Very Important Notices

Training on Thursday 18 March – steady run 6:45 but meet at LEOS not at Scott Hall – afterwards curry at Arti on Harrogate Road (click for details) formerly the Police Station, centre of Chapel A) not the Ruchee

Leeds Half Marathon is now over 80% full and is likely to fill in next 10 days (sooner if they put any publicity in the local press). See below for details on how to enter online or by post.

Word of warning Valley Striders do not support the swapping of race numbers unless permitted by the race organiser.  This can lead to unexpected, embarrassing or disastrous consequences.  Three examples:

  • In a recent race a Strider took an Abbey Runner’s number without informing the race organiser and featured in the winning Abbey Runners team.  NB Abbey Runners have returned the team prize.
  • In the Meanwood Trail Race a few years ago, a male Ilkley Harrier used his wife’s number and won the W45 prize.
  • Many years ago two runners (not Striders) swapped numbers in the Leeds marathon.  One had a heart attack and died, the organisers contacted the other man’s wife to tell her the bad news.

Saturday 1 May – Parkrun Mob Run

Message from Thomas Atkinson

I am a race director from parkrun Leeds and am trying my utmost to increase awareness and participation in physical activity around the Leeds area. parkrun Leeds is a free weekly 5Km run around Hyde Park and has had 125 successful events to date. The race is for all ages and abilities, with a great community atmosphere and involvement from the University and local volunteers.

On May 1st 2010 parkrun Leeds are hosting a Mob style race whereby clubs from around the area are invited to come and represent their team and compete in both speed and participation categories. I have attached a poster advertising the event and I would be extremely grateful if you could help promote the event by making the event a part of your club’s calendar.

We are really hopeful you will come and support this event as it would be great to see all the runners in the area come together and compete against each other for a fun community event.

You can follow us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/Leedsparkrun?ref=ts where there will soon be information on this and future events.

Bob says: See http://www.parkrun.org.uk/leeds/Home.aspx  for details of these 5k races that take place every Saturday morning.  Valley Striders already has the third highest number of club runners in Leeds who have run parkrun (see http://www.parkrun.org.uk/leeds/Results/ClubList.aspx  )  – we’ve got to have a go at this, haven’t we?!

Geoff and Sylvia emailed

Thanks to our team of 32 marshals & to the others who turned up unexpectedly offering to help on the day; to Maureen Coffey who supplied the cake on the field & to Jerry for tea & buns at his house, shame more people didn't take advantage of his hospitality which could almost compete with the spread at the Hutton Roof fell race.

Bob says – although Jerry and Madeleine were running in their first claim colours of Thames Hare and Hounds, I am recommending that their performances are included in the Grand Prix on the basis of their tea and buns.  Maureen’s daughter was there supporting her club, Bristol and West, but, although Maureen’s cake was excellent (as testified by at least 15 Striders), we won’t be offering GP points to Bristol runners.

Clerk of the Course, John Lunn of Leeds City, wrote to us

'Now that the dust has settled after Saturday & I've come down to earth, I'd like personally to express to you & your Club members my thanks for everything you & they did towards making the events at Roundhay Park the success that they undoubtedly were.

You may be aware that this was my fourth 'National', & I had already decided before the event it would be my last, so you'll understand that I wanted to make as good a job of it as I could. In the last few days I've had numerous communications from clubs & individual athletes, all congratulating me on an excellent course for the Championships. In my opinion the praise is really due to you & the other clubs, without whose hard work & willingness none of my plans would have amounted to anything, & I'm honestly grateful to everybody for letting me go out on a high note.  I've always said that the secret of running an event of this sort is to get a lot of people to do one small job each & do it well; on Saturday you & your members helped to prove the point.

I'd be grateful if you'd pass on my thanks to all your members who contributed in any way at all to the Championships' success. Thanks again.'

Chris Leggatt took many pictures of Striders in action and I hope to have them on the website soon.

Sunday run with Serpentine Runners and Clapham Chasers

I was contacted by members of these two London running clubs the weekend prior to the race.  Both of them were staying overnight in Leeds after the “National” and both wanted recommendations for a run on Sunday morning and/or were interested in joining us on our Sunday run.

Many emails passed between Leeds and London during the week, and Tim Towler and John Wallace re-organised our Sunday run on 28 February to start from Bridgewater Place (the Dalek in the centre of Leeds), to run up the canal to Horsforth, round the Ring Road to Smithy Mills, and down the Meanwood Trail back into Leeds.  7 Striders were joined by 13 runners from London.

Poppy Lenton from Serpentine Runners emailed on Sunday evening:  just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for not only allowing the Serpies to join today but also picking them up and making them so welcome ... they loved the run!   Do say if we can ever be so obliging if any of your guys are down in London.

The England Athletics website reported “The chance to run over a traditionally great course at Roundhay Park, Leeds was too good to miss and record numbers competed last Saturday at the National Cross Country Championships staged by the English Cross Country Association.” Click here for full report.

Cupar 5 mile – from George Black (now M70)

Had my first proper race in my new 70 age group.on Saturday 27 February. The event was the Cupar 5 on a certified course I managed a 35:19. After my enforced 2 year break through various events I have averaged 19 miles a week running and about 24 miles a week cycling since January .Roads have been VERY bad. I have completed 13 Turbo sessions on the bike so that may have helped.

I am heading down to Clumber Park, Worksop, for the British Duathlon Champs.(Saturday 6 March.)  There are Age Group category championships with qualifying places for the British Team at the World Duathlon Champs being held in Edinburgh this September. I will be competing under the Valley Striders and my triathlon club Glasgow Nightingale. Let you know how I get on. Should qualify barring incident but the win does not look likely. Will be a good event with full field of 650 entered.

British Duathlon Championships – from George Black
