Subject: V S Updated Update - Grand Prix (Abbey Dash and one race to go)

Update and corrections

6 Striders added to the Abbey Dash results list means that a total of 55 first claim Striders ran.  (Amongst those I missed were a Smith and a Jones!)

Also a couple of corrections to individual times, the midnight hour had bewitched my fingers.

I’ve now added gun position and gun time.

  • If your chip position is a smaller number than your gun position (e.g. Roy), it suggests you started a little (or a lot) too far back in the pens (and are likely to have been blocked or weaving at the start because of slower runners around you)
  • If your gun position is a smaller number than your chip position (e.g. Chloe), it suggests you started a little (or a lot) too far forward in the pens (and may have had to set off too fast because of the speed of runners around you)
  • My experience is that you’ll achieve your optimum time by being a little (but not a lot) far forward in the pens, I’d be interested in your comments.  NB if you’re chasing an age category prize, always start a little too forward as these are awarded on gun time not chip time.

Also I got an email from George Black querying the M70 that beat him.  We’ve found him on the “power of 10” website http://www.thepowerof10.info/ with a date of birth 1957 and I’ve now written to the race organisers suspecting that his date of birth has been transcribed incorrectly (a “3” for a “5”).  So we may well have a M70 winner in our numbers.

Paul White has emailed – there are now less that 100 members owing for 2010/11.  You can check whether you’ve paid as www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm

GRAND PRIX

West Yorks XC

Clearly many Striders were saving themselves for the Abbey Dash, and it was the same for other clubs too, for example in the men’s race there were only 139 finishers vs 170 in the previous race.

Abbey Dash 10k

Unhelpfully the results did not show club but I’ve trawled through the first 2000 finishers and found 49 first-claim Striders and a few friends too.  If I’ve missed you, please let me know.

I was also helped by Ken Kaiser who has uploaded 39 photos http://www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsalbum/10abbdash/index.html

“There are several people I don’t know, but if they had a Striders vest on they got snapped. Apologies to those I missed (Leroy-too busy talking-Not me-Leroy). George Black is in there and so is Mike Midgley.”

Some great results for the Striders, Rob running the fastest time by a Strider in the last 4 years.  Simon and Kevin have both recently had long-term injuries but look back in form now.

What a great debut 10k by Eddy!  Next year he will be 17 and will be able to participate in the 6 stage relays as a key member of the Striders squad!

4 more Striders ran sub-6’s and 32 Striders in total ran sub-7’s, and I’m sure plenty of PB’s all the way.

George Black’s time wasn’t a PB nor was sub-7’s, but he was our only Strider in the prizes, finishing second M70.  He says this is his last race, but maybe he’ll change his mind.

A special mention for Paul Holloway who travelled up from Birmingham for the race and knocked 10 minutes off his PB and also nearly broke his 5k PB twice!  He will be at Thirsk next week for his 8th GP race.

NB these will be updated on the website late Tuesday night.

We now go to Thirsk next Sunday for the final race of the 2010 Grand Prix.  24 Striders have entered so far.  Entries are still available on-line at £14 (no extra cost), or on the day (up to 10:30).  Nb last year they ran out of chips so very late comers could not run.

Grand Prix Status

153 Striders have competed in at least one race!

Some of the prizes are still up for grabs

Men – Gwil Thomas has 800 and Dan Fisher 799.  Dan has declared himself unfit with a virus – could this be a bluff?

Women – Liz Wood is a clear winner

Men vets – Steve Webb is a clear winner

Men vets (over 50) – Eric Green has a one point lead from Alistair Smyth

Women vets – Liz Wood leads, Sue Sunderland or Sara Dyer will be runner-up

Group B – Dan Murray is a clear winner

Group C – Alistair Smyth is a clear winner

Group D – Chloe Hudson leads but will be overtaken by Malcolm Coles if he runs at Thirsk (NB he’s not run any road races this year)

Group E – Sara Dyer is a clear winner

I’m sure you’ll let me know if any of the above assessments are incorrect!

GP T-shirts for 8 races – 28 have qualified but a further 10 Striders have run 7 races so can qualify if they run Thirsk.  Paul White will be contacting you for your chest size.

Chloe has been following the Men’s Championship on the Forum and her latest post reads

Dear Readers, Competitors and other members of Valley Striders,

Sensing defeat Dan Fisher didn't even make it to the starting line at the Abbey Dash. One has to wonder if there is foul play involved - Gwil is SO keen to win the coveted prize! One wonders why - yellow isn't even a good colour for red heads and I should know!!

Given that Gwil is now going to romp home can I move matters on to more important ponderables. I would like to enquire as to the identity of two new Valley Striders members. One is called Mr. Brass and the other Mr. Xmas. (I expect he is actually more commonly known as Santa). Bob has invited us all to email them and so I duly did. I enquired of Mr. Brass whether he liked a good rub and buff. From Mr. Xmas I wanted to know if he was going to be at the Christmas party and allow members to sit on his knee in return for a gift.

I am yet to receive a reply to either enquiry.

So puzzle solvers of Valley Striders! Who are these two? And whilst you all have your thinking caps on who is Shetland Pony who has now added him/herself to this forum?

Think on!!!

P.S. I am putting my mind to a competition/sweep stake for next year's Grand Prix. Perhaps Panos will re-enter the race as a dark stallion? Or, in an analogy of the fable concerning the tortoise and the hare Shetland Pony will grab the prize. Or.....will Gwil win for another year. (Yawn.)
