Peco XC Race 1 – Sunday 7 November

The Peco league is a league of about 15 clubs, mainly from the Leeds area, but a few are further away. There are 5 races in the series and at the end of the series there are prizes for teams and individuals in age group bands.  There is also a prize for everyone who runs all 5 races.

Each race is 4 to 5 miles, mainly off-road but not usually too challenging terrain.  Pay on the day!

The first race in the series is hosted by Ackworth Road Runners but will be at Pontefract Park which is just off M62 junction 32 so easily accessible from Leeds.

There are usually 20 to 25 Striders running each race, come and run on Sunday (even if you’ve never run XC before)

NB The final race is to be hosted jointly by Valley Striders and Airecentre Pacers on the Danefield Estate on Otley Chevin in March!

Here are the race details from www.pecoxc.co.uk website (there is a map on the website)

Latest position in fell champs is attached (now on website).  This includes the results from Withens Skyline race.  Excellent effort from Malcolm who was first M70 and set a new M70 record in doing so.

Holly is now hot on the heels of Xanthe but is in the last chance saloon as she has to run the final race in the Fell Championship, the Shepherds Skyline on 6 November.

Denver Marathon (from Karen Barlow)

Hi Bob,

Just a quick message to let you know I won the Denver Rock n Roll Marathon on Sunday. The race was at altitude (one mile high) and was held on a beautiful crisp sunny clear day in Colorado. I ran 2.54.

Thanks for including me in the VS Updates.

Best Regards,

Karen Barlow

From Pam Lomoro

Thanks for the update and infor. As you may have noticed, I have not been to training for a while. Finished my studies at Leeds and have now moved down to London temporarily before relocating to Sudan later this year (BTW, that's where my dad is from and I spent a year working there in 2008 - It is very hot, had to get my run completed by 7 am to avoid ridiculous heat).

I just wanted to say what a fantastic club the striders are. I have had a great time training and socialising with you guys. You may not know but you have been an inspiration and a great stress buster during a very stressful period of my studies - and my life. You helped me to put the fun back into my running and aim for greater things without getting overly obsessed with PBs, and they came naturally - those PBs. Indeed, I ran a full marathon (Amsterdam) for the first time in my life despite having been a competitive runner for over 12yrs. And despite only managing a twice a week training schedule in the last 6 weeks prior to the marathon, I managed to run a 3.40 chip time, thanks to the support of fellow striders.

I don't want to say bye because you can be sure to see me again even though not often. I plan to start a running club in Juba, South Sudan where I will be relocating to, and already I have secured the support of the ministry of Youth and Sports there. I will be coming to you for advice on this, and who knows, maybe some striders can come and run the very first Juba 10K next year (Providing the political situation in Sudan proceeds without trouble).

I wish you all well and let's all remember to keep the fun in running. I will probably pop into training one of these days and hope to see some of you at Abbey Dash - BTW I owe you ££ for the LCW and that LCW Ladies Trophy is probably mine.

On the Forum from Mat Taylor

Just thought I'd mention that last night I bumped into Sir Jimmy Savile OBE, KCSG, DJ in my local Co-Op, on Street Lane.

He seemed a bit disappointed that they had run out of milk, stating:  "It's like being in a war zone. You've no milk. I remember during the war there wasn't any milk. We'd run out of cows."

(I can only presume that we used to drop them out of aeroplanes whenever we'd used up all our bombs.)

Anyway, I just thought that you'd all like to know.

Bob says “Mat, are you quite sure it wasn’t Geoff that you saw?”
