Subject: V S Update - Training This Tuesday, Harewood Marshals, Events, Calderdale Way, Yorks Road Relays results

This was supposed to be a full V S Update, but it has been a busy weekend for me, so some items are carried forward to the next edition

This Tuesday (21 September) – training from Harewood

Meet Harewood Village Hall at 6:45pm PROMPT

Travelling by car, take A61 towards Harrogate, go through the lights at Harewood, then take the first left (just after the bus stop), the Village Hall is 200 metres on the right.  Please park tidily as there is another event on at the Hall that night.

Travelling by bus, it’s the number 36 bus from Leeds Bus Station.  The destination is Harrogate or Ripon, ask for Harewood.  It takes half an hour, probably a bit longer in rush hour.  After leaving the built up area of Leeds, the bus will go through countryside for about 3 miles before reaching Harewood traffic lights.  The bus stop is immediately after the lights.  Walk another 20 metres in the same direction and then turn first left into Church Lane.  Harewood Village Hall is 200 metres on the right

After running one mile together, we’ll split into 2 groups, 8 miles for faster runners (7-8 minute mile pace), 5 miles for slower (9-10 minute mile pace), NB this session is not suitable if your road running pace is slower than 10 minute miling.

Harewood Marshals (3 October)

We still need about 15 marshals, but if we get more then some Striders will be able to run the race.

If you’ve already put your name down, thank you, and if you have a preference for where you’d like to marshal, let me know, also if you’d like to run (if we have sufficient marshals), let me know.

I’d like to have all marshalling positions allocated by this Friday and get a full list issued next weekend, so if you’ve not yet volunteered but are available, please please email back by Friday.  Thanks!

Other events

It’s the Horsforth 10k this coming Sunday.  Is anyone available to hand out Harewood Entry Forms at this race?

The West Yorks XC League starts on 10 October.  41 Striders are entered.  If you’ve not entered, you’re too late for the first race but let us know [email protected] if you want to be entered for the rest of the series (second race on Saturday 30 October).  NB the first race is a V S Grand Prix race.

The next VS Fell Championship race is the Withins Skyline on Sunday 24 October.  This race is (in my opinion) suitable for less experienced off-road runners.

Also on Saturday 30 October is the first Leeds Parkrun Handicap Relay (teams of 3, each runs 1 lap).  More info in next V S Update (or just look at www.parkrun.com )

On Sunday 31 October is the Cancer Research 10k at Harewood.  Abbey Runners and ourselves each provide 12 marshals for this event.  Let me know if you can help!

Winter Training

Striders winter training regime officially starts on Tuesday 5 October.  For Tuesdays, first and third Tuesdays meet at Leos, session at High Ashes.  Second Tuesday is track at Carnegie.  Fourth Tuesday meet at Leos, session at Church Lane Meanwood.  Thursday is still from Scott Hall but different routes.

NB wearing a reflective bib or top is MANDATORY for Striders winter sessions, you will not be able to run with us if not appropriately attired!

NB Tuesday 5 October is lasagne night – email to [email protected]

Calderdale Way Relay (message from Steve Webb)

Volunteers needed to represent Valley Striders in the Calderdale Way Relay.  The general format is like the Leeds Country Way, a circular 50 mile route run as 6 legs with a pair of runners on each leg.  But Calderdale is bigger (usually about 100 teams) and is a bit tougher, with some useful hills and muddy bits and some excellent views.

The race is on Sunday 12 December and starts/finishes at Stainland near Halifax.  Geoff has entered 3 VS teams so we are looking for 36 runners plus a few reserves.  Please let me know ASAP if you can commit to running the CWR.  At the moment we can be flexible on the team categories open/ladies/mixed/vets but once we know who is interested we will confirm the categories, allocate runners to teams and let you get on with recceing the routes.

V S Fell Championship (also from Steve)

Website updated with results of Yorkshireman Full plus the outings by Steve Dixon at Borrowdale and Malcolm at Sedbergh.  Ian Sanderson has completed his 5; so has Xanthe who now leads the Ladies.
