Subject: V S Update - Arrangements for "National", race dates and Yorkshire XC report

The “National” (Saturday 27 February)

Event details are now on the England Cross Country website ECCA website http://www.englishcrosscountry.co.uk/ .

Venue map  http://www.englishcrosscountry.co.uk/images/leeds-layout.jpg .  We are marshalling in the middle of Soldiers’ Fields (near where it says “Trade Area” on the map) and hope to be able to set up a small tent there, ostensibly for marshals’ provisions but we’ll also hand out the numbers from there.

If you’re running, don’t forget to bring your club vest and 4 safety pins.  Collect your number and timer chip from the team tent (look out for the Valley Striders banner).  Note that you must return your chip at the end of the race – runners not returning chips will be required to pay £7.

Spectators and supporters welcome.  We’ve got a good place on Soldiers’ Fields as you can watch the start of each race and then get quickly to the top of Hill 60 to see the runners come up for the end of their lap and for the finish.

Hospitality – message from Jerry Watson

As I did for the Northern two years ago, I am offering my house (65, Old Park Road - we are on the south corner of Old Park Road and the cul-de-sac Avenue Victoria) for pre-race loo and/or post race tea & bun (get there early!). I'll hang a Valley T-shirt in the front garden (together with a TH&H black saltire).

The house should be open all day so a marshal in need of warmth is also welcome whatever the time (slight question mark 10.50 to 11.20-ish as my son is running then).

Alas I cannot offer much parking. Previous experience of large events in the Park would suggest approaching from the west using Lidgett Lane or Little Switzerland and parking in roads like Davies Avenue / The Drive / North Park Avenue. Don't blame me though if this doesn't work!  Also note that Old Park Road has new double yellow lines for its full length.

Parking – message from Patrick Barrett

Patrick lives at 95 Old Park Road (behind the tennis courts) and is offering parking spaces – first come first served.

Sunday Run – 28 February

We’ve been contacted by Serpentine RC and Clapham Chasers who have teams at the National on Saturday, and some of them will be joining us for our Sunday run.  Note that, for one week only, the Sunday run will start from the centre of Leeds, not from Smithy Mills.

Lasagne – Tuesday 2 March

Bookings are open for lasagne after training at Leos on Tuesday 2 March.  Email [email protected] stating whether you want meat lasagne or vegetarian lasagne, and whether you want apple pie.  Bookings will close 10pm on Sunday 28 February

Races on weekend 6/7 March

Sat 6 March – Trollers Trot from Threshfield.  Entries Close: Tuesday 2nd at 23:59 details at SiEntries - 18th Trollers Trot.  No entries on the day.  This is a Grand Prix event.  I can only see 3 Striders entered so lots of GP points available!

Sun 7 March – Peco final XC at Esholt – senior race at 11:00, junior races 8-10years at 10:00, 11-16 years at 10:20 (based on age at 8 Nov 2009).  Details at http://www.abbeyrunners.co.uk/PECO/race5.html . No post-race food will be provided, so the Senior entry fee will be £2.00 instead of £2.50.

Sun 7 March – first race in Yorkshire Vets series – at Meltham.

  • 9:30am from Meltham Community Sports Centre.
  • Excellent changing facilities and showers plus large lounge with hot drinks and snacks. The bar is usually open as well.
  • There is ample car parking close by. Follow directions of marshals.
  • Mostly off road on tracks and fields with some long climbs and descents, approx. 6 miles
  • £3.00 on the day  (remember you can register for the season on the website before the race)
  • From the centre of Meltham follow signs for Slaithwaite and Marsden. Where Slaithwaite Road turns sharp left, turn right down Mean Lane just after Morrisons’ supermarket. The sports centre is on your left just before the road peters out into a track! Map.

Some races for rest of March

London and other big marathons in April and May, so the season for 20 mile races is upon us.  Spen 20 and Trimpell (Morecambe) 20 are on 14 March, East Hull 20 on 28 March.

Also on 14 March is a 5k from South Leeds Stadium.  21 March there is a 10k in Bradford.  Also on 28 March, Baildon Boundary Way is full, but the Wakefield 10k is still open for entries and usually takes entries on the day.

Details of all of these at http://www.ukresults.net/2010cal.html#mar

Leeds Half Marathon Sunday 9 May – details at www.leeds.gov.uk/runleeds Advise to enter in the next 2 to 3 weeks as it may fill before the end of March.  The organisers have asked whether we can provide some marshals for the event.  Last year we had 12 marshals (and the Valley Striders banner) in our home territory on Meanwood Road.

Meanwood Valley Trail Saturday 15 May – entries going well, we have over 50 so far.  We also need about 60 marshals and helpers on the day, so let me know if you are available to help.

Haltwhistle Challenge I’ve had an email asking “Would any of your members would like to join us for the Haltwhistle Challenge?  It is a 26 mile run/walk on May 8th. We have 100 places for runners and 200 places for walkers.  The route is a circular one from Haltwhistle. It includes the Haltwhistle Burn, Cawfield Quarry, Caw Gap, part of the Hadrian's Wall trail to Greenhead, south via Kellah Moor to Lambley Viaduct and return to town via the South Tyne Valley. The Challenge is organised by the Haltwhistle Walking Festival. Full details are available on www.haltwhistlewalkingfestival.org “.  Looks an interesting and scenic route.

Race Officials Training Course There is a course on Sunday 14 March 12noon to 3pm at Dewsbury.  This is specifically aimed at officials/marshals for road and off-road races.  If you are interested in learning not only how to point the way but also about setting up the route, timekeeping, recording etc, then let me know and I’ll book a place for you.

Alison Bogie emailed  I am living in NZ now. It has taken some time to get used to the heat and humidity of Auckland (not that I'm complaining!!). There are plenty of races to take part in as there is a weekly 5k series every Tues night from an Irish pub and also a Thursday night 10k round a local park. I am also in training for Rotorua Marathon in May - a popular marathon over here.

Holly Williams is in the process of transferring her first claim membership from Keighley and Craven to us.  In the meantime she emailed “I ran at Ilkley yesterday but had to run for Keighley, does that mean it won’t count for our club champs?  Also, is there anyone running at Noonstone on Sat who has a spare place in their car. No worries if not, the trains are pretty decent to Tod.”

Yorkshire XC Championship – report from Jerry Watson

A small Valley contingent made it to Wakefield. The county championship is of course the race that all club athletes should write in their calendar at the beginning of the season but the postponement did probably effect the numbers today. The sun was out for most of it so a great day for cross-country running, although beginning to chill off a bit by the time the senior men ran. Although not really muddy, the course was very slippy at corners and on cambers so a day for 15 mm spikes.

LADIES RACE - 5.85km or 1 small & 2 medium for those that know the course

  1 Victoria Wilkinson   19.53 (Bingley H)
 72 Madeleine Watson     26.12

MENS RACE - 10.4km or 4 big laps for those in the know

  1 Mark Buckingham      33.06 (Holmfirth H)
103 Jerry Watson         41.56
182 Malcolm Coles        49.19
188 Tony Haygarth        50.04
