This weekend

Saturday 9 July – Baildon Carnival Canter

This race has recently been added to the Fell Championships.  A good chance for fell runners to sneak some points while the road runners take it easy before the Eccup 10.  On the other hand, the road runners could use it as a warmup (make a change from parkrun!).

Steve Webb says this is a 3.5 mile off-road race in conjunction with Baildon Carnival.  The race starts at 2:15pm and climbs over Baildon Moor to the trig point on Hope Hill with a good "let’s go for it" descent to the finish. There will also be a 1 mile fun run at 3:15pm for the kids (though open to all ages) on the edge of the Moor.  It is a category B race (i.e. quite hilly) with no nasty climbs or descents.

For more details see  www.baildonrunners.tk

Sunday 10 July – Eccup 10

This is a V S Grand Prix race.  Entries are being accepted on the day.  The race starts at 09:30.

I’m looking for an assistant to hand out Harewood Trail entry forms – I’ve just got 2,500 forms printed – we’ve 2 entries so far – so some publicity is needed.  The race starts at 9:30, so if you can be there from 10:20 to 11:40 that will catch nearly all of the runners.  Please email if you can help.

If no-one volunteers then could Striders as they finish please do a 5 or 10 minute shift handing out forms.

As there is a lot in common between the 2 races (same distance & share part of route), many of the competitors in the Eccup 10 are likely to be interested in our race.

Also Sunday – put in your lasagne order for Tuesday before 10pm – order the carnivore or vegetarian option and whether you want apple pie.

Tuesday 12 July – Club Handicap

The Summer handicap trail route is 5.2 miles from the Reservoir, via Eccup village to Emmerdale and back across the dam.  Meet in front of the Lodge by the Res at 7pm prompt.

As we nearly lost a couple of runners on the last handicap, we need 7 marshals to keep everyone on route.  We have 3 so far (thanks John, Graham & Sarah).  Please email me if you’re able to help.

Run Leeds @ Alwoodley

Our beginners and improvers group, “Run Leeds @ Alwoodley” resumed for season two on Tuesday 5 July with 14 newcomers and a similar number of returning members.

New “members” are still welcome.  If you have friends that are occasional runners and want to improve or friends that are healthy and want to take up running, ask them to contact [email protected] for details or check our website www.valleystriders.org.uk/ril.htm   No necessity to join Valley Striders.

And current Valley Striders members are also welcome to join this group.  Every Tuesday 6pm at Leos.

I’m pleased to announce that 5 RLA members have “converted” to full Valley Striders membership - Emma Johnson, Hannah Stoneman, Kerry Jackson, Laura Goodson and Liz Reddington.

Wednesday 27 July – Golden Acre Park Relay

Make up your own teams of 3 for this event.  Register on the night at the back car park of Golden Acre (Arthington Road).  7pm start.  Each team member runs one lap of about 2.75 miles.  See www.abbeyrunners.co.uk for more details.

Sunday 4 September – Leeds Country Way Relay

60 runners needed.  The first 24 to put their names forward are guaranteed a run.  We have 29 so far, but some of these are already selected for the mens, womens or vets teams, so we still have some first come first served places available.  Email [email protected] if you’d like to run.

Wharfedale Triple T at Kettlewell – report from Steve Webb

Fantastic weekend of racing at Kettlewell.  I was the only Strider to run all three races; Sara just ran the uphill road race on Friday night.

The A Medium event on Saturday race was in the VS Fell Championship.  Summary results

  1 Andrew Jebb, Bingley 1.31.31

  5 Steve Webb           1.35.45

 29 John Marsham         1.52.20

 41 Martin Oddy          1.58.19

 56 Steve Dixon          2.05.55

 63 Malcolm Coles        2.08.44

 84 Dave Jones           2.30.03

This race showed how useful it is to have the basic orienteering skill of setting a compass bearing and then following it.  From control 4 I took the trouble to run on a bearing for control 5 - summit of Great Whernside.  The leaders including Andy Peace and Tim Midgeley of Bingley and Sam Wadsworth of Wharfedale went off too far left.  Andrew Jebb followed my line and to my great amusement we got to the trig point in first and second, having saved several minutes.  He was able to hold off the others on the descent for a good win; I wasn't.

The Fell Championship points spreadsheet has been updated on the website, but of course will change again this weekend.

Run for All Winner

Congratulations to Bernadette Clayton.  Not only was she 1st W50, she also took the title of fastest corporate female (representing Leeds Chamber of Commerce).  Her time was 44 minutes and 40 seconds.

Liz Wood – Sports Massage

Just a reminder to Striders that I'm qualified in sports massage therapy.  For anyone who's not tried sports massage before, here are just some of the ways it will help your running:

- faster recovery from injury, hard training sessions & races

- reduced stiffness, pain and fatigue

- improvement in tissue condition, flexibility and range of movement

Why not try one out & feel the benefits for yourself.  Lots of Striders have already done so and have found them beneficial.

I'm based in North East Leeds.  Prices are £25 for 45 mins and £30 for 60 mins.  For more information and to book in, contact Liz on 07866 480368 or at [email protected].
