Sunday 1 March - PECO Cross Country League (2008-9): Race 5 (Woodkirk)

Valley Striders Fell, Ultra, multi-sport and Adventure race info (from Anthony)

I guess if Runners World calls it unconventional then it must be the right thing to do?  Here are some dates for the diary.

1st March – Open 5.  I am sure you are all doing cross country, but on Sunday, Maria Dixon is off to do the Open 5 Adventure race up in Malham so good luck to her! 5 hours of running and mountain bike orienteering in one of the nicest part of gods own land. I would also be doing it if I thought my foot could handle it, unfortunately I will have to look at the next in the series on the 5th April in the Peak district. If anyone interested in the event I can get you free entry for your first event. Email me to find out more. [email protected]

7th March – Half tour of Pendle.  I see no-one was fast enough to get entries for this race. Also think that most of the other English Champs is full? I have managed to get entry for Langdale and Wasdale but I am guessing I am flying the Strider flag alone?  Also got entry to the High Peaks Marathon, but luckily injured myself so no running through the night for me.

14th March – The Windmill Wizz – Valley Strider Fell Champs race.  The next in the fell champs is a 6 miles multi–terrain. A fair bit of road so good for those xc types. Entry on the day only.  Further Details http://www.ogdenwater.freeserve.co.uk/page5.html Course Map http://www.ogdenwater.freeserve.co.uk/page9.html

14th March - The Wuthering Hike, 33 miles and 4400ft of ascent around Haworth, Todmorden and Hebden Bridge. Further Details at the Keighley and Craven website http://www.kcac.co.uk/?page_id=199 .  Also check out Mick Loftus’s write up http://valleystriders.org.uk/rr_wutheringhike2006.htm .  Also part of the runfurther series http://www.runfurther.com/ .  I believe Mick has entered and if my foot makes some kind of miracle recovery then so will I.

14th March - The Trollers Trot, 24 miles around Burnsall, Trollers Gill etc. http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/events/viewevent.asp?EN=43429 . I think Geoff it entering this one.

More details of April’s races will follow but a few of the races are as follows

5th April – Blubberhouses Moor 25 http://www.ldwa.org.uk/challenge_events/show_event.php?list_option=S&list_type=F&event_id=4229  Mixed terrain, mainly trail.

5th April – Baildon Boundary Way – Valley Striders Grand Prix Race.  Entries closed but we may be able to do some number swaps so let Bob know if you’ve a number but won’t be running

18th April – IROC Adventure Race Weekend – A mix of a number of events, these are two fell, two orienteering events and two mountain bike events. http://www.iroc-race.com

18th April – Calderdale Hike – Part of the runfurther series and a mere 37 miles round Calderdale. Be good if you can read a map and be prepared for a tough challenge. http://www.calderdalehike.org.uk

25th April - 3 Peaks Fell Race – Entries now closed but there is a fair few striders out for this race. One of 4 to choose from for the Long races in the fell champs.

26th April – Dark and White Adventure race – 4 hours of running and mountain biking http://darkandwhite.co.uk/adventure-racing.asp

As always, any further info then email me on [email protected] or phone 07939 441343

And if you just like the road (from Bob)

Sunday 15 March – Spen 20  – Valley Striders Grand Prix Race. http://ukresults.net/09mar.html#spen20 .  Not as hilly as it sounds!

Sunday 22 March – South Leeds 5 miles.  If you’re trying to get a Valley Striders Performance Certificate (and 60 Striders have got one so far), you need to have 5 race performances at 3 different distances.  If you  only run races up to 10k, this can be a problem – there are plenty of 5k’s about (Hyde Park every Saturday) and plenty of 10k’s, so the South Leeds 5 (MILES) gives you the opportunity to get your third distance. http://ukresults.net/09mar.html#southleeds

Sunday 22 March – East Retford half marathon – looking for a half marathon before a spring marathon?  This one isn’t full http://ukresults.net/09mar.html#retford

Sunday 6 April – Wakefield 10k – this was the Abbey-Valley challenge last year, but this year clashes with the Baildon Boundary Way which is a V S Grand Prix race but is now full.  So if you want a fairly fast 10k, Wakefield is the place to go http://ukresults.net/09apl.html#wakefield

Note also three races that will fill well before closing dates and all are in the Striders Grand Prix.  Monday 5 May – Rothwell 10k http://ukresults.net/09may.html#rothwell ,   Wednesday 7/14/21 May – Esholt 5k series http://ukresults.net/09may.html#johncarr1 ,   Sunday 10 May – Leeds Half Marathon http://www.leeds.gov.uk/page.aspx?pageidentifier=abd608ad-77a3-45ad-bf66-e1e6a71f33c3 .  As I always say – you have been warned!!

Message from Hannah at Lineham Farm

Hi Bob, Hope all is well.

I have been offered some places in a triathlon in Wetherby on the 24th May this year. There would be no entry fee I would just ask people to raise money for Lineham. Do you know anyone who might want to do it?

Many Thanks

Message from Rachael Nevins

Do you know if anyone is planning to do the Medoc marathon – it’s meant to be great fun and I wondered if the club were planning an outing??

SOCIAL SECTION

Many many thanks to Tracey for a great evening yesterday and for answering so many questions!

Paul claimed no technical knowledge but had put together about 100 pictures in a continuous slideshow, and there was some great sequencing especially Tracey in the ice bath followed by the Palma boys in the hit-tub!

If you were wondering  who some of the people in the pictures were (other than Tracey, Paula and Haile), then some of the pictures are on the V S Website and I’ll try and get them linked to Tracey’s page http://valleystriders.org.uk/tracey.htm over the weekend.

At the end Alan Hutchinson presented some V S Performance Certificates – if you want to know what these are, see http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsperfs.htm . Sixty different Striders have earned one of these so far since they started in 2007 – have you got yours yet?

We also handed back Tracey’s vase which now shows her 5 major marathons – UK, Olympic, Commonwealth, European and World.  There is definitely still space to engrave another Commonwealth marathon or a World Masters marathon.

Thank you to everyone who collaborated in my memento and champagne, I was completely taken by surprise (you may have noticed).

Finally, something completely different, I’ve realized that I never let you know that at the Xmas Do the raffle raised £80 for Lineham Farm, so a belated thanks to Steve, Jane and Jenny for this and to everyone there who “donated” so generously.

RESULTS SECTION

Ilkley Moor Fell Race (from Anthony)

Good to see a few Striders at the Ilkley Moor fell event. A strong field turned up for the race and this was won by Ian Holmes of Bingley, followed by Rob Hope of P&B. Eirik being first strider home in 48mins and 14 secs in 86th. Eirik is becoming our very own off road media slut, he always seems to be near the camera?!

A piccie of Eirik here http://www.photos-dsb.co.uk/Ilkley%20Moor%20Fell%20Race%202009/ppages/ppage58.htm

and another here http://picasaweb.google.com/BobEWightman/IlkleyFellRace#5305634088292702994

If anyone is going to or has been to any other races then do drop me a quick mail to [email protected] . It would be good to try to encourage car sharing and also to let other striders know what you are doing.

English XC Champs (from Steve)

Only one VS vest in action at what should be the most prestigious race of the year for all club athletes; Sara was entered but her foot injury did not get over the effort of the Buttermere Round 20 last weekend.

Anyway it was fantastic sunny weather and a great atmosphere at the classic venue of Parliament Hill Fields and the mens' race of 12k comprised two very long laps.  The highest part of the course was firm going but the lower slopes were a glutinous quagmire which took 15mm spikes, the rest of the shoe, the ankle and part of the calf.  Very hard work.

   1. Frank Tickner   Wells        38.02

 560. Steve Webb                   50.43

 707. Jerry Watson    Thames H&H   52.48

1455 survived.  Leeds City placed 3rd in defence of their men’s team title.

Oliver Watson ran for Leeds Carnegie in the U15 Boys and was 322/398.

Next year the National will be at Roundhay Park so let's have a big turnout for this most historic of championships.

Snake Lane 10

In the Abbey-Valley Challenge we were overwhelmed by the Abbey numbers – 50 Abbeys to 28 Striders.  The final score was Abbey 4658 Valley 3142.

In the end, I even had a couple of spare race numbers in the car.  We’d had 12 drop-outs and only 10 replacements.

Compensation for the Striders came in the form of 1st place for Tracey, 3rd place for Vicky and a M40 prize for Kevin.  Tracey, Vicky and Caz won the women’s team cup (which I need to get engraved).

For the re-match in the Autumn we’re going to have to have a serious think about the most suitable venue for the Striders.
