but its 3 years since we last filled the race so any promotional
support you can give would be most welcome, e.g. handing out forms at the end
of races, putting forms in sports shops and sports centres, encouraging friends
and relations to run (NB also 1 mile race for 7-10 years and 2 mile race for 11-16 years)
Sunday 15 May –
Calderdale Way Relay
We have entered 2
teams (A) and (B) – the B team will be filled on first come first served basis
Message from Sarah
Smith - 2 teams= 24 runners needed for the 6 stages! It will be a
super day. If you are interested, please check the Halifax Harriers' web
site for details and if you would like to join the A team or the B team
please email me. ([email protected])
Sunday 15 May – Leeds
Half Marathon
My inside information
a week ago was that 3,300 of the 5,000 places had been taken and that entries
were arriving at 75 per day, so by my calculation it will fill within the next
2 weeks.
Run Leader course on
17 March
If you’re interested
in helping us with our groups or starting one or more independent groups on
your own (for the latter, click http://www.leedsathletics.net/runyh.htm for details), you’ll
need to go on a Run Leader’s course (click http://www.runengland.org/page.asp?section=38§ionTitle=Leadership+in+Running+Fitness+course for details).
Please email Holly [email protected] if you are
interested. Yes that is our Holly and she’s got a smart email address as
she is co-ordinating applications from all clubs!
Run England
registration
This message is for V
S members who have joined the club via our Tuesday 6pm Run Leeds @ Alwoodley group, and also anyone who has paid £10 for a 3
month series at the group.
We would very much
like you to register on the Run England website www.runengland.org, click on the fourth
tab “Join Run England” then scroll down past the video and then see “Click HERE
to join Run England” (they make it hard, don’t they!) and box 20 should
be “Run Leeds @ Alwoodley”.
Valley Striders get
£5 back for everyone who registers, so this will enable us to train more
leaders (see previous item). NB if any of you would like to train
as a run leader, please put your name forward to Holly.

Stanbury Splash – from John Marsham
Stanbury Splash was (like the brass monkey I imagine) kind of
windy. Times way down on last year ... Not a fell champs, but quite a few
striders motivated by the prospect of a free malt loaf (although some not
motivated enough to hold off the beers the night before I think!)

Performance Database
Now that Paul Hunter
has left for the orange of Wetherby, I’m looking for someone else to collate
the race results and input to the performance spreadsheet
which we use to work out the Performance certificates.
It takes less than 10
minutes per week and need not be done on a Monday. If you can spare the
time please email me!
Fell Running Meeting
(7 Feb) – from Simon Vallance
·
Fell
training – planning to have a monthly fell/off road running session on the
first Tuesday of every month to coincide with Pie and Peas. We will meet
at Leos as normal; allcomers welcome. I will
draft a training schedule for review and comment and put it up on the
forum. Key areas will be ascending and descending, running on rough
terrain and navigation and will be in a variety of locations within running
distance of Leos, and maybe a bit further afield in summer.
·
Calderdale
Way Relay – Sarah plans to enter two teams and invite participants. We
need at least 26 people to volunteer – 12 per team plus a reserve takes place
on 13th may More info here http://www.halifaxharriers.co.uk/races/calderdale-way-relay.html
·
Lyke Wake – if sufficient interest we may enter a team 42
miles of fun – teams of 6, must be a least one member of the opposite sex
7th July 2012 more info here http://www.southkilvington.freeserve.co.uk/page5.html
·
People
of a fell persuasion will be meeting for a social beer or two at East of
Arcadia on the second Wednesday of every month. http://www.markettowntaverns.co.uk/east-of-arcadia.asp?Tavern=East-of-Arcadia&Section=Main
·
LIRF
– we are looking for volunteers to lead the fell running sessions. There
is an Off Road version of the LiRF qualification
which according to the UKA “Once qualified, you'll will have the skills and
insurance needed to deliver fun and safe sessions to groups of runners with
different abilities, including new runners and those who already run but want
to progress.” The nearest course is on the 28th April in Mytholmroyd,
Kendal on the 20th May and Church Stretton on the
30th June. Cost is £90, Leeds network will pay £30, Striders will pay
£30, and £30 to be paid for by volunteer For more info on the basic
qualification http://www.runengland.org/page.asp?section=38§ionTitle=Leadership+in+Running+Fitness
·
A
few ideas for other events include the Magnificent 7 on 26th Feb,
Isle Jura Saturday 26 May and many more – watch the forum for ideas and
details. We may also liaise with Mr Towler to offer some Sunday morning
off-road and fell runs meeting at Smithy Mills at the same time as everyone
else
·
And
finally, the fell running section of the club will shortly be having its own
section of the web site. It will include training schedule once agreed
and fell championship details all in one handy place...
Thursday training –
new assembly point – from John Wallace
Owing to the increasing numbers attending the Thursday sessions, it has
been agreed with Scott Hall Sports Centre that our meeting point (in bad
weather) should be in the upstairs bar at the Centre rather than the downstairs
reception area, which has been getting a little congested.
In good weather we will continue to meet just outside (but not directly
in front of the doors!).
Food feedback – from
Mr Food
Generally positive
feedback from the curry, one person thought the portions too small and another
said that it wasn't hot enough (we think he meant in temperature and not spice)
many others said that they very much enjoyed the curry.
There were
suggestions that there might be samosas or bhajis
(but would be a bit of a faff for Tony and not worth all the effort) whereas
half a naan with each meal would be good and perhaps
one or two pickles at the serving hatch.
Speaking to Tony,
because the goat curry is expensive to buy, he couldn’t add extras without
putting the price up, but could do an alternative e.g. chicken with naan bread or onion bhajis.
Many people are in
favour of a second meal at Leos each month hence the next pie and peas on 28
February (when we can also discuss the curry menu options), but if numbers drop
off we’ll go back to one a month.
And Finally
See you Sunday!
Bob
