Race Reports

Wharfedale Triple T (from Steve Webb)

My dodgy ankle ruled out another foray in the solo class at the Saunders Mountain Marathon and so last weekend I headed instead for Kettlewell, and 3 races in 3 days.  The weather on Friday evening was absolutely glorious for the 4k uphill only road race.  The race ends at the top of the pass to Coverdale and is really hard; on the hairpin bend at Park Rash the slope appears too steep for tarmac to remain in situ!  I was 7th in about 20 minutes - much longer than I take for 5k on the flat.  Race winner was the evergreen Ian Holmes of Bingley Harriers.

Saturday saw a 20k navigational fell race (Cat. A Medium) around, up and over Great Whernside.  The weather was no longer perfect and people were left fumbling about in driving rain and very low visibility around the summit plateau.  I was in the chasing group which almost closed the gap to the leaders at the trig point after they had gone wandering in the mist.  On this day I was 10th, being tailed off a little on the tussocky descent. (The "TTT" stands for tarmac, trail and tussock - so I couldn't really complain about misrepresentation)

Finally on Sunday morning we reconvened for the 3k (Cat. A Short) fell race which leaves the event field, goes straight up through the scree and crags above Kettlewell, traverses some upland meadow and comes back down a track.  All over in the blink of an eye and the gasp of a lung; and pro-rata to the distance I probably did did more walking than in any other race I can think of.

My finish position was 8th on day 3, good enough for 5th place overall and 2nd Vet behind Ian Holmes, who was series winner with three outright wins. But there was very good competition at the front; in each race he was only a few seconds ahead of Joe Mercer of Skipton.  Sara ran on day 1 and day 3 but found other things to do on the Saturday, so no Grand Prix mug for her.

Editor’s note, if you are wondering how Steve managed glorious weather last weekend, this event took place in July and his report has been in my inbox for a while

Scandal of missing points in VS Fell Championship (from GW)

Steve Webb  210 points (Round Hill not included)

Steve Webb, captain of the fell section & prolific winner of the VS Fell Championship, was missed off the recent points list. This was, of course, a sneaky attempt to keep him from winning again. An eagle-eyed investigator spotted the omission and so Captain Webb has been reinstated with full points tally!!'

Other results

None of these – apologies, our results collector is on holiday!  But race reports are welcome from everyone.

Where’s Brian Hanley?

Brian won the VS marathon trophy a year ago.  What’s he up to?  He emailed:

“I have moved my research from running into the infinitely more complicated and bizarre world of elite race walking.  I've been to Russia to collect data at the Race Walking World Cup (probably worth a race review due to its sheer oddness - they even had 20,000 at the Opening Ceremony) and hopefully will travel to Australia to collect data there too.  But of course I'm still hoping to spend more time running and getting back into competition!”
