There is a
one-day course available from England Athletics which covers all the aspects of
leading a training session, whether it be for newcomers to running or for
serious runners (like ourselves). Tim Towler and myself have both been on
this course. We would like every Valley Striders training session to
include at least one qualified leader.

After a stimulating email debate a meeting was held recently
to determine the basis on which the 2009 Fell Championship will be

what was decided at the meeting for the 2009 championship.
Twelve qualifying races: 4 short, 4 medium, 4 long.

least one short, one medium and one long.
Your score at each race

Anthony has kindly volunteered to collate results and
calculate scores using Steve’s unique patent pending system. The scores
will be publicised after each race and totals will be updated on the VS
website.
Geoff has kindly volunteered to create a new trophy to be
awarded to the lady with the highest score in the championship. Any
suggestions for the design of this masterpiece of conceptual art to go to GW at
his studio – but please no pickled Swaledale sheep or unmade beds.

2009 Grand Prix – from
Bob Jackson
A few
changes – we’ve added the Ilkley Trail Race and the Ilkley Incline to the list
of Grand Prix races, which completes the calendar. The Ilkley Incline is
an interesting race, it is just one mile … uphill!
Having
completed the calendar, we have removed the Wetherby 10k because it is the same
date as the Yorkshireman. Suggestions are required for a replacement 5k,
5mile or 10k race.
Note that 5
of the races in the Fell Championship are also in the Grand Prix – by running
these you would not only qualify for the Fell Championship, but also only need
3 more to qualify for the Grand Prix.
These
double counting races are : Jack Bloor, Ilkley Trail, Wharfedale, Round Hill
and Yorkshireman.
There is
also a proposal (from me) to change the scoring system for the Grand Prix so
that it is not biased towards races where only a few Striders turn up. To
see the new system, click on http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsclubch.htm
. Comments please!
English Fell
Championship – from Anthony Fryer
This year the English Champs events are all a bit more local
than in previous years so if interested in doing them it is a lot easier than
usual.
6 races in the series. Best 4 results count and 1 needs to be done at each
distance.
The champs are as follows
Short: Stretton Hills (Sat. 6th June), Dentdale (Sat. 29th Aug.)
Medium: Half Tour of Pendle (Sat. 7th March), Tebay (Sat. 20th June)
Long: Wasdale (Sat. 11th July), Langdale (Sat. 10th Oct.)
I will be doing Tebay, Dentdale, Wasdale and Langdale. So if anyone is
interested but is not up for the drive there and back you are more than welcome
to car share. Also if you are just interested in one ot two of the races just
to see what the Champs are like then again let me know.
Some are pre-entry and will fill up fast!
Half Tour of Pendle - Entries open at Clayton Le Moor Website http://www.clayton-le-moors-harriers.co.uk/
or http://ukresults.net/09mar.html#halftour
. A grand total of £4 to enter. I have a map of the course that I am happy to
copy although will be a big field and a short course so nav will not be a
problem.
Stretton Hills - Bit far away and is entry on the day. Don't know much
about it?
Tebay - A nice day out in the Howgills. Grassy, fast running perfect for
those who like XC but just add a few more hills. Again I have a map of the
course but should be okay with nav. Not sure about entry for this as awaiting
my calendar.
Dentdale - Entry forms not out yet but website is http://www.dentdale.com/fellrace.htm
Part of the Dentdale show so can take the family http://www.dentdale.com/dentdaleshow.htm
Wasdale - Entries found here. Total of £6. Pre-entry only and a limit of
250 hardy souls. http://www.cfra.co.uk/ Didn't fill
up last time it was a champs race but this is getting more popular. Note that
it is a tough race that in bad weather would require navigation skills. One of
the hardest on the calendar. I did it last year and here is how I found it. http://middlepack.co.uk/2008/07/wasdale-fell-race/
Again I have a map.
Langdale - Pre-entry, there is a limit but I think it is around 500 as a
champs race. Last years entry details here. This will fill up as it is a
classic race. http://www.amblesideac.org.uk/Langdale_2008.htm
I know some people are put off by some of the fell races that need navigation
skills. If that is a concern for people then let me know. I will happily go
through the basics on a weekend up on Ilkley Moor. Even put on a little
navigation training event for you to brush up your skills. I also have an
e-book on mountain nav that people are welcome to have.

GP Points
allocated on Chip time. My sprint to the line to beat Liz was in
vain.
There were
1279 finishers. Striders had 34 of them, but Darlington Quakers with 41
and Dragons with 37 both had more. Our 34 was equalled by Abbey.
But,
looking at positions, we had 29 in the top half, and this was well ahead of the
others (Quakers 20, Abbey 19).
