Membership Subs Due

The website is up-to-date with membership status. http://valleystriders.org.uk/reg2008.htm   If your name is marked ‘07’ you are owing £14 for the Striders year September 2008 to August 2009.

Please send a cheque payable to Valley Striders to Paul White, 17 Whinmoor Court, Redhall, LS14 1NX

NB if you are second-claim or a junior or a social member or a volunteer or a life member or your most recent payment was 2006 (or more than one of these categories), then please contact me for the appropriate rate.

Membership Cards

I think 20 of you have received membership cards in the last 2 months and the other 150 are still waiting (you’d have received last year’s card in February 2008 but this expired at the end of March 2008!).  I’m told that the others should arrive this week.  Please let me know if you get your card.

Pie and Peas

Tuesday 2 December will be a pie and peas night.  Please email me before 10pm Sunday 30 November or text 0777 5898 558 before 2pm Monday 1 December, stating whether you want meat pie or vegetarian bake, whether mushy peas or bakes beans, and (optional extra) whether you want apple pie.

Abbey Dash

Technology at races is getting more and more impressive, within about 5 minutes of crossing the line today, runners were getting a text message with their chip time and gun time.  But you knew these anyway, because you had your watch to record your “run” time and saw the clock as you finished to give your “traditional” time.  OK so the text did give your position too.  What next – a voicemail half way round to give you your predicted time based on the first 5k and whether you seemed to be slowing or getting faster?  Soon you won’t even need to run, just input your training times and what you ate for tea last night and it will calculate your time for you!

There were 46 Striders today.  Would have been more if one of our ladies hadn’t looked out of the window at 7:30 and seeing the snow, decided to go back to bed.  She missed ideal running conditions, there were plenty of PBs among the leading runners (six broke 30 minutes), and I guess plenty amongst the Striders too.

The Valley Striders banner and number one supporter Joyce the Voice should both have been at the viaduct lights today but Joyce had an accident while walking yesterday and has chipped a bone in her elbow so will be out of action for a while.  If you want to send a get well message, the address is 27 Baronsway LS15 7AW.

Grand Prix Update

For 6 Striders, it was their first GP race of the year.  146 Striders have now run at least one GP race.

And 32 Striders have now run 8 or more races in the Grand Prix.  The 8 races is the minimum to qualify for any of the GP category prizes and is also the minimum to qualify for a GP T-shirt.

At the Xmas Presentation Night there will be Grand Prix winners T-shirts for 1st Man, 1st Woman, 1st M40, 1st M50, 1st W35 and the 1st in each group B,C,D,E.  i.e. 9 in total.  But any of the other Striders who have run 8 or more races may purchase their own for £8.75.  Please email Paul White [email protected] if you’d like a T-shirt.

If you’ve only run 6 or 7 races you have 2 chances to make this up to 8.  This coming Sunday (30th) is the Thirsk 10, almost certainly taking entries on the day.  The following Sunday (7 December) is the West Yorks XC race at Wakefield, if you’ve not entered already you must let me know by Tuesday 26 November at the latest.

Tour Of Pendle – report by Anthony Fryer

New report on blog www.middlepack.co.uk about tour of pendle. Managed 22nd out of 200 with a time of 2 hrs 51 mins, which even if I do say so myself is a good time! After a bit of results jiggery pokery I ended up being 13th? Won a £10 voucher.

Harrogate Ringway Relay

Sunday 4 January, teams of 5, please make your own teams if you can (you must have one lady and one person over-40 and one person over-45).

If you need more to make a team, let me know and I’ll try to match up teams.  The usual arrangement is to try and get an “A” team and then some equally matched teams for a bit of competition.

Longest leg is 5 miles, so any leg can be recce’d out-and-back as a training run.

Why do club runners run for charity?

I don’t know why, and nor does Leigh Sedgley of Wetherby Runners, but she does want to know for a project she is working on.

If you’d like to help her by filling in her questionnaire (and to help us, because she says she’ll send us the results), then click on http://valleystriders.org.uk/leigh-sedgley-questionnaire.doc.  NB there are only 8 questions so it should only take 3 or 4 minutes.

New VS Committee

If you need information about the club or have any suggestions then our new committee are here to help.

They are Laura Clark, Paul Hunter, Bob Jackson, Dan Murray, Hayley Nancolas, Tracy Stewart, Sharon Tansley, Sylvia Watson, Geoff Webster, Paul White.

We may not know the answers straight away but we are having a committee meeting before Xmas and will be on the case.
