Subject: V S Update - Various Events and Cross Country Result
If you are registered, then please turn up if you can.
As an added incentive, Striders Grand Prix points are available for this
race. Ladies, we have only just had enough for a team for the first two
races – your club needs you!
The race HQ is the opposite end of the racecourse from the
Brass Monkey. If you’re coming along the A64 from Leeds, about half a mile
after the junction for the ring road and Copmanthorpe, get in the left hand
lane and take the A1036 to
NB This only applies to the 48 Striders
pre-registered for the series. There are
strictly no entries on the day.
If you want to run the final race on 2 December at
Club Night – Tuesday 20 November
We’ll be discussing the races for the 2008 Grand Prix.
All welcome to contribute. The table in the corner will be for G P
discussion, elsewhere for general banter.
We never got to discuss Valley Striders vests and logos two
weeks ago so maybe if we can get the G P sorted out quickly we can start
discussion on that too. A good idea seems to be to have “Valley Striders
Leeds” printed on the back. Alternative suggestions that have been made
are “Valley Striders Track Club” and “Valley Striders Pie and Peas Club”.
Track Session : we had approximately 28 runners for the track
session yesterday and I think everyone will agree that it went very well.
Thanks for Geoff for setting us going and to Sylvia for giving us our times on
the measured 400 metre runs. I’ve now booked the track for the second
Tuesday in the month for December, February and March. For January, I’ve
booked the 15th because we won’t be training on the 1st and I think we should
have pie and peas on the 8th.
Abbey Dash – Sunday 25 November
It seems every Valley Strider I know is running the
Dash. New members please get your Striders vests! After the race,
meet on the town hall steps just above the end of the finishing funnel.
Does anyone want to suggest somewhere to go afterwards – I’m trying to work out
what will be open 10:09 on a Sunday morning (yes, I’m hoping to break 40
minutes!!).
Entries have now closed but I may have a man’s and a woman’s
race number available. Since one or two Abbey Runners may be reading this
email, I’ll say no more, just email me.
Please read the “rules” regarding swapping of race
numbers http://valleystriders.org.uk/borrow.htm
if you intend to give your number away or run in someone
else’s number in any race.
Calderdale Way Relay – Sunday 9 December
I’m assuming Geoff has got his teams, but if you’ve not
signed up and are available as a reserve, call him on 266-6288.
Christmas Meal and Presentation Night - Friday 14 December – from Steve

The Valley Striders Christmas Party

Please let me know if you wish to
attend. Please send a cheque payable to me S.O'Callaghan to my new

Let me know if you require
vegetarian food so that I can ensure there is plenty on offer.
Hope to see you there. If not, best
wishes for the festive season and the new year ahead.

(Steve, you forgot to mention the
raffle, the highlight of the evening)
Chevin Chase – Wednesday 26 December and
Entry forms for both of these races are available from www.ukresults.net
I suspect Chevin Chase will fill in the next 7 days and
Baildon in the next 2 to 3 weeks, so I recommend you get your entries in as
soon as possible. You have been warned!
Both will be 2008 Valley Striders Grand Prix races
This is for teams of 5, each team member runs between 3 and
5 miles for a total of 20 miles all the way round. Teams must comprise at
least one woman, at least one M40 and at least one M45. If you can get a
team amongst yourselves, that would be great. Otherwise I’ll assemble teams
from those who email me. Entry fees are £2 or £2.50 per person, that’s
all! I’ll have some maps and instructions at the club over the next few
weeks. There’s also information on our website. Start at the Waterside in
Knaresborough, finish at the Yorkshire Lass, just the other side of the river,
it does great
Membership Subs
Paul White has already received subs from over 100 members,
so just under 100 to go. The website has been updated with the list of members http://valleystriders.org.uk/reg2007.htm
Paul is at the club most Tuesdays, but if you can’t get there, send a cheque
for £12, payable to Valley Striders, to Paul White,

Anniversary T-Shirts
Paul Hunter
now has the additional T-shirts that have been ordered since the AGM. He
is at the Club most Tuesdays, bring your money (short sleeve are £4.30, long
sleeve £5.50).
Result - PECO Sport Direct Cross-Country League at Woodkirk
Of our 196 registered club members, 71 are women, but only 3
turned up for the cross-country at Woodkirk, thus, having being promoted to the
First Division last year, we were 5th out of 6 teams in this first race (only 3
Horsforth runners turned up, too). If a couple of our 55-minute 10km runners
had run, we’d have been 4th and if instead a couple of our 50-minute 10km
runners had run, we’d have been 3rd . Please put 23 December in your
diaries, ladies, to help us move out of the relegation zone.
But congratulations to Caz and Carole for top 10% placings
and thanks to Lyn for good support which kept us above Horsforth.

The vets scoring requires 1 W35, 1 W45, 1 W55. Despite
having only 2 qualifiers, we finished 7th out of 14 teams
In contrast, 12 of our 125 registered men turned up and we
were clear winners in the Second Division, and in fact would have been ranked
in 4th place in the First Division. Dave Middlemas was our leading
runner, in the top 10% placings, and well done too to Mark Greaves who signed
up as a first-claim Strider 20 minutes before the race.

The vets scoring requires 3 M40, 2 M50 and 1 M60, the
starred runners counted and the vets team were ranked 5th but only 2 pts behind
Rothwell and 31 pts behind Ilkley, so we have a chance to challenge for the
vets prizes this year.
Next race at Ackworth on 23 December. Note that 2nd
claim members are eligible to run for us. I’ll publish the venue details
nearer the date.
All Striders are eligible, just turn up
and pay £2.50 on the day.
