EVENT DETAILS

Parkrun Mob Run – Saturday 14 May – message from Fraser Weir (Leeds parkrun)

Leeds parkrun is hosting its 2nd Mob Run event on Saturday 14th May and we would like to invite all members from your running club to take part.

As you will probably know parkrun is a free weekly 5km time-trial that takes place every Saturday at 9am. The event is for everyone of all ages from beginners through to more experienced athletes and we encourage participation throughout a large community.

Last year we started up our ‘Mob Run’ event where we looked to increase our engagement with running clubs within the Leeds Network. The event was a great success with 333 runners taking part and so this year we want to build on this and we hosting another event on the 14th May.

The ‘Mob Run’ event is the same as the normal 5km run, where runners complete the course, register at the finish and then have their time posted online. However each club will be competing against each other to have the lowest average time amongst all of their team runners and the largest team taking  part.

There is no limit to how many runners you can have in a team, the more the better! All we ask is that the runners register online and print off their personal barcode and wear their club vest so we can identify which club they are from.

Pecolympics, Barbecue and Peco Cross Country Presentations – Sunday 22 May

Please note that you need to book tickets [email protected] by Tuesday 17 May at the latest.

The PECO Cross Country League presentations will take place at Leo’s on Sunday 22nd May. The provisional timetable is as follows:

  • 3.00pm – 5.00pm: The Pecolympics (Leo’s 2011 – bigger and better than London 2012!). Lots of silly (and less silly) events, including a junior xc race, egg throwing & catching, tug of war, etc.
  • 5.30pm: BBQ (£6.00 per head for adults, £3.00 for under 16s; tickets must be bought in advance)
  • 6.30pm: League presentations in the bar at Leo’s (the bar will be open!)

Bradford Millennium Way Relay – Sunday 12 June

We now have 25 names so we either need 5 more for 3 teams or we’ll go for 2 teams and have 5 disappointed Striders.   We do need to enter and plan teams now so if anyone else wants to run, then email   [email protected] by Tuesday 17 May at the latest.

This is a 50 mile relay for teams of 10 i.e. 5 legs run in pairs.  It’s like the terrain for the Calderdale Way Relay but a little bit easier and much nicer because it’s in summer.  Or like the most scenic bits of the Leeds Country Way Relay with some “easy” fell running and no housing estates.

And it’s nowhere near Bradford – the route is Bingley – Haworth – Laycock – Silsden – Ilkley – Bingley.

Between 2002 and 2005 we won the mixed team prize every year, and in 2006 we won the vets team.  Maybe we can win the mixed or vets team again or alternatively challenge for the men’s or women’s team prizes.  More details on our website http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsrelays.htm#BMW

Education for Coaching

England Athletics and Leeds Clubs are planning to arrange 4 or 5 evening coaching seminars during the summer months.  At least one of these is likely to be at Leos!

These are not specifically for qualified coaches.  But the intention is that club members going on these courses should pass the information on to other club members (could be a couple of paragraphs in a V S Update or just a chat on a Tuesday evening after a club session)

The list of “courses” on offer can be found at http://www.leedsathletics.net/Development%20of%20Coaches%20-%20Courses%20available.doc .  Take a look!

Please email me if you are interested in these.  They are likely to cost £5 or £10.

Sorry, if you wonder why no dates are mentioned, this is because they haven’t been set up yet.  The courses to be held will depend on the indicated demand, i.e. the more that are interested in one course, the more likely it is to be held.

Message from Paul Moseley

I am writing to thank you for your support at this year’s event, which I hope you will agree was extremely successful!

We have already received a number of positive letters and emails from runners, spectators and residents on route and have seen many positive comments on running web sites. Many runners have commented on the quality of marshals and drinks stations as well as the support and encouragement they received from the volunteers.  You really do make the whole day possible and we hope you found it a rewarding and enjoyable experience!

A donation has been made, on behalf of all individual volunteers, to the event’s official charity, Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Once again I would like to thank you for your support. If you have any comments or suggestions regarding the event, please feel free to contact me as feedback is always welcome.

Many Thanks

Paul Moseley

Calderdale Way Relay – from Steve Webb

Thanks to everyone who ran after the usual flurry of last minute injuries.  All CWR runners now need to pay £5 to Paul White.  After the event was postponed due to deep snow and ice in December the blazing moorland at Ovenden threatened to turn it into a trial by fire.  We got the baton to Malcolm and Mark on leg 5 and almost avoided the leg 6 mass start.  Thanks to Mick and Paul, Sara and Sarah who teamed up with Abbey Runners in a composite Abbey Valley team.

Hopefully there will be a second CWR run this year at the normal time of December.

Udo’s Oils Trial

Message from Andy King at Leeds Met:

We are running a commercial research study in the Carnegie research institute and need a few male runners to take part. As part of the study you will receive a VO2 max test and lactate profile test which is a fantastic tool to aid your training and gauge your fitness. We are testing a nutritional supplement called Udo’s choice blend oil http://www.udoschoice.co.uk/ which has received a lot of anecdotal evidence form endurance athletes in their general wellbeing and recovery after runs.

We will be running the study at the university and can cover some travel expenses if necessary.

If you think you might be interested or have any friends/relatives who you think would be then please do not hesitate to get in touch and more information can be provided.
