Results of “Run 100k for Max”

Max had a 1.9 mile (3km) lap from his house that he used for most of his training runs. If he wanted to run a tempo run 10k, he ran 3 laps; for 10 miles he ran 5 laps; I believe he even occasionally ran 10 laps for 20 miles.

Valley Striders ran 21 laps in the morning and 48 in the evening, a total of 130 miles or 210km, which just beat the 191km that Max ran to set his M70 world record for 24 hours at East Hull Stadium

A further 54 laps were run by Max’s family in Leeds, Abbey Runners (including Valley 2nd claimer Dave Gillian who ran 13 and a bit to complete a full marathon) and some Valley Striders running earlier in the week.  And a further 8 lap equivalents were run by Max’s family in Oregon and New Jersey.  So in total we achieved over double Max’s 24 hour record.

Many people, Striders and others, have sent tributes which I have posted on the Valley Striders website  www.valleystriders.og.uk/maxjones.htm

Max’s daughter Sue, emailed me a message from the Jones family:

“Thank you so much to everyone for such wonderful messages, stories and thoughts about our marvellous father. We really appreciate all your tributes to him and we are very proud that he inspired so much love and admiration from so many people around the world. Keep on running for him!  Best wishes Peter, Amanda and Sue”

Problem emails

Paul White rang me – he’d had a problem with his computer and an email had been forwarded under his name to all of the contacts in his address book.  He warns – “do not open the attachment – it can affect files on your hard drive”

No more Trotting up the Trollers (recollections by Peter Lambert)

I understand from Bob that this event has taken place for the last time and as co-founder of it over 20 years ago he asked me to put pen to paper on how it came about.  No falling asleep now as questions will be asked!

So here goes:

I joined the LDWA (Long Distance Walkers Association) in 1979 into the West Yorkshire Group as a keen walker with many years experience, Lyke Wake Walk, 3 Peaks etc.  Talk about lamb to the slaughter.  Unknown to me, the Group had a fearsome reputation nationally as to its antics regarding “walking”.  It was “run” literally by a group of battle-hardened fell runners who used these “walks” as training runs.

My first outing with them was a 30 miler in Lancashire and I quickly learnt 2 things – take a map and know how to use it – because, as day follows night, if you couldn’t keep up, you were left.  Not being into running then, I spent a lot of time on my own.

After a couple of years of this madness, a new member – and they were few and far between – by the name of John Sparshatt set about reforming the group to its original purpose namely walking.

He suggested organising a route of approximately 26 miles in the Yorkshire Dales.  I teamed up with his idea and the seeds of the Trollers Trot were sown on our dining room table with a map and lots of paper for notes.

After a couple of weeks we had the route worked out which needed walking.  If you think it’s an easy task to find a new route, sit down one evening with a map and work out 26 miles.

Apart from a few amendments we were in business.  The first venue was at Bolton Abbey Village Hall and the route went up Simon’s Seat, down to Howgill.  Its venue has changed over the years.  Grassington Town Hall and recently Threshfield, with variations to the route accordingly.  Happy days and memories.

The longest event I’ve ever been involved in is the annual LDWA 100 miler which took place one year from Settle.  Joyce and I, together with 6 others, were on a checkpoint at Buckden Village Hall for 29 hours and 40 minutes as the route passed through on the way out and on the way back.

So when Bob asks you to spare an hour for our events, just think how lucky you are.

PS. This particular event was won by an ultra distance runner Mike Cudahy who has run the Pennine Way in under 3 days!
