Subject: V S Update - AGM and subs, Events including WYXC/Peco/VSGP/VSFC, Results, London marathon rejections, Messages from Paul Holloway and Dick Dale

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING & MEMBERSHIP SUBS

This year’s AGM will be on Monday 1 November at 8:30pm at Leos.  Pie and peas will be available, book at [email protected] saying whether you want the carnivore or vegetarian option.  In order to speed the proceedings, there will not be apple pie, but bring your own desserts if you want.

Paul White and myself have done some calculations and are proposing that the membership rate from 1 September 2011 to 31 August 2012 remains at £20 for first-claim members.  This does need to be formally ratified at the AGM, however 72 Striders have already paid the £20, so we’d prefer not to change it.  If you want to pay now, please send a cheque, payable to “Valley Striders”, to Paul White, 17 Whinmoor Court, Redhall, Leeds, LS14 1NX.

As I said, 72 have already paid, including 20 “Run Leeds @ Alwoodley” (Tuesday 6pm) runners who have “upgraded” to full Club membership.  If you want to check your membership status, go to the website www.valleystriders.org.uk, click on “For Club Members” at the top and then click on “Membership List” on the left hand side.

As for how we spend your £20, then £5 goes to England Athletics for your competition licence, £7.50 goes to Leos, and the other £7.50 is “ours” – Paul will tell you at the AGM what we did with it last year.

NB If you are entered for the West Yorkshire Cross Country, you could send the £8 at the same time.

BORROWDALE FELL RACE

Amanda Seims emailed

Funny enough I came across this video of the race and I'm in it from about 1:10.  I wasn't aware that the guy behind me was taking video of the Scafell descent so that's pretty good to watch

LONDON MARATHON

The marathon magazines touched down a week or so ago.  Were you lucky enough to be accepted?

If you got a rejection slip then you will have another chance to get a place.  Valley Striders will receive 3 or 4 places to allocate to club members.  Priority will be given to

·         Those who joined Valley Striders prior to 1 January 2011

·         Those who applied to London and received a rejection slip

·         Those who have not had a club place before.

If you qualify in at least one of these categories, email [email protected]  (NB please let us know whether or not you have had a rejection slip)

Another way of getting into London is via a charity place.  So far, one charity has contacted me

Health Poverty Action

Hi there,

I work for an international health and development charity called Health Poverty Action. We are currently looking for 25 keen runners to take our charity places in the 2012 London Marathon and I was wondering if any of your members might be interested in applying.

All money raised in sponsorship will go towards providing basic but life-saving healthcare and education for the world’s poorest people.

We will provide all of the fundraising ideas and support needed to smash the sponsorship target of £1800 and will also provide:

·         A fundraising pack, including sponsorship forms and fundraising tips

·         A running vest

·         A cheering squad on the day

·         A post race reception including a massage

If any of your members are interested in running for Health Poverty Action either with their own place or a Health Poverty Action charity place, please get in touch.

Best wishes

Messages from Paul Holloway – (a) new Strider and (b) support Margaret Ehrenberg in her “Run for Colin”

I hope you are well, and that today's race was a success in the warm conditions.

I've two bits of news to share with you, that might be of interest to other Striders.

Firstly, I have news of a new Strider.  Edith Holloway was born on Friday 9th September at Birmingham Womens Hospital, weighing 6lb 9oz.  She, and her mother, are both doing great.  Dad isn't doing too bad either!

Also, Striders might want to support a friend of mine who is embarking on a 6 day, 180 mile off-road running challenge to raise money for charity in memory of Colin Morath of Abbey Runners who died in August.

Margaret Ehrenberg is my sports massage therapist here in Birmingham.  She lives locally, but began her running career 27 years ago up in Leeds when she ran with Abbey.  She rates her biggest achievement as her 3:08 finish at the London Marathon in 1989, when still with Abbey.  She also won a bronze medal winner for her age group at the same distance at the World Masters Championships in Finland in 2009, and was 1st lady in the Country to Capital Ultra, 45 miles off road, last year.

Colin Morath was Margaret's inspiration in her early running days.  They did an awful lot of running together, which continued after Margaret moved away from Leeds.  Colin died in August after being ill for two years or so.  To raise funds in his memory, she has devised a challenge which she hopes is worthy of their mutual love of off-road running, and the sort of challenge which he, himself, might easily have come up with.

Margaret will be taking 6 days to run the 180 miles from Birmingham to Leeds, beginning on Monday 14th November and arriving in Leeds on Saturday 19th November.  Her route, which you can find on her blog, is mainly off-road.  She's planning to run the Abbey Dash the following day, which - as I'm sure many Striders will know - was founded by Colin, and was race-directed by him for the majority of its 27 years.

She is raising funds for two charities - Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire, and St Gemma’s Hospice.  Both these charities helped Colin and his family during his illness.  If you'd like to support Margaret in her goal of raising at least £10 per mile for the two charities, please visit http://www.justgiving.com/teams/runningbacktoleeds.  Margaret is also keeping a blog of her preparation and motivation for the run, which is at http://runningbacktoleedsforcolin.wordpress.com/.

Best wishes,

Paul  [email protected]

Message from Dick Dale

Hi again Bob we are in Spain living here now. After my accident I went back to work but it was difficult with pain in my leg most days. Some time ago we decided we wanted to retire to Spain and here we are. Once we reached 60 we both received pensions. Sue took redundancy from the library, a friend of wanted to buy our bungalow to rent out so it all worked out very well. Still wish I was out running with you guys but that is not possible now, but I am at the right side of the daisies so I have to be happy with that, I do go out on my bike most days and we have had a pool built so I swim every day, came out here on 31st May and only rained twice, much the same as with you I suppose. Harry and Jenny coming out in Feb so I will get all the gossip off them so you had better be good, I had 10 good years with Striders a time I will never forget, and I still have my vest and always will. Please give my regards to all at the club and it would be good to keep on touch if you have the time.  Bye for now Sue and Dick  [email protected]
