Subject: VS Update - Diary (note changes), LCW, Results, Mustard Pot
Dates
Sorry, I’m going to repeat most of last week’s V S Update because there is so much going on in September. A few important changes are highlighted. Lists of dates also at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vsdates.htm
Sunday 31 August – Leeds Country Way – teams listed below together with estimated start times. Come and support the Striders at one of the changeovers, or even better find a mid way point on one of the legs and offer water and/or encouragement.
Tuesday 2 September – normal session 3 by 10 minute. Then lasagne night at Leos. Please book, saying whether you want meat or vegetarian lasagne, and whether you want apple pie. Book by email before 10pm Sunday or text to 0777 5898 558 before 2pm Monday. List of bookings at www.valleystriders.org.uk/vslists.htm . Also Special General Meeting to discuss new Club Constitution see http://valleystriders.org.uk/vsconst.htm for details, please print a copy!
Wednesday 3 September – Hyde Park 5k (GP points)
Sunday 7 September – Leeds Half Marathon (GP points). We have 56 Striders entered which is 16 more than any other club. Swapping of race numbers is strictly forbidden, but if, despite this, you are still considering it, please read the “17 rules” http://valleystriders.org.uk/17rules.htm . Hopefully we’ll be the best supported club, too. Popular vantage points for Striders supporters are Meanwood Shops, top of Stonegate Road and of course at the end in the Headrow. The race organisers are looking for marshals, and clubs supplying a team of marshals will get a donation from Leeds City Council. Please let me know before next Tuesday if you are available. Afterwards at the Mustard Pot in Chapel Allerton (see below).
Tuesday 9 September – TRACK CANCELLED – track being resurfaced. The HAREWOOD RECCE run is brought forward one week (to take advantage of an extra 10 minutes daylight). This is part of the Harewood Trail Race route. 5 mile, 8 mile and 10 mile routes available (bring headtorch for 10 mile). Meet Harewood Village Hall, Church Lane, LS17 9LJ at 6:30 pm. We’ll set off 6:40 pm at the latest.
Sunday 14 September – Yorkshireman marathon and half (GP points).
Sunday 14 September - Cancer Research run at Harewood – 6 more marshals needed – please let me know if you are available to marshal for this very good cause.
Sunday 14 September - Wetherby 10k (not GP)
Tuesday 16 September – this will now be the normal session 5 by 6 minute
Friday 19 September – cut-off for entries for West Yorks Cross Country League (see below)

Tuesday 23 September – Autumn Handicap. Meet by the Res at 6:45 prompt. (it goes dark early)
Sunday 28 September – Abbey Valley Challenge at Horsforth 10k (and GP points). Ranges of numbers have been reserved for Striders and Abbey. Can we retain the Abbey Valley Challenge Trophy? Please enter early!
Tuesday 30 September – Hill session at Eccup (last summer session).
Sunday 5 October – Harewood 10 Mile Trail Race organised by Valley Striders. 40 more marshals needed. Please let me know if you are available to marshal for this, our biggest fundraising event - last year we raised over £3000 for Lineham Farm Children’s Centre.
Sunday 12 October – first race in West Yorkshire Cross Country League. At Otley. Striders are helping Otley A C organise the race. 20 Striders needed to help please (some of whom will be able to run the race). The other 3 races in the series are Sunday 26 October at Guiseley, Saturday 15 November at Wetherby and Sunday 7 December at Wakefield. It costs £7 (in total) for 4 races, if you want to enter the series, please give your £7 to Paul White BEFORE 19 SEPTEMBER. No late entries allowed, and number-swapping is strictly forbidden.

Race Results
Bingley Show Trail race - Sunday 10th August – from Mick Tinker
approx 3 miles up and down - light showers with sunny interludes
1 Tim Midgley (Bingley Harriers) 16:14
25 Mick Tinker (Valley Striders) 22:56
59 finished
For the first time in the history of this short but sharp "fell" race the route was reversed, after lots of rain had made the usual wood/field descent dangerous. So a charge down the unmade stony track replaced the usual climb up it. I made up 2 places on my first race here in 2006, but in a smaller field, with my time 3 mins slower this time around. Thus I missed out on the M50 prize - by 4 places (plus 3 M55+) - having won it last time!
Spofforth Gala Trail Race 10k and a bit
A new route, forced on the organisers by the Aberford to Pannal gas pipeline works. Proved to be a good change for Paul “I’ll never do off-road” White who won the prize for first M60. Congratulations! (By the way this is the same person as Paul “I’ll never run a marathon” White who ran his first one last year and his second will be at New York this Autumn.)
Up & Running
Sale at Up & Running Leeds Central. The “flood damage” sale is still on in the Leeds Store, up to 40% off. Has been recommended by a couple of Striders - some bargains still to be had, they said.
Mustard Pot
Strider Nicola Storey has emailed
“I am opening The Mustard Pot in Chapel Allerton as my new venture. Please let everyone know it is opening next weekend in time for the Chapel Allerton Festival. It’s going to be a gastro style pub, relaxed with great quality and a huge beer garden.”
“We aim to restore the Mustard Pot back into the hearts of the community by welcoming old and new customers to please join us for fine ales, Great British food, local friends and good times in beautiful, cosy surroundings.”
“The following Sunday, there will be a special offer if you show your Leeds Half Marathon race number”
(NB I’m told this offer is also open Chapel Allerton Road Runners who are second claim Valley Striders!)
