Please book by emailing  [email protected] You will receive an auto-reply stating how to make payment.  Payment must be made by Tuesday 14 December.

West Yorks Cross Country – Saturday 20 November

A few weeks ago I said this race would be at Bramley Falls Woods.  I was wrong!

It’s at Bramley Park, Broad Lane, Bramley and the Race HQ is at Bramley Baths (I think changing is available, certainly there will be portaloos there).  If you need more information, see the West Yorkshire XC website http://www.westyorkshireathletics.org.uk

Grand Prix 2011 meeting – Tuesday 30 November

We’ll be holding a meeting to decide which races are in the 2011 Grand Prix on Tuesday 30 November, 8:45pm at Leos.

If you would like your favourite race to be included, come along.  Or if you can’t be there, email Alan Hutchinson [email protected] and let him know.

Calderdale Way – Sunday 12 December

Good news, we’ve got our 3 teams.  Risky news, we’re short of reserves.  If you’re available on 12 December, please email [email protected]

For those who did put their names down, you’ll find out which team you are in (or whether you are a reserve) before the end of the week.

Brass Monkey

Did you get in?  If so, please email [email protected] and we’ll see how many will be there on 23 January.

London Marathon

We have FOUR club entries for the London Marathon.  There will be a ballot which will be drawn on Friday 17 December.  If you want a chance of a place, go to our website www.valleystriders.org.uk/vslondon.htm for more details.

Membership Subs

If you haven’t yet renewed your subs, you’re now in the MINORITY.  As at yesterday 145 members had paid for 2010/11 and 116 hadn’t.  If you’re one of those who haven’t, please send a cheque for £20, payable to “Valley Striders” to Paul White, 17 Whinmoor Court, Redhall, Leeds, LS14 1NX.  You can check whether you’ve paid at http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsmemreg.htm

Leo’s Committee

We are looking for a Strider to represent V S on the Leo’s club committee.  They meet monthly, usually on the third Thursday in the month and the meetings last about an hour.  You don’t need to be a V S committee member, just to be able to keep the rest of the committee up-to-date.  Don’t worry if you can only attend half of the meetings, someone on the V S committee will sub for you.  Please reply to this email if you’re interested.  The next meeting is on Thursday 9 December and Paul White and/or myself will be going too.

By the way, Tracey’s picture (first Brtish woman at London marathon 2004) has been found and is now in the trophy cabinet in Leos meeting room!

V S Fell Championship (from Steve Webb)

Results of the final nominated race in the league are now in, the Shepherds Skyline at Stoodley Pike.

Six VS runners were led home by Holly who was third lady in the race.

The league is updated as attached and with that result Holly leaps into the lead in the Ladies' Champs ahead of Xanthe and Sara, with Myra completing a second fell race to move 4th.

No change at the top of the Mens' Champs with none of the leading trio of Steve, Eirik and Ian being in action.

Bob says “The last qualifying race was the Tour of Pendle from Barley Village Hall last Saturday, but Steve and Holly had such commanding leads that they were unlikely to be overtaken”

Race Report from Holly

It was a fab day for a run out - vest and t-shirt weather. Even John Marsham who apparently didn’t run but was definitely at the end and brought a friend (new prospective runner Bob?!), turned out for his first fell race despite knee problems.

Results (as shown on the Tod website):

Holly Williams      104th   56.53

Tom Burton (!)      143rd   60.00   (again, new strider for Bob!)

Keith Brewster      160th   61.47

Myra Jones          186th   63.58

Stephen Dixon       207th   66.40

Geoff Webster       246th   70.56

Fab effort by all Sriders over a very rocky and muddy course  (maybe not so much for Geoff, who did not get out of breath or sweat at any stage of the course, which included 1150ft of ascent).

Special big up to Myra, who looked more than a tad nervous but whooped ass.

More importantly there was a strong representation of Striders at the pub afterwards.

Well done!!!

Holly

Peco XC at Pontefract

Results (showing G P points)

Women

    9 Laura Clark             91

   18 Carole Schofield        86

   37 Sarah Smith             81

Despite incurring a 140 point penalty for being one runner short, the team finished third (in the second division).  We stand a good chance of winning the league this year (and being promoted to the first division) if we put our best team out for the remaining races.

Men

    8 Gwil Thomas            100

   13 Joel Giddings           99

   16 Dan Murray              98

   17 Roy Huggins             96

   29 Jeremy Ladyman          95

   35 Alan Brydon             94

   67 John Batchelor          93

   94 Malcolm Coles           90

  101 Bob Jackson             89

  109 John Wallace            88

  120 Tony Haygarth           85

  125 Graham Ford             84

  128 John Shanks             83

  140 Bob Wilkes              80

The team finished third, 11 points behind Abbey who were 1 point ahead of Horsforth.  We stand a good chance of winning the league this year if we put our best team out for the remaining races.

Next race Sunday 19 December at South Leeds Stadium (John Charles Centre).

V S Grand Prix “Any Other Marathon

Two recent results - Dublin

Snowdonia - Sara Dyer 4:34:14

Dublin - Michael Grant 3:18:36

Grand Prix points have been updated

There are just 3 Grand Prix races left – Saturday WYXC at Bramley, Sunday Abbey Dash and next Sunday Thirsk 10.

Gwil now has 800 points and cannot be beaten but Dan Fisher has 799.  Stop press, has Dan been nobbled?  Dan has just emailed “I’ve managed to catch a nasty virus so you might not see too much of me on a Tuesday night for the next few weeks.  I'm thinking that the rest of this year is going to be a write off with regards to races, although I'm probably going to do a mixture of walking and running at the Abbey Dash this week with my Brother in Law so if you see my name on the results list down in the 1000s that will be why.”  Bob writes I’m sure there will be much discussion on the Forum!

Jedburgh Half Marathon (from Goerge Black)

Winning time:-  1:12:19

My time :-      1:37:43.

Position :-     143 of 521 finishers.

First over 60 and also prize for oldest  competitor (70) which I passed on to a club mate.

Conditions were absolutely ideal for distance running. Course had a hilly first few miles, flat and fast until 10 miles then a pretty tough section. for a mile.

As this was my first 1/2 marathon since 1994 and the longest run I have done in 5 years I was a bit apprehensive and felt myself slowing about the 8 mile mark. I wore VERY light racing flats and my legs/feet were pretty sore at the finish. I had also gained 12lbs since my duathlon in September (beer chocolate and chips) and as my friend Max always reminded me the cost is 2 seconds per lb per mile. Looks like another unpleasant 3 weeks to get the weight off before the Abbey Dash.

Baildon Boundary Way

Baildon Runners wish to announce that online entries at www.runbritain.com/onlineentry will open at 10:00am on Wednesday, 17 November 2010 for the 17th Baildon Boundary Way (a multi-terrain half marathon) that will take place on Sunday, 10 April 2011.

Research Request

Hi,

I am PhD student at Leeds Metropolitan University and am currently carrying out research in substrate during exercise at altitude. I am looking for runners who would like to take part in a study which would involve approximately 2 hours running in an environmental chamber on 4 occasions (a different altitude each occasion). By taking part in the study I can provide the runners with a full fitness test and they can have the results for their own use. I was wondering whether you know anyone that may like to take part? If you would like further information please get in touch and I can give you more details.

Thank you for your help

Nicola added

  • It is 90 minutes continuous running at 60-70% VO2max, immediately followed by a time- trial (so no longer than 2 hours of total running time)
  • I am looking for participants 18- 40 years old

Advert for food after Abbey Dash (not official Striders meet)

Hi,

I run with the Ilkley Harriers and also own Granvilles Food Company. It is a food store at 2A Park Square East (at the finish line of the race, cnr Headrow and Park Square East).

I am opening the store on the day for the Harriers and thought I’d extend the invitation to the other clubs as well, seeing that there won’t be many stores open on the day.

We are known for our pork & leek sausage / thick cut smoked bacon butties, delicious soups and flavoursome pies.

I have put together a special deal for the clubs (mention your club name) - Gatorade + Sausage/Bacon Buttie = £2.99

All the best in the race!

Advert for music on Abbey Dash day (from Tony Haygarth)

My band, "The Review" will be playing in "The Streets of Leeds" on Street Lane between 6 and 8  pm on Sun. 21st Nov. It’s in aid of St. Gemma's, so it’s an opportunity to support a good cause without being cold, wet and knackered! We play a variety of tunes ranging from Elvis to The Killers.

Thanks,

Tony.
