Peco XC – Sunday 31 January

The next race is at John Smeaton Sports Centre, details are at http://www.abbeyrunners.co.uk/PECO/race4.html

Striders teams are currently placed as follows – Men 4th, Ladies 3rd, Men Vets 5th, Ladies Vets 4th.

A good team turnout is required in our quest for leading places.

Note that the final race will be on Sunday 7 March, venue yet to be decided.  This is the same weekend as the Trollers Trot so it may be that we remove the Trot from the Grand Prix.

Presentation by Ali Rose – Tuesday 2 February at Leos

Thanks to Tracey Morris, we are pleased to welcome Ali Rose to Leos on Tuesday 2 February for a presentation and demonstration of drills and injury prevention.

Ali is lead physiotherapist at Leeds Carnegie Sports Centre.  Her personal clients include Olympic athletes Kelly Holmes, Jessica Ennis and Tracey Morris.  Read more on http://www.alirose.net/

Tuesday 2 February will be our normal 3 by 10 minutes at High Ashes (weather permitting) followed by pie and peas (book to [email protected] stating whether meat pie or vegetarian bake, and whether mushy peas or baked beans).  NB no dessert this week.

If you are coming for the food and presentation, please arrive for 8:15pm.  If you are just coming for the presentation, please arrive for 8:45pm.

We already have 17 bookings for food so it looks like it’s going to be a popular do.

6-7 February

  • Saturday 6 February - Wadsworth Trog 20 mile race in Striders Fell Championship www.cvfr.co.uk  Closing date 31 January – no entries on the day
  • Saturday 6 February - Rombalds Stride 24 miles from Guiseley (not sure of closing date)
  • Saturday 6 February - Yorkshire Vets XC – ENTRIES CLOSED
  • Sunday 7 February - Dewsbury 10k in Striders Grand Prix, online entries available at www.ukresults.net until Saturday 30 January.  It’s expensive but a fast course (slightly uphill out, slightly downhill back, so if you’re looking for a PB, look no further)

Brass Monkey results

A total of 45 Striders (including 2 second-claimers) ran and we were only outnumbered by Quakers with 48 – you may have seen them with white vests and a number of narrow black stripes of varying width at the bottom of their vests.  Harrogate Harriers (black with red and yellow) also has 43 first claim runners

If there had been a team prize for second team, it would have easily been ours, as it was, the first team prize went to Andy May, Jeremy Rogers and Duncan Calrk from Abbey who finished 8, 9, and 13.

Lots and lots of PB’s, so many of you must have kept your training up during the icy conditions, well done!

If all you need is an entry form

Or enter online (£2 extra)

http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/events/viewevent.asp?sp=&v=2&EN=51438

My information is that there are already over 1000 entries – most of whom have paid the £2 extra.  The race limit is again 3,800 and although the closing date is 12 April, I expect it to fill sometime during March.

Striders had 50 finishers last year, the most from any club.  Same again this year?  Get filling in the form!

Research on effect of altitude

New Strider, Amanda Seims, writes:

I am a PhD student at Leeds Met uni looking into the effects of training the muscles involved in breathing on the body's responses at high altitude (simulated 3000m in our lab).  The requirements are that you must be aged between 18-55, non-smoker with no medical conditions, have previously been to an altitude over 2000m on at least 2 occasions, have never experienced altitude sickness and have regularly trained for at least 2 years, exercising 3-4 times a week for at least an hour and a half each time (Total training session time including warm-up and stretching).

You would be required to visit us on a total of 8 occasions over 8-9 weeks. It is important that you are not planning on taking any trips to altitude during this time (i.e. skiing, trekking the Inca trail, mountain race at altitude).   You would also need to keep your training fairly stable during this time - if you suddenly increased your training then you may show an improvement in our study due to fitness and not due to the respiratory training.

You will be required to complete fairly strenuous exercise tests in the laboratory, including an assessment of VO2max, however the actual training sessions will be completed on your own at home using a respiratory training device, twice a day for approximately 5 min each time.

You will be able to keep the training device at the end of the study and will have the opportunity to learn how you body reacts in a controlled high altitude environment.

If you would like further information please contact me at [email protected].

Amanda also asked “Would I be able to borrow a small club vest as I won't have time to get one before Rombalds next weekend?”  Could someone bring one on Tuesday?
